GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY

Some Delaware County farms allow you to get your hands dirty. Pick your own berries, pumpkins, eggs and Christmas trees or join in during the morning chores at these family farms.At CATSKILL FRESH (96 Laurel Bank Ave., Deposit, 607-467-5762, catskillfresh.com), Lonny and Liz Schaefer raise beef and grow produce at this fourth-generation farm, where you can harvest your own strawberries in the spring and pumpkins in the fall. BLUE SKY FARM & WINERY (779 Charcoal Rd., Stamford, 607-652-4712, blueskyfarmwinery.com) offers five acres

of “U-Pick” blueberry fields. Pick up a bottle of blueberry wine while you’re there. WINDY KNOB BLUEBERRY FARM (6517 Turnpike Rd., Meredith, 607-746-2991) has been welcoming blueberry pickers for 40 years. Blueberry season is typically from mid-July through mid-August. GREENANE FARMS (196 County Rd. 10, Meridale, 607-746-8878, greenanefarms.com) grows strawberries, raspberries and blackberries in its berry orchard, which is open Monday through Saturday during the summer harvest season. has become famous for its eggs, which are sold in supermarkets across the country. Owners Bryan and Betsy Babcock offer you a chance to gather eggs from right underneath the chickens. DONNELLY FARM STAND (5709 E. River Rd., Walton, 607-865-5036) is a favorite autumn stop for pumpkins. Pick your own pumpkin or gourd from an array of familiar and exotic varieties in the fall. One of the best local harvests happens in the dead of winter. ”Pick your own” Christmas tree (with a little help) at

ROBSON’S CHRISTMAS TREES (2425 Jim Lane Rd., Bovina Center, 607-832-4306), which is open Fridays through Sundays between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The farm lets visitors select a tree up to 10 feet tall in one of several varieties. Or head to HAWLEY FAMILY TREE FARM (4528 Peakes Brook Rd., Delhi, 607-746-3543), where hot cocoa, Christmas cookies and a snug woodstove await visitors who get cold while tromping the fields in search of the perfect tree.

Delaware County Fair: The Highlight of SummerNow celebrating its 130th year, the DELAWARE COUNTY FAIR (Fair St., Walton, 13856. Aug. 15 to Aug. 20. delawarecountyfair.org) is a six-day celebration of rural life that draws tens of thousands of people to the town of Walton each year. Local farmers show off their best cows, horses, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, chickens, vegetables and more. Equestrians put horses through their paces in riding competitions, while small garden tractors and giant professional rigs compete in tractor pulls. There’s an entire barn filled with antique tractors and engines. Kids can pet a calf, practice milking a cow and watch a sculptor carve butter into a life-size work of art. Nighttime at the fair brings entertainment to the grandstand. Local auto buffs spend all year building derby cars that smash into each other during two popular demolition derbies. Crowds pack the motorcycle thrill show, try the rides and games on the midway and sample a kaleidoscopic array of food, much of it served on a stick.

Food In the early spring, farmers tap maple trees for sap, which they boil down to make syrup. Many maple syrup producers hold open houses in late March and early April as part of New York’s “Maple Weekend” (mapleweekend.com). One of Delaware County’s largest producers, SHAVER-HILL MAPLE (310 Rd., Harpersfield, 607-652-6792, shaverhillfarm.com) offers tours of the saphouse along with horse-drawn wagon rides and a pancake breakfast. Other must-see saphouses are ROXBURY MOUNTAIN MAPLE (750 Roxbury Mountain Rd., Hobart, 607-538-1500, roxburymountainmaple.com), with 20,000 taps and 200 miles of tubing, and CATSKILL MOUNTAIN MAPLE (65 Charlie Wood Rd., Delancey, 607-746-6215, catskillmountainmaple.com). Many maple syrupmakers are keepers of a rich heritage. At MAPLEWOOD FARM

