THE GREAT COMMISSION IN

TEN PARTS Part 4

Page 2: Great Commission 4

PART FOUR:THE METHOD:

TEACHThe five accounts of the Great Commission are in: Matthew 28; Mark 16; Luke 24; John 20;

Acts 1.

Page 3: Great Commission 4

Let us ask and answer six questions about the “method” we must use

to fulfill the Great Commission.

Page 4: Great Commission 4

What does it mean to “teach”?

Make disciples; to make learners [matheeteno]

Matthew 28:19 NET Therefore go and make disciples

of all nations, baptizing

Page 5: Great Commission 4

them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy

Spirit, DISCIPLE, n. [L., to learn.]

1. A learner; a scholar; one who receives or

Page 6: Great Commission 4

professes to receive instruction from another; as the disciples of Plato. 2. A

follower; an adherent to the doctrines of another. Hence

the constant

Page 7: Great Commission 4

attendants of Christ were called his disciples; and hence all Christians are

called his disciples, as they profess to learn and receive his doctrines and precepts.

Page 8: Great Commission 4

To train; instruct [paideuo] Titus 2:12 NET

It trains us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in

the present age,

Page 9: Great Commission 4

PreachTo tell or announce thoroughly; publish abroad [diangello] Luke 9:60

NET But Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead,

but as

Page 10: Great Commission 4

for you, go and proclaim (KJV

preach) the kingdom of God."To ponder, resolve in one’s

mind; then, to converse, dispute, discourse, to reason

Page 11: Great Commission 4

with [dialegamai] Acts 20:7 NET On the first day of the week, when we met to break bread, Paul began to speak (KJV preach) to the people, and because he

intended to

Page 12: Great Commission 4

leave the next day, he extended his message until

midnight. 8 (Now there were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were meeting.) 9 A young

Page 13: Great Commission 4

man named Eutychus, who was sitting in the window,

was sinking into a deep sleep while Paul continued

to speak (KJV preaching) for a long time. Fast asleep,

Page 14: Great Commission 4

he fell down from the third story and was picked up

dead.To tell good news or tidings [euangelidzo] Acts 5:42 NET And every day both in the temple

Page 15: Great Commission 4

courts and from house to house, they did not stop

teaching and proclaiming (KJV preach) the

good news that Jesus was the Christ.

Page 16: Great Commission 4

To proclaim; literally, to report down [katangello] Colossians 1:28 NET We proclaim

him by instructing and teaching all people with all

wisdom so that we may

Page 17: Great Commission 4

present every person mature in Christ. To cry or proclaim as

a herald [keerukso] Acts 8:5 NET Philip went down to

the main city of Samaria and began

Page 18: Great Commission 4

proclaiming the Christ to them.

To talk, discourse [laleo] Acts

14:25 NET and when they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.

Page 19: Great Commission 4

What do we teach?

The gospel [good news] Romans 1:16 NET For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is God's power for

salvation to everyone who believes, to

Page 20: Great Commission 4

the Jew first and also to the Greek. The way, the truth, and the life John 14:6 NET Jesus replied, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father

Page 21: Great Commission 4

except through me. The word 2 Timothy 4:2 NET Preach the message, be ready whether

it is convenient or not, reprove, rebuke, exhort with

complete patience

Page 22: Great Commission 4

and instruction. Christ Jesus

1 Corinthians 2:2 NET For I decided to be concerned about nothing

among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

Page 23: Great Commission 4

Acts 8:35 NET So Philip started speaking, and beginning

with this scripture proclaimed the good

news about Jesus to him.

Page 24: Great Commission 4

Why this method?

There will be no visions, miraculous dreams, visits from angels, “miracles of

salvation,” or direct communication from

God.

Page 25: Great Commission 4

Sinners cannot be saved through feelings, Calvinism,

Universalism, or “testifying.”Few will study on their own –

we must teach and preach.

Page 26: Great Commission 4

Under what circumstances

should we teach?Good

circumstances.Parable of the sower. [good ground hearer] (Matthew 13; Mark

4; Luke 8)

Page 27: Great Commission 4

Pentecost (Acts 2)

The eunuch (Acts 8)

Lydia (Acts 16)

Page 28: Great Commission 4

Bad circumstancesStephen (Acts 7)

During all types of persecution 2 Timothy 3:10 NET You, however, have followed my teaching, my way of

Page 29: Great Commission 4

life, my purpose, my faith, my patience, my love, my

endurance, 11 as well as the persecutions and sufferings

that happened to me in Antioch, in Iconium, and in

Lystra.

