Welcome back to Term 2 which will be a different experience for us all. Firstly, can I thank you
for the support you have given your children and our staff over the last few weeks of Term 1 and
the first two weeks of this term. May I also take this opportunity to thank and congratulate staff,
teaching and non-teaching, for the manner they have delivered support to our students and
families and also to each other during these challenging times.
As we have had a phased return to school please be assured the College is following the NSW
Health and Department of Education protocols in regards to social distancing, personal hygiene,
cleaning of classrooms and sanitisation strategies.
Communication is pivotal for students and parents and each campus has been regularly
informing our local community of any updates we receive from authorities. I encourage you to
regularly check Campus Facebook and Website pages for current information.
We need to work together through this time and please contact your child’s campus if you need
further support.

Welcome Back!
This week we welcome back students to the Senior Campus as we phase in a full return to
face to face teaching. It has been amazing to see how quickly our school community took
up the challenge and responded to learning and teaching from home. I congratulate
everyone for adapting at such short notice, some of the outcomes have been extremely
positive. However, the Senior Campus is a whole lot more vibrant this week with students.

During isolation, Music students have been able to be creative by using online music
applications. One optional activity offered to students was on “Star Wars Day” - Monday 4th
May. Students were able to put their arranging/composing skills to the test by creating the
main Star Wars theme using the Chrome Music Lab. Here are some links that students sent in

Professional Teachers Who Engage and Inspire
Learning from Home in Food Technology and Textiles Technology. Students in Technology Mandatory and Elective subjects for Food Technology and Textiles Technology have been engaging in a variety of activities. Year 7 Technology Mandatory students have designed and made their own self watering planters and grown food using vegetable scraps, see Sophia Lynch's design in the photos. Mrs Thomson and Miss Doust also tried this at school to show examples to the students, however; we forgot about our food over the holidays and it unfortunately died. The teachers have been busy filming cooking demonstrations and uploading these to Google Classroom. Recipes so far have included smoothie bowls, butterfly cakes with lime curd, cream of carrot soup, home-made yoghurt and granola, lemon butter, brownies and pickled ginger. Some students have even been cooking at home and have sent through photos of their creations, see Bella Burgess and her amazing home-made scones in the photos. Year 8 Technology Mandatory Textiles students were sent home packages to design and make their own toy monster and have now started making a decorated bag with the materials they were supplied with in their work packages. Year 9 and 10 Textiles classes had the option of making a small macramé wall hanging, Lara Thompson took this to the next level and made an amazing masterpiece. Year 10 Textiles are currently researching the historical perspectives of textiles and how events in history change fashion. With our current circumstances, these students are documenting their fashion during isolation in a diary or video, stay tuned for some interesting and creative outfits to come! Maths - Forster Campus
In Maths, all students have been included in their class’ Google Classroom, where work has
been assigned each timetabled Maths lesson. Booklets have also been created and posted
home for students to complete instead of or in addition to the online learning. As always, the
Maths staff are happy to assist students who are experiencing difficulty or who would like
extra help via email or phone. We are all looking forward to seeing our students back in the
classroom over the coming weeks.

It was a bumper crop this year, and although we sold bunches to staff our sales were down as
we didn’t have any students to sell to. We had a surplus of flowers and decided to donate a
boot full of bunches to Golden Ponds, for distribution to their residents. We had some
wonderful helpers including Dyarna, Lilly, Angela from year 9, Halli from year 7 and my two
daughters - Sophie and Jade - Sunrae Baillie

Ongoing Careers Support
These past few weeks have been challenging for us all and unfortunately there have been a few events that have been postponed or cancelled. But don’t worry! We are working hard to rearrange as many things as possible so that students do not miss out altogether. For example, the Forster Campus Elevate Education session that was planned for Term 2 has been rearranged for later in the year and the Charles Sturt University Future Moves presentation will be offered online or taught by our careers advisers when students return to school. Other organisations have also been looking at online alter-natives to their programs and we have been making students aware of the various online/virtual ca-reers expos and information sessions that they have access to.
Subject Selections
This term is when students in Year 10 make their decisions on what subjects they are going to be studying in Year 11 and 12. The plan is to still have students hand in their subject selection sheet in Week 10 of this term and even during these difficult times, your careers advisers are here to help and support you through every step of the way. If students are still not able to come to school, they are to keep a check on their Careers Google Classrooms for updated information and resources. In addition to face to face interviews that are available to students, the Careers Advisers at our Forster and Tun-curry Campuses are offering Zoom interviews to students and we are also available to be contacted via phone, Google classroom and the parent portal. Please get in touch if you need help. We are here for you!
Careers Website Did you know that our College has an amazing Careers website for each campus to provide you with all of the latest information that will help you make decisions about your student’s future career and life beyond school? You can use this site to locate University, TAFE and any other types of courses across Australia, get information about the HSC, search for job vacancies and much more. There is even a fantastic section to create resumes, cover letters and e portfolios. This is a fabulous resource for all students from Year 7 - 12. Please log into the website for your particular campus to access this information. If you are at Tuncurry Campus or Forster Campus, all of your information will be transferred to the Senior Campus website when you begin Year 11!

Senior Campus Update
The Senior Campus Careers Advisers have set up a closed Facebook page specifically for Year 12 stu-dents and parents so we can share pertinent information with our Year 12 families. Please look for ‘GLCSC Year 12 2020’ on Facebook and request to join so you can stay up to date with all the careers information relevant to our current Year 12 students. Year 12 students also have access to a google classroom “Year 12 2020” which is another avenue we are sharing careers information with our stu-dents.
Year 11 students and families are welcome to join our Facebook page “Great Lakes College Senior Campus Careers” for information relevant to them.
Throughout these uncertain times, we are still here to help all of our students with their planning for their post school options. This term, we are interviewing all of Year 12 to help them with the next step in their journey. We invite you to take part in the 2020 Anzac Day Schools’ Awards. First prize is $5000 for your
School; State and Territory winners receive $3000 each, with other prizes available as well.
The theme of the 2020 Awards is The Second World War.
The Awards this year align with the 75th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War on
15 August. Entries for this year’s Awards will need to focus on the Second World War and the
effect on local Australian communities at the time.
The closing date of the Awards is Friday, 11 September 2020.

Canteen Operations
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
On Monday 11th May the P&C operated canteens at Forster and Tuncurry
Campuses and the Senior cafeteria will reopen five days a week. These spaces will
be following the NSW Health and Department of Education guidelines in regards to
cleaning, social distancing, personal hygiene, student numbers in small areas and
hand sanitisation.
To assist the canteen staff with food preparation it is preferable that students
place lunch orders when they arrive at the school each morning. Also the
canteen would like to minimise the exchange of cash as much as possible so card
payment is the preferred option but do understand that some students do not
have access to card payments.
We very much appreciate the P&C support through the phased return of students
to Great Lakes College.
Once restrictions regarding volunteers on campus have been lifted, canteens at
Forster and Tuncurry Campus will require volunteer help, please keep your eye on
facebook for a date to be advised.
Next P&C Meeting - TBA
The P&C's only source of funds to support college activities is
the profits generated by the canteens. Volunteers working in the
canteen are critical in helping the P&C generating these profits
and any help from the parent body is greatly appreciated.
