GREAT ECONOMIC INDICATORS

Jason Hutcheson, President & CEO Greater Burlington Partnership

Today’s economy feels different than it has in some time. Although Greater Burlington has ranked high (in the top 10% two years in a row!) for economic activity as compared to other peer communities, there can often be a lag between good news and the economic statistics that follow it. Employment statistics typically lag by 3-4 weeks. Consumer spending can lag six months or more. Tourism impact lags 10-11 months.

The most recent data sets are telling a pretty good story. Actually, they are fantastic and should be celebrated.

Consider the following:

• April’s Des Moines County unemployment rate stands at 4.7% - the lowest since October of 2007.

• The number of jobs in Des Moines County reached 20,250 in April – the highest April on record since 2002.

• Retail sales for the most recent recordable quarter were up 2.7% - a very strong number given historical trends.

• Overall hotel occupancy is up 31% year to date over 2013.

In addition, Iowa State University recently analyzed data from the Census Bureau estimating population growth for 953 Iowa cities from 2010 – 2013. Only 25% of Iowa communities grew during that time period, but for the first time in more than a generation, all five municipalities in our county grew in population. Burlington, West Burlington, Middletown, Danville and Mediapolis- they all added more residents. When was the last time that happened?

We need a few more months of strong data to prove a trend, but these stats are not anomalies. The numbers have been getting better for some time.

Without question, the Iowa Fertilizer Company is having a positive impact on the Greater Burlington area and the entire region. To what degree is this activity impacting our overall economic indicators? It is difficult to say for sure. We know the upward trend began before construction, but the boost in confidence has continued to propel the momentum forward at an accelerated rate.

The number of leads and prospects for existing company expansions and for new business attraction projects during the first six months of the year has outpaced any other 12 month period since the recession. The current project pipeline contains in excess of $100 million in private capital investment and hundreds of new jobs. While there is no guarantee that even a single project will move forward, this level of activity is the highest in my tenure with the Partnership.

Things are going well; the pie is definitely growing. Go get your share!

ON THE COVERGROWING A SUCCESSFUL FARMERS MARKET Going back to the 1990s, Downtown Partners has organized a weekly farmers market, with an emphasis on fresh, quality local foods and crafts. The vendor mix has changed over the years, but some have been with us since the beginning. The community’s enthusiasm has made the Riverfront Farmers Market the most successful in the region.

Many Main Street organizations operate farmers markets, and it’s easy to see why. They are a draw for both residents and tourists, helping to support the burgeoning interest in local foods. In a very real way, farmers markets are microcosms of downtown; they require organization, promotion, an attractive setting, and a competitive business mix. Several downtown Burlington businesses, including Original Cyns, Tim’s Wood Products, and Gypsi, got exposure early on at the Riverfront Farmers Market.

The Riverfront Farmers Market is run by a steering committee, with a market manager overseeing the operations, and is supported by Great Western Bank. The generous support of an exclusive sponsor enables Downtown Partners to grow the market with enhanced advertising, entertainment and children’s activities.

AUGUST 28, 12:30 pm BURLINGTON GOLF CLUB

START PLANNING YOUR 2015 MARKETING BUDGETYour company’s marketing plan encompasses a wide variety of options, and many members of the Chamber of Commerce choose to support the events, programs and print advertising offered by the Chamber of Commerce and their partners, Economic Development, Convention and Visitors Bureau and Downtown Partners.

The Partnership will begin securing commitments for these sponsorships and advertisements in August. Members who participated in last year’s program will get “right of first refusal” (aka first dibs) on all of their contracts as well as access to the brand new 2015 menu of offerings! Giving 2014 participants the opportunity to shop first is our way of thanking them for their past support.

Members who are new to the Chamber of Commerce, or who would like to begin their Partnership marketing strategy for the first time, may do so as well.

How does this help the members and the Partnership? Securing commitments for the sponsorships and advertising options is one tool

that members can use in “Making Connections, Building Community” as our tagline states. The menu allows members to understand all the sponsorship and marketing opportunities available through the Partnership. It also helps the Partnership set goals and plan for 2015.

