Great design deserves great engineering

There are six main ingredients that make us the Practice we are - care, passion, intelligent engineering, original thinking, knowledge and engineering excellence.

When we started out five years ago we knew the Practice we wanted to create and that vision has never changed:

• to always care.

• to collaborate with clients on projects where we can develop ideas, challenge the conventional, identify the best design and deliver intelligent engineering.

• to work in a fun and creative environment which grows knowledge, encourages original thinking and develops a passion for engineering.

• to inspire design innovation and deliver engineering excellence.

Now we are proud that this is no longer only our vision, but is one shared by our team.

It has been an incredible journey. We have learnt from those that create, construct and deliver outstanding buildings, to ensure that we continually innovate and create engineering excellence. We believe that great design deserves great engineering.

We make sure everything matters. For us caring about our clients, our work, our people and our communities is an essential part of who we are. This is as evident in the enthusiasm we bring to the process, as it is in the success of the buildings we help design.

SKY ‘BELIEVE IN BETTER’ BUILDING

timber firsts

The ‘Believe in Better’ building is a pioneering office and training facility in West London and the UK’s tallest timber commercial building.

Designed with Arup Associates, Sky’s aspiration was for an exemplar of sustainable design, utilising off-site prefabrication to achieve an ambitious delivery programme, with minimal disruption to the surrounding campus. The use of an engineered timber solution eliminated wet trades, significantly accelerating the programme and provided a sustainable structure that achieved zero embodied C02 emissions.

We were the advanced timber engineer on the project, working with Arup Associates to complete the design and help bring the scheme to fruition.

The project has won numerous awards including:

• 2015 Wood Awards - Judges Special Award• 2015 Structural Timber Awards - Best Education; Best Commercial; Best Low Energy and the Winner of Winners• 2015 ICE London Award • 2015 Structural Award Commendation• 2014 Wood in Architecture

LABORATORY FOR SUSTAINABLE CHEMISTRY

carbon neutral

The GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry at the University of Nottingham is unique in the UK, not only in its design but also in its focus on world-leading research into sustainable chemistry.

The research activity undertaken at the Laboratory will aim for the highest ‘clean and green’ standards to minimise environmental impact and ensure that the new chemistry developed is both energy and resource efficient and sustainable.

The 4,500 m2 building, designed by architects FDG Fairhursts, also focuses on sustainability and incorporates all the latest technologies including a cross-laminated timber structure, to enable the building to be carbon neutral over its lifetime.

We are the advanced timber engineers for the project. “We have worked with Engenuiti on many projects and they have always brought a fresh dynamic approach with a hands-on attitude to solving problems. Their technical expertise is industry leading and they always impress with the quality of their delivery.” Nick Milestone, Managing Director, B&K Structures

ST. GILES CIRCUS

digging deeper

St Giles Circus, designed with Orms architects, is the major redevelopment of a key central London site adjacent to Tottenham Court Road Station. The development includes entertainment facilities, retail units, commercial space, a boutique hotel and residential accommodation. The NOW building will incorporate an emersive multi-media urban gallery, hung from two storey steel trusses cantilevered over Tottenham Court Road Station and a live music and events venue in the basement which will be built 6m above Crossrail.

We are providing structural, civil and geotechnical engineering services on the project. Significant engineering challenges have been addressed with the construction of the deep basement over the new Crossrail railway tunnel and also the construction of deep foundations next to existing London Underground tunnels. The innovative design of the foundations and basement has maximised the value brought to the client within this constrained site.

The project is currently on site.

ORIAM, NATIONAL PERFORMANCE CENTRE

super spans

Oriam, the National Performance Centre for Sport in Scotland will provide high quality sports facilities for a number of national sports bodies, including the Scottish Football Association.

Located at Heriot-Watt University the £30 million project includes a new full size indoor 3G synthetic pitch for football and rugby, a nine-court sports hall, grass and synthetic outdoor pitches as well as a high performance wing that includes areas for hydrotherapy, strength and conditioning, rehabilitation, elite changing, office accommodation and a classroom. The facility will allow for grass-roots development through to high performance training.

Designed with Reiach and Hall, a key feature of the building is the centre’s roof, which comprises long span steel arches, clad in tensioned PVC and was inspired by the angle and trajectory of Roberto Carlos’ goal against France in 1997. We worked collaboratively with Reiach and Hall to realise the ambitious design, providing structural, civil and geotechnical engineering services.

“We have been working with Engenuiti on Oriam since December 2012. They have brought an unusually high level of engineering imagination and competence to the project combined with a consistently proactive approach to design problems. They have an open and collaborative manner and we thoroughly enjoy working with them.” James Grimley, Director Reiach & Hall Architects

THE CUBE

tall timber

The Cube is a unique 10 storey residential development that pushes the boundaries of hybrid buildings and timber engineering through its innovative twisted design, complex geometry and concrete, steel and timber construction.

Architect’s Hawkins\Brown took a basic cruciform shape and twisted every second floor providing all the flats with dual or triple aspect views of the city and generous terraces. The complex geometry of the building did not lend itself to being built purely in cross-laminated timber (CLT), but rather to a hybrid CLT and steel structure.

The project has won numerous awards including:

• 2015 Structural Timber Awards ‘Engineer of the Year’ • 2015 Offsite Awards for Best Hybrid Construction and Winner or Winners• 2015 Celebrating Construction Award for Innovation• 2015 Evening Standard New Homes Award• 2013 International Property Award in the Mixed Use Architecture category.

‘It was refreshing to work with an engineering company that is as energetic and creative as Engenuiti. They approached a highly complex and challenging build project with enthusiasm and the utmost attention to detail, helping us to achieve our vision of creating Europe’s tallest CLT tower - The Cube Building.

We are delighted to have forged a very successful working relationship with Engenuiti’ Simon De Friend, CEO Regal Homes

NATIONAL AUTOMOBILE INNOVATION CENTRE

in the detail

The National Automotive Innovation Centre is a place for researchers, engineers and designers to work together to create new technologies and products that showcase advances in British design and engineering.

Designed by Cullinan Studios, the building has two distinct but overlapping parts: an inner sanctum and a shop window. There are flexible research spaces over four storeys surrounded by atrium space where people can come together for demonstrations, meetings, break-out sessions or simply to socialise. The building steps in and out to create a clear entrance and at roof level to form terraces. The engineered timber roof is dramatic and provides a unifying feature to the elevations.

We provided the advanced timber engineering for the project, working closely with the architect and design team to ensure the successful design of the roof structure.

KEYNSHAM CIVIC CENTRE

hybrid systems

Designed with AHR, the Civic Centre comprises of a new Council office, library, One-Stop-Shop; retail space, two new pedestrian streets, a market square and a new car park. The office spaces have been designed with an interspersed series of atria and break-out zones, creating a light, airy and high quality working environment.

The building structures are highly original in their use of hybrid materials - steel framing and CLT walls and floors that are made up of alternating CLT panels and precast concrete planks. This sustainable form of construction combines the low carbon effectiveness of CLT with the high thermal mass of the exposed concrete. The structural solution enables the maximum use of prefabrication, allowing construction time on site to be minimised, but requiring attentive detailing particularly at the interfaces between different materials.

The Centre has won a number of awards including the 2015 BCO Corporate Workplace and Winner of Winners awards and the RIBA South West Sustainability Award.
