Great Society

Mr. Williams10th Grade U.S. History

•What were the main goals of the New Frontier?•Who are the four main groups

that people think may have been in on a conspiracy to kill JFK?•What were the official findings

of the Warren Commission?

“I constantly had before me the picture that Kennedy had selected me….It was my duty to carry on and this meant his people as well as his programs. They were part of his legacy.”

“Let us here highly resolve that John Fitzgerald Kennedy did not live—or die—in vain.”

• “They [the poor] exist within the most powerful and rich society the world has ever known. Their misery has continued while the nation talked of itself of being ‘affluent’ [wealthy]…In this way tens of millions of human beings became invisible. They dropped out of sight, and out of mind…how long shall we ignore this underdeveloped nation in our midst?”-The Other America 1962

War on Poverty• Economic Opportunity Act• Job Corps: offered work training

programs for unemployed youths• VISTA: domestic version of the

Peace Corps that provided help to poor communities in the U.S.

• “No memorial…could more eloquently honor President Kennedy’s memory than the earliest possible passage of the civil rights bill for which he fought so long. “We have talked long enough in this country about equal rights…it is time now to…write it in the books of law.”

Great Society• Education, war on poverty, civil

rights, environment, etc.•Medicare: health program for

people over the age of 65•Medicaid: program that provides

free health care for the poor

Election of 1964• LBJ vs. Barry Goldwater• “Goldwater…defined the conservative

agenda as limited, constitutional government, lower taxes, a superior national defense, individual freedom and responsibility. He plotted the route to get there by reducing the size of government, promoting freedom not welfare, and repealing laws, not passing new ones.”