What happens next? Volunteers and team members will be available to help you review the 2015 menu of events, programs, marketing and advertising opportunities. They will assist you in allocating your time, participation, and investment dollars so that you can maximize membership benefits.

The Partnership encourages you to start thinking about your 2015 marketing plan. The sooner you can make your marketing choices, the better the selection will be, as some events, publications and programs will sell out. If you would like to be contacted immediately when the campaign opens, contact Kay Sackville Breuer, Vice President, at [email protected] or 319-208-0041.

The Greater Burlington Partnership invites Chamber of Commerce members to enjoy a day on the golf course at the 15th Annual Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic. The golf course has long been seen as the place where deals are made and contracts are secured.

Play for the day will be a four-person, best-shot tournament and will begin at 12:30 pm with a shotgun start on August 28. Join the fun a little early to take advantage of the driving range and grab a bite to eat from the grill at Burlington Golf Club. For additional information or to sign up, contact Kay Sackville Breuer, Vice President, at [email protected] or 319-208-0041.

INVENT AN EVENT WINNERS SELECTEDThe Greater Burlington community will be welcoming two new events to the area in the near future. The Greater Burlington Convention & Visitors Bureau recently awarded Invent an Event funding to two organizations who will be hosting new events between October, 2014 and March, 2015. Invent an Event is a new initiative that the Convention & Visitors Bureau Steering Committee launched this year. The Steering Committee was able to direct a number of funding requests to a Sports Authority Grant that the community received. The purpose of the promotion is to provide seed money to get a new event created within the community during slower times of the year.

The two new events include a Disc Golf Tournament being coordinated by the Burlington Disc Golf Club. This tournament will consist of either a college qualifying event or an A-Tier event that will be open to any disc golf participant despite their age or skill level. An official date for this event will be announced soon.

The second event is Fan Zero Expo. Fan Zero Expo is a multi-day event which will unite fan culture surrounding television, movies, books, comics, and more in a centralized location. Attendees will be invited from many regional and national associations including ICON, Demicon, Anime Iowa, ACEN, LeakyCon, Dragon’Con, C2E2, Reactor, Nerdtacular, Planet Comicon. This event will take place March 20-22, 2015 in Downtown Burlington.

The Partnership looks forward to these events developing and growing.

WELCOME CENTER OFFERS BIKE RENTALSThe Greater Burlington Convention & Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce a new partnership with Nick’s Cycling and Fitness. SOCIAL ASSISTANCE SLOWLY RECEDES Last May, the Greater Burlington Partnership released the Social Assistance Report that stated the facts, statistics and testimonials of officials within social assistance programs in Des Moines County. This information was then discussed with our elected officials at all levels of government. As it continues to be an issue that members want addressed, The Partnership will continue to share information.

After one year, there have been some changes. The dollars allocated throughout three of the largest programs (Medicaid, Food Assistance, and Cash Assistance) have slowly receded, reversing a decade long trend of increases. Additionally, fewer recipients are receiving food and cash assistance, but more recipients are being served under Medicaid in relation to the Affordable Health Care laws.

The two Section 8 housing agencies that accommodate Des Moines County have also noticed differences. One official noted that the applications from out-of-staters has tapered off. This can be attributed to the knowledge that vouchers are not as easily obtainable. For the first time since September 2012, a waiting list was to be opened again, meaning that applications will be taken. Officials from both housing authorities continue to state that the addition would benefit all parties involved.

BURLINGTON TO HOST GUBERNATORIAL DEBATEThe Greater Burlington Partnership, along with our media partners, The Hawk Eye and KWQC TV-6 News, will play host to one of three statewide gubernatorial debates this fall.

Governor Terry Branstad (R) and Senator Jack Hatch (D) have both accepted the September 20 debate to be held at Edward Stone Middle School. The debate starts at 7 pm, and the one hour discussion will focus on economic prosperity and job creation.

This will be a no-charge ticketed event. More details will be emailed out and will also be in the August newsletter.

For more information, contact Mark Foster, Program Director, at [email protected] or 319-208-0050.