FARMSTAYSBed & breakfasts meet agritourism! Spend the night at a local farm, and eat food made from ingredients that were raised right outside. LA BASSE COUR (3228 Gunhouse Hill Rd., South Kortright, 607-538-9707, la-basse-cour.com) has comfy rooms in the farmhouse and delicious homemade breakfasts. Goats, chickens, cows, dogs and farm cats might accompany you on your strolls around the farm—and if you need to stay connected, wireless internet is available. There’s a farm store on the premises, and you can fish nearby. STONE & THISTLE FARM (1211 Kelso Rd., East Meredith, 607-278-5800, stoneandthistlefarm.com) has overnight accommodations for guests who want to try being a “farmer for a day” by doing morning chores, collecting eggs, feeding rabbits, moving sheep with the farm’s border collies and planting and harvesting the kitchen gardens. Then eat the fruit of your labors during a farm-to-table meal at Fable, the farm’s own restaurant. LUCKY DOG ORGANIC FARM (35796 Route 10, Hamden, 607-746-8383, luckydogorganic.com), one of Delaware County’s largest working farms, can put you up in the historic Hamden Inn, which its owners also operate. Wake up and walk across the street to visit the farm, which raises produce that is delivered to farmers’ markets in New York City every week. Healthy vegetarian, vegan and raw foods are on the menu at the TURQUOISE BARN (8052 County Rd. 18, Bloomville, 607-538-1235, turquoisebarn.com), where you can stay in an 1800-era carriage house and wake up to a breakfast of eggs from the farm’s chickens.


STATE OF THE UNION

Brewing and distilling are staging a comeback in Delaware County with hard apple cider, a vodka made with local apples and a nationally renowned absinthe.UNION GROVE DISTILLERY (43311 Route 28, Arkville, 845-586-6300, uniongrovedistillery.com) celebrated its grand opening in February 2016. Named for a town that is now covered by the waters of the nearby Pepacton Reservoir, which supplies New York City’s

drinking water, Union Grove’s product is Vly Creek vodka, made with wheat and locally grown apples pressed in an antique cider press at the nearby Hubbell Family Farm. Owners Todd Pascarella and Brian Mulder have long-term plans to make bourbon and whiskey. The cocktail lounge and tasting room at the front of the distillery features a crackling wood fire, a copper-topped bar and, for fans of craft spirits who have children in tow, a kids’ playroom. has earned international acclaim for her line of handcrafted traditional absinthes. Using old-school methods and wormwood that is grown for her by local farmers, Lins was the first distiller in New York state to make the formerly outlawed spirit. Lins has recently added a line of whiskeys to her repertoire, and does all the work of grinding grain, fermenting mash, distilling, bottling and delivering her products herself. AWESTRUCK PREMIUM HARD CIDER comes in three flavors: Eastern dry, Hibiscus Ginger and Lavender Hops. Founders Patti Wilcox and Casey Vitti built

their company, GRAVITY CIDERS (8 Winkler Rd., Sidney, gravityciders.com), to create local jobs, and it’s doing just that: In 2016, Gravity Ciders outgrew its home in Walton and moved to a larger facility in Sidney, after just a year in business. WAYSIDE CIDER (waysidecider.com), which makes some of its small batches of cider from foraged “feral” apples, will be opening a cidery and tasting room in Andes in 2016. A microbrewery called WEAVER HOLLOW FARMHOUSE ALES (weaverhollow.com) is also aiming to open a facility in Andes, in 2017.

There are odd and amazing things to see and do all over Delaware County—if you know where to look. Find your way to vintage bowling alleys, off-the-beaten-path museums, eclectic businesses and the largest “book village” east of the Mississippi.See vintage machinery in action at the HANFORD MILLS MUSEUM (51 County Rd. 12, East Meredith, 607-278-5744, hanfordmills.org), which features an authentic water- and steam-powered sawmill,grist mill and woodworking shop. USA SHAOLIN TEMPLE (383 Breezy Hill Rd., Fleischmanns, 212-358-7876, usashaolintemple.org) is the upstate home of Chan Buddhists under the tutelage of 34th-generation “warrior monk” Shi Yan Ming that offer public classes and a kids’ summer camp in kung fu and other martial arts. At DELAWARE DELICACIES SMOKE HOUSE (420 Rhodes Rd., Hancock, 607-637-4443), Ray Turner catches eels in a handbuilt stone weir on the East Branch of the Delaware River and smokes them to perfection. Every September, Downsville hosts

the NORTHEAST ELECTRIC AIRCRAFT TECHNOLOGY FAIR (Sept. 15, 16, 17 and 18, neatfair.org), the nation’s largest gathering of model electric aircraft enthusiasts. THE ROXBURY (2258 County Rd. 41, Roxbury, 607-326-7200, theroxburymotel.com) is a boutique hotel on a mission: to be as outrageously, luxuriously campy as possible. Owners Greg Henderson and Joseph Massa create spaces like a “Charlie’s Angels”-inspired suite, a “Wizard of Oz” room with its very own yellow brick road and “The Digs,” an homage to Indiana Jones complete with a bed overhung with whips and a fish tank in the shower. John Burroughs, the beloved 19th-century nature writer who hobnobbed with Henry Ford and Thomas Edison, grew up in the Catskills community of Roxbury. WOODCHUCK LODGE (1633 Burroughs Memorial Rd., Roxbury, woodchucklodge.org), Burroughs’ summer retreat, was built on his family’s ancestral land and is now a museum dedicated to his legacy. The humble cabin hosts lectures and tours. FRANKLIN RAILROAD AND COMMUNITY MUSEUM (574 Main St., Franklin, 607-829-2692) celebrates the legacy of Walter Rich, a local railway executive, and is built around “The Warwick,” an 1889 railroad car that Rich purchased and carefully restored to its former glory.