Page 30: Great Commission 4

I endured these persecutions and the Lord delivered me

from them all. Hatred

“Shake the dust off” Acts 13:15 NET After the

Page 31: Great Commission 4

reading from the law and the prophets, the leaders of the

synagogue sent them a message, saying, "Brothers, if you have any message of

exhortation for the

Page 32: Great Commission 4

people, speak it."Luke 9:5 NET Wherever they do not receive you, as you leave that town, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against

them."

Page 33: Great Commission 4

How should we teach it?

In simplicity2 Corinthians 11:3 NET But I am

afraid that just as the serpent deceived Eve by his treachery, your minds may

be led astray from a

Page 34: Great Commission 4

sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

Ephesians 3:3 NET that by revelation the divine secret was made

known to me, as I wrote before briefly. 4 When reading

Page 35: Great Commission 4

this, you will be able to understand my insight into this

secret of Christ. 5 Now this secret was not disclosed to

people in former generations as it has now been revealed to

Page 36: Great Commission 4

his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit,

In boldness Acts 4:13 NET When they saw the boldness of

Peter and John, and discovered that they were

Page 37: Great Commission 4

uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and

recognized these men had been with Jesus.

Acts 4:31 NET When they had prayed, the place where they were

assembled

Page 38: Great Commission 4

together was shaken, and they were all filled with

the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God courageously.

Page 39: Great Commission 4

In love Ephesians 4:15 NET But practicing the truth in love, we will in

all things grow up into Christ, who is the head.

Page 40: Great Commission 4

Uncompromisingly Acts 7 Mark 10:17 NET Now as Jesus was

starting out on his way, someone ran up to him, fell on

his knees, and said, "Good teacher, what must I do to

inherit

Page 41: Great Commission 4

eternal life?" 18 Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me

good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You

know the commandments: 'Do not murder, do not

Page 42: Great Commission 4

commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false

testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and

mother.' “(Exod 20:12-16; Deut 5:16-20 ) 20 The

Page 43: Great Commission 4

man said to him, "Teacher, I have wholeheartedly

obeyed all these laws since my youth." 21 As Jesus

looked at him, he felt love for him and said,

Page 44: Great Commission 4

"You lack one thing. Go, sell whatever you have and give

the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." 22 But

at this statement, the man

Page 45: Great Commission 4

looked sad and went away sorrowful, for he was very

rich. Teach Message Accurately

2 Timothy 2:15 NET Make every effort to present yourself before God

as a proven

Page 46: Great Commission 4

worker who does not need to be ashamed, teaching the

message of truth accurately. 2 Timothy 3:16 NET Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for

Page 47: Great Commission 4

teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in

righteousness, 17 that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for

every good work.

Page 48: Great Commission 4

1 Peter 3:15 NET But set Christ apart as Lord in your hearts and always be

ready to give an answer to anyone who asks about

the hope you possess.

Page 49: Great Commission 4

How longshould we teach?

Until all hear Colossians 1:23 NET if indeed you

remain in the faith, established and firm,

without shifting from the

Page 50: Great Commission 4

hope of the gospel that you heard. This gospel has also

been preached in all creation under heaven, and

I, Paul, have become its servant.

Page 51: Great Commission 4

Matthew 28:19 NET Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

20 teaching them to obey

Page 52: Great Commission 4

everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with

you always, to the end of the age."

Page 53: Great Commission 4

Until all obey Matthew 7:13 NET "Enter through the narrow gate, because the gate is wide and the way is spacious that leads to destruction, and

there are many who

Page 54: Great Commission 4

enter through it. 14 But the gate is narrow and the way is difficult that leads to life, and there

are few who find it.

