Horse Sports My congratulations go to all responsible for the Horse Sports day last Friday. The whole day was a huge success, one which we as a school and a community can be immensely proud. Many people were involved in the organisation, including school staff, students and many parents, community and Pony Club members who gave much of their time to ensure the success and smooth running of the day, my sincere thanks and congratulations goes to all of you. Special acknowledgment must go to Dianne McCormack for the months of planning and preparation that underpinned the success and smooth running of the day. Well done Mendooran School and Community! OH&S Last week I instigated a complete audit of the school’s Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) policy and procedures. Consultants spent two days looking at our physical environment as well as our operational procedures to ensure the safety of our school and work environment. I am pleased to say that on the whole, the majority of all aspects of the school were very safe. The few issues that were indicated were minor and will be easily rectified. We were also given some very valuable advice on compliance record keeping of mandatory information. Principal’s Meeting Last week I attended a meeting of Principals in our local and neighbouring School Education Groups. It was very informative in terms of upcoming funding requirements and administrational and policy changes within the Department of Education. My thanks to Mrs Peter and Mrs Waters for the additional duties placed on them in my absence. NAPLAN As stated previously, Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be involved in the NAPLAN assessments to be held tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday. These assessments are very important in terms of the information that they give us regarding student progress. For this reason, it is important that all students without a medical condition attend for the three days. To assist your child, please ensure that they are well rested the night before and have had a healthy breakfast before starting the day. Canteen The Canteen will be operating from temporary premises in the Resource Room while renovations are underway, as of today. Special thanks to Bronwyn Drew and Barbara Hobbs for their efforts in moving the Canteen over the weekend. Unfortunately due to limited space there is a revised Canteen menu, please refer to the canteen news on page 7 of this newsletter.

KINDERGARTEN/YEAR 1 NEWS Last week students followed a procedure and made Chocolate Chip Cookies for Mothers Day. We went to the cooking room and Mrs Hobbs guided us through the procedure. Thank you Mrs Hobbs for all your help! This week we will continue to talk about needs and wants and the tasks that are undertaken by different family members and will be writing and following more procedures throughout the week. Kindergarten will be learning the sounds “w” and “ng” as in strong. Well done to all students who are returning their home readers each morning and thank you to my volunteer listeners. This program is really making a difference in developing the skills and knowledge of our young readers. S Reynolds

YEAR 2/3/4 NEWS We hope all mother’s had a lovely Mother’s Day and enjoyed their gift. In English we have been focusing on punctuation and writing a good sentence. The students wrote their own versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears by changing the characters, setting and storyline. In Maths we have been looking at language used in Maths problems and revising basic concepts. We thank Mr Burke for setting up the Mathletics program in the Computer room so that we can practice our Maths skills in our Computer time. L Peter

YEAR 4/5/6 NEWS We have been very fortunate over the last few weeks to have Mrs Susan Lavender spending time in our classroom with us. Mrs Lavender has been donating her time in preparation for her practicum in our room, but she is now officially part of our staff and will be in the 4/5/6 room for the next four weeks. Mrs Lavender is in her final year of study to achieve her Bachelor of General Studies/Primary Teaching through the University of New England. We are looking forward to having Mrs Lavender with us for the next four weeks. This week we will have our Year 5 students sitting for the NAPLAN tests so we will have some disruption to our normal routine. We have begun work on our HSIE unit studying the early white discovery of Australia, and we will continue with it this week. The children have already been collecting information to use for their assessment task which will be an “Historical Recount”. This is similar to the task they completed for ANZAC display; they will be required to put themselves “in the shoes” of a person that lived in that era. Eg. A sailor on the Endeavour, an Aboriginal person living in Sydney Cove, a soldier, an early business man/ woman, a female convict or free-settler, a child living in the early colony – or another

YEAR 3/4/5 NEWS Continued person, but the children need to speak to me or Mrs Lavender when they have made their choice so we don’t have everybody doing the same thing. This will be due in Week 8. G Davis Year 4/5/6 Science