The eight-sided brick OCTAGON HOUSE, a former bed and breakfast that is now shuttered and rumored to be haunted, is a remnant of a mid-19th-century fad for building octagon houses across the nation. operated by the Western Catskills Community Revitalization Council (76 Main St., Stamford, 607-652-2072, westerncatskills.org) is a restorer’s fantasy of salvaged building materials, kitchen and bathroom fixtures, architectural details and appliances. In 2015, it held a “Game of Thrones” toilet sales festival with potty-themed games. The 1797 Frisbee House is home to the DELAWARE COUNTY HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION (46549 Route 10, Delhi, 607-746-3849, dcha-ny.org), a blacksmith shop, one-room school house, 19th-century gun shop and a turnpike tollgate. The village of Hobart has established itself as the only “book village” in the U.S. east of the Mississippi. Home to six bookstores, each with its own specialty, the HOBART BOOK VILLAGE (Hobart, hobartbookvillage.com) is catnip for bibliophiles, hosting regular townwide book sales, lecture series and writers’ conferences. Amy Sokol paints psychedelic designs on vintage furniture at FUNK A’ TURE (19 Elm St., Delhi, 607-422-4580), and her magpie-bright creations are a hit with locals and tourists alike.

The hundred-year-old Odd Fellows hall in Hancock was once the Hancock Opera House, a hardware store, a dance hall and a dinner theater. Now the building is the TWO SISTERS EMPORIUM (170 E. Front St, Hancock, 607-821-1606), a bakery, a gift shop featuring local artists and, coming soon, a bistro. MARGARETVILLE BOWL (42366 Route 28, Margaretville, 845-586-2695) is an eight-lane bowling alley that opened in 1960. Half a century later, the pink-and-chrome vintage ball returns, mechanical pinsetters and lockers are still immaculate.

GET LOST IN THE MOUNTAINS

Enjoy Delaware County’s farmscapes and wild lands, serene sunsets and open waters while working up a sweat or just lazing around. On foot, by bicycle, or paddling, there’s no shortage of options to explore. The CATSKILL PARK has 700,000 acres of forest preserve and wilderness. Last year, the new MAURICE D. HINCHEY CATSKILL INTERPRETIVE CENTER (Route 28, Mount Tremper, catskillinterpretivecenter.org) opened to help visitors find their way. TAKE A HIKE Take the 13.6-mile DRY BROOK RIDGE TRAIL up Pakatakan Mountain. (From Route 28 in Margaretville, go southeast on Fair St. and then left on Southside Spur. The trailhead is .1 mile on the right.) In Delhi, a new set of trails are named after characters in the beloved

children’s novel “My Side of the Mountain,” which is set in this Catskills town. (Park at Delaware Academy, 2 Sheldon Dr., Delhi, or at the Lutheran Church, 565 Route 28.) HEADWATERS TRAILS offers almost 30 miles of trails with parking right outside the village. (Park .9 miles north of the village on Route 10, Stamford, headwaterstrailsny.org.) The BOUCHOUXVILLE TRAIL AND JENSEN’S LEDGES offer amazing views in an easy 2.5-mile hike. (Take Route 97 to Lordville Rd. to Bouchoux Rd. in Lordville.Trailhead is three miles down Bouchoux Rd. at dead end.) FIND A WATERFALL There are small cascades on almost every creek and kill in Delaware County. RUSSELL BROOK FALLS is 23-foot cascade in the middle of the Delaware Wild Forest. More launch sites are in the works for the town of Delhi and Hamden. Take your skiff out on EAST SIDNEY LAKE PARK (4659 Route 357, Franklin, 607-829-6433, eastsidneydam.com), LAUNT POND AT BEAR SPRING MOUNTAIN (512 E. Trout Brook Rd., Downsville), BIG POND (Barkaboom Rd., Andes) or LITTLE POND (549 Little Pond State Campground Rd., Andes, dec.ny.gov/outdoor/24478.html). In Sidney, the ANNUAL EDWARD N. WESSELS CANOE REGATTA (sidneychamber.org) takes place on May 21. BIKE Back roads are perfect for road biking. Rolling hills, minimal traffic and maximum scenery make for a number of excellent “leg day” options. Create a loop on