Page 55: Great Commission 4

John 3:16 NET For this is the way God loved the world: He

gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who

believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

Page 56: Great Commission 4

2 Peter 3:9 NET The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as

some regard slowness, but is being patient toward you,

because he does not wish for any to perish but for

Page 57: Great Commission 4

all to come to repentance.Until death

Revelation 2:10 NET Do not be afraid of the things you are about to suffer. The devil is about to

have some of you thrown into

Page 58: Great Commission 4

prison so you may be tested, and you will experience suffering for ten days.

Remain faithful even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown that is

life itself.

Page 59: Great Commission 4

Hebrews 9:27 NET And just as people are appointed to die once, and

then to face judgment,Until the end of time

1 Corinthians 15:24 NET Then comes the end, when he

Page 60: Great Commission 4

hands over the kingdom to God the Father, when he has

brought to an end all rule and all authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put

all his enemies under

Page 61: Great Commission 4

his feet. 26 The last enemy to be eliminated is death. 27 For he

has put everything in subjection under his feet. (Ps 8:6) But when it says "everything"

has been put in

Page 62: Great Commission 4

subjection, it is clear that this does not include the one who

put everything in subjection to him. 28 And when all things are subjected to him, then the Son

himself will be

Page 63: Great Commission 4

subjected to the one who subjected everything to him, so that God may be all in all.

1 Thessalonians 4:13 NET Now we do not want you to be uninformed,

brothers

Page 64: Great Commission 4

and sisters, about those who are asleep, so that you will not

grieve like the rest who have no hope. 14 For if we believe

that Jesus died and rose again, so also we believe

Page 65: Great Commission 4

that God will bring with him those who have fallen

asleep as Christians. 15 For we tell you this by the word

of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left

Page 66: Great Commission 4

until the coming of the Lord, will surely not go ahead of

those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will

come down from heaven with a shout of command, with

Page 67: Great Commission 4

the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of

God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we

who are alive, who are left, will be suddenly caught up

Page 68: Great Commission 4

together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in

the air. And so we will always be with the Lord. 18

Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Page 69: Great Commission 4

2 Thessalonians 1:7 NET and to you who are being afflicted to give rest together with us when the Lord Jesus is

revealed from heaven with his mighty angels. 8 With

Page 70: Great Commission 4

flaming fire he will mete out punishment on those who do

not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9

They will undergo the penalty of eternal destruction, away

from the presence of

Page 71: Great Commission 4

the Lord and from the glory of his strength, 10 when he

comes to be glorified among his saints and

admired on that day among all who away from the

Page 72: Great Commission 4

presence of the Lord and from the glory of his

strength, 10 when he comes to be glorified among his

saints and admired on that day among all who have

Page 73: Great Commission 4

believed — and you did in fact believe our testimony. 11 And in

this regard we pray for you always, that our God will make you worthy of his calling and fulfill by his power your every

desire for goodness

Page 74: Great Commission 4

and every work of faith, 12 that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the

grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Page 75: Great Commission 4

2:1 Now regarding the arrival of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to be with him,

we ask you, brothers and sisters, 2 not to be easily

shaken from your

Page 76: Great Commission 4

composure or disturbed by any kind of spirit or message or

letter allegedly from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. 3 Let no one deceive you in any way. For

that day will not arrive

Page 77: Great Commission 4

until the rebellion comes and the man of lawlessness is

revealed, the son of destruction. 4 He opposes and exalts himself above every so-

called god or object of

Page 78: Great Commission 4

worship, and as a result he takes his seat in God's temple, displaying himself as God. 5

Surely you recall that I used to tell you these things while I

was still with you.

Page 79: Great Commission 4

6 And so you know what holds him back, so that he will be

revealed in his own time. 7 For the hidden power of

lawlessness is already at work. However, the one who holds

him

Page 80: Great Commission 4

back will do so until he is taken out of the way, 8 and then the lawless one will be revealed,

whom the Lord will destroy by the breath of his mouth and

wipe out by the

Page 81: Great Commission 4

manifestation of his arrival. 9 The arrival of the lawless one

will be by Satan's working with all kinds of miracles and signs and false wonders, 10 and with

every kind of evil

Page 82: Great Commission 4

deception directed against those who are perishing, because they found no

place in their hearts for the truth so as to be saved.

Page 83: Great Commission 4

God’s chosen method for fulfilling the Great

Commission is teaching! Let us get busy learning it so that we can tell it to all of

the people in all of the world!