To enhance the learning experiences of our students in their topic of Australian Biodiversity, and as part of National Science Week 2010, Mr Bearman has organised for Year 4/5/6 to attend an education day at Taronga Western Plains Zoo mid August. To make it even better, we are combining this day with Zoo Snooz, a sleepover at the Zoo. This will be a fantastic opportunity for our students and look forward to many students attending. Final costs will depend on our numbers. Look for a note about the excursion soon and return it promptly so we can judge numbers. B Bearman

MCS ANNUAL CROSS COUNTRY/FUN RUN Our annual Cross-Country/Fun Run will take place this Thursday 13th May. We will once again have a slightly shortened lunch break so we will be able to have everyone organised ready to begin the race. Please ensure children have adequate water and some energy-giving lunch. Everyone is welcome to come and cheer their child on and if you would be willing to man a check-point on the day please let me know. For newcomers to the school, there are several different courses run on the day – they basically all begin at the same place but vary in length according to the ages of the children. Everyone should try to do some training leading up to the race to ensure they are able to achieve well on the day. The Fun Run is again being backed by Golden Circle and is an opportunity for the children to raise funds for the school. The sponsorship forms will be coming home today, and I encourage parents to support their children in their efforts to raise sponsorship money as the school receives 80% of all money raised. To reward the children for their efforts, Golden Circle also provides a range of reward gifts based on how much each child raises. G Davis

PRIMARY SCHOOL NETBALL CHALLENGE Mrs Davis has the details of a Primary School Netball Challenge to be held in Coonamble on Wednesday, 26 May, 2010 and Cobar on 22 June, 2010. If you would like further information or to be nominated, please see Mrs Davis and she can arrange the forms for you. G Davis

READING TIPS FOR PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS Start with what interests your child. If your child is interested in horses then that is the best place to start. Visit bookshops, libraries, stables, movies … places where your child can find books, brochures, videos, software programs that are of interest. The key is providing a way to read the material. If the book is too difficult, try recording it chapter by chapter for your child to read along. Take it in turn to read one page each or for struggling readers try one sentence each. This helps your child fill in any of the meaning that may have been lost and helps with unfamiliar words. Watch out for more Reading tips next week! SECONDARY NEWS

SECONDARY NEWS GENERAL This week sees the long awaited NAPLAN examinations for Years 7 and 9. Literacy is held on Tuesday (Language Conventions and Writing) and on Wednesday (Reading). On Thursday Numeracy (With and Without Calculator) will be held. We wish our students the best of luck!! They certainly will be well prepared for the examinations. Last Wednesday our secondary boys and girls touch football teams won admiration for their valiant efforts and positive sportsmanship playing against many much older and more experienced teams at this year’s Central Schools Touch Competition in Dubbo. We would like to thank all the parents who made the effort to assist with transport and gave their time to come along and support our kids. Without your continued support such trips would prove impossible. This week we farewell Mr Andrew Burke. He has been working in our Secondary English department as a Practicum teacher. Mr Burke has shown considerable skill and a willingness to take on additional tasks and we all wish him well in the future. J Waters

YEAR 9 STUDENT LAPTOPS Thursday 29th April was our Parent Information Night for the student laptops, with the majority of parents and students attending. The presentation, given by Ben Hillsley, our Regional TSO, was very informative. More information can be obtained from the following links:

http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/news/technology/index.php http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/gotoschool/highschool/dernsw/index.php

The students have spent the last week integrating their laptops into the classrooms and have found the idea of using a laptop rather than their books very appealing. We are getting used to all the different programs and functions on the laptop, but on the whole it has been a very enjoyable experience. Genise Hollingworth (TSO)

The Competitions are held on different dates and a table follows showing when the exams will be run at Mendooran Central School. There is an administration cost involved payable to Mendooran Central School which will be forwarded onto the UNSW. If you would like your child to participate, please fill in the following entry form with your child’s name and year and send to the school office with the correct money enclosed. Prices have been kept down as much as possible and the School has passed on the savings by buying in bulk. The school crest has been included on jumpers and shirts to make our students look great in their uniforms. Please contact the school office in advance if possible if you would like to purchase uniforms. The correct money is a huge help to the office staff.