Makes you want to be an intern again, doesn’t it?

By making their time in the community a pleasurable one, we look forward to many of these individuals graduating in the coming years and returning to the are to work, play and have a family in the Greater Burlington community.

The McDonald’s at 900 Wellshire Drive celebrated its grand reopening after completing a restaurant remodeling project to update the interior and exterior of the building. The celebration took place on June 13 with a special appearance from Ronald McDonald.

The remodel features a sleek, modern decor, new signage and landscaping. The new lobby is outfitted with a high tech front counter ordering system including an easier-to-read digital menu board. A reconfigured drive-thru area offers customers greater efficiency with a wider, two-lane layout and improved menu signage and ordering system.

Owner Donna Mann says, “I am thrilled to be able to bring this newly renovated McDonald’s to the residents of Burlington. I take pride in being an active member of the community, and its always been important for me and for the restaurant to give back to Burlington.”

McDonald’s is the leading food service provider in the United States, serving a variety of wholesome food to more than 26 million customers every day. For more information, visit www.mcdonalds.com.

PARTNERSHIP HIRES INTERN TO HELP WITH PROJECTS AND INTERN PROGRAM MEET CONNER BRAKEVILLE! Conner joins the Greater Burlington Partnership for the summer intern program. Conner attends the University of Northern Iowa, majoring in public administration. Born and raised in Burlington, he has always dreamed of taking part in helping the community grow. “I now get to work with some of the best people Burlington has to offer, working with community members who volunteer their time and energy to make our city great,” said Conner.

“I am working with Downtown Partners in helping to revitalize the downtown community. While the downtown has made great strides in recent years, we want to do better. I am currently leading a group of volunteers to survey downtown districts in neighboring cities to help us discover new possibilities for our downtown. I am also leading the County Seat Bench Project to help beautify the downtown area. The best part is that I get to roll up my dress sleeves, grab a broom, and work with other volunteers in keeping the community clean and attractive. I have never been afraid of hard work, and I feel obligated to do the best I can with the understanding that all my efforts will help the community I love.”

“As a young intern, it has become a mission of mine to demonstrate that people my age can care about the health of their community. Wherever life may take me, I hope that I can make a positive difference in my hometown, and that my accomplishments can attest to the promise that the city of Burlington will always have a bright future.”

SHEILA NEWMAN ATTENDS 2014ABI CONFERENCESheila Newman, Program Director, attended the 2014 American Business Institute (ABI) Taking Care of Business Conference on June 11 with Michelle Randall, Leanne Krogmeier and Monica Hinkle from SCC, Lois Roth from Danville School District and Laurie Hempen from Winegard Company.

Scott Siepker moderated the session “Made in Iowa.” Siepker, an Iowa film maker, talks about how great Iowa is and the opportunities we have in our state. Siepker produced Iowa Nice and several other short videos on Iowa.

Mike Rowe, host of Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs and founder of mikeroweWorks Foundation, was the keynote speaker with the topic “Profoundly Disconnected?” Rowe talked about today’s skills gap and how it will take all of us working together to change the stigma attached to skilled trades jobs versus college education and careers. When asked how we fix the disconnect, Rowe referred to the national campaign started many years ago against litter, “Keep America Beautiful,” and its ongoing success. He challenged us as a nation to start a national campaign to reduce the stereotypes and stigmas associated with trade jobs, saying workers can be successful and have good careers in a skilled trade.

What started as a required activity of Greater Burlington Leadership blossomed into a rewarding and successful experience for many. In October 2013, the classmates of Greater Burlington Leadership were told they needed to complete a group project before the series ended in May of 2014.

The participants began putting ideas together, outlining what they would like to do and how they could involve the community. After a lot of thought, emails, meetings and effort, bringing Jack Hanna and his “Into the Wild Live” show was selected as the project, and plans began to fall into place. At the finale of the project, $26,641.43 was raised to support the Des Moines County Humane Society! The monies raised will be used to start a medical fund at the Humane Society.

Congratulations to the 2013 -2014 Greater Burlington Leadership class for a successful group project that directly benefited the community!