the back roads of Roxbury, Hobart (be sure to check out Narrow Notch Rd. and Red Rock Rd.) or Meredith. The CATSKILL SCENIC TRAIL (park on Route 10 in Bloomville, catskillscenictrail.org) is perfect for beginning mountain bikers. For more advanced riding, try the miles of

trails that range from beginner to expert at PLATTEKILL MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK (469 Plattekill Mountain Rd., Roxbury, plattekill.com), a ski area that turns into a mountain bike park in the summer. Or head to the multi-use trails at BEAR SPRING WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA (park on Route 206, three miles southeast of Walton, dec.ny.gov/outdoor/85857.html). SWIM Remote lakes and swimming beaches dot the county. EAST SIDNEY LAKE PARK (4659 Route 357, Franklin, 13775, 607-829-6433 eastsidneydam.com) allows camping, fishing and boating near its swimming beach. LAUNT POND AT BEAR SPRING MOUNTAIN (512 East Trout Brook Rd., Downsville) offers swimming and boating from a beach, as well as fishing and hiking. In Andes, BIG POND (Barkaboom Rd., Andes) and nearby LITTLE POND (549 Little Pond State Campground Rd., Andes, dec.ny.gov/outdoor/24478.html) both allow swimming and boating. BIRDWATCHING The WEST BRANCH PRESERVE (Route 10, one mile south of Hamden) or HARTWICK COLLEGE’S PINE LAKE ENVIRONMENTAL CAMPUS (1894 Charlotte Creek Rd., Oneonta, hartwick.edu) offer excellent birding opportunities. FRANKLIN MOUNTAIN (52 Grange Hall Rd. Spur, Oneonta) is the place to see hawks on their annual migrations. And keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles everywhere you go. HORSEBACK RIDING For English-style riding, try GREY GOOSE FARM (83 Maggie Hoag Rd., Delancey, 607-746-3645). For Western lessons, check out BROKEN SPOKE (874 Narrow Notch Rd., Hobart, 607-538-9651, brokenspokestables.com) or COUNTRY MEADOWS (1027 Route 22, Walton, 607-865-8071). ATV RENTALS STONE TAVERN FARM (2080 Upper Meeker Hollow Rd., Roxbury, stonetavernfarm.com) offers ATV rentals for riding almost year-round on its 400 acres. FIRE TOWERS Drive to the summit of MOUNT UTSAYANTHA, climb the tower and check out the hang-gliding ramp (Tower Rd., Stamford), or hike seven miles round trip through a bluestone quarry to the ROCK RIFT FIRE TOWER (park at the intersection of Route 10 and County Rd. 268 on the Cannonsville Reservoir, Tompkins). Winter Outdoors: Ice, Ice BabyWinter is no time to stay inside. From easy snowshoe strolls to adrenaline-laced downhill ski runs, Delaware County has got you covered. ICE HARVEST Get your ice the old-fashioned way: using historic tools at the HANFORD MILLS MUSEUM (Feb. 4, 2017, 51 County Rd. 12, East Meredith, 607-278-5744, hanfordmills.org). SKIING PLATTEKILL MOUNTAIN (469 Plattekill Mountain Rd., Roxbury, 607-326-3500, plattekill.com) is known for having some highly sought-after expert runs. There’s snow tubing, too. CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING The CATSKILL SCENIC TRAIL (Route 10, Bloomville, catskillscenictrail.org) offers 26 miles of level grades and scenic vistas. The two-mile ANDES RAIL TRAIL (Route 2, Andes, andesworks.com) is a great place for beginner cross-country skiers. The COLLEGE GOLF COURSE AT SUNY DELHI (85 Scotch Mountain Rd., Delhi, 607-746-4653, golfcourse.delhi.edu) offers rolling terrain for exploring on skis or snowshoes. SNOWSHOEING The 11-plus-mile HUCKLEBERRY LOOP (Hill Rd., Margaretville) boasts dramatic pine forests and gorgeous views. PALMER HILL (Finkle Rd., Andes), with its open sky views,

is another favorite. SNOWMOBILING Over 300 miles of snowmobile trails are yours for the riding, thanks to the DELAWARE VALLEY RIDGE RIDERS (delawarevalleyridgeriders.com).ICE SKATING There are outdoor public ice rinks in DOWNSVILLE (Route 206, 607-363-7169), DELHI (Sheldon Dr., 607-746-8696) and STAMFORD (South St., 607-643-3629).
