Volume 39, Issue 5 May 2021 To all GFCACA Members, Finally, we are moving forward in our fight with COVID with vaccines rolling out. Every week I get the question, what will the rules be around the pool or beach or picnics. Given the guidance from the CDC and our Governor, we will expand as early as is rational while still maintaining safe practices. Look for regular updates over the next months. Id like to give a big shout out to Kevin Downing for organiz- ing our American Red Cross Blood Drives and to the many donors who have donated blood over the last year. Thanks to you, weve received a Certificate of Recognition for donating over 125 units in 2020. With your continued participation, we hope to double this amount in 2021! Please take a few minutes to read the minutes of the April Board Meeting and the GFC Facebook pages. Pool registra- tion has started and we expect high demand, so dont wait to join. Several of our committees (GFC park, marina/beach and lake park) are planning work days this spring, so keep on the lookout for announcements via Facebook and email. If youre new to the community, volunteering at these events is a great way to meet your neighbors! The GFCACA Directory has been printed and we are starting distribution! Each member household will get a Directory. Distribution plans are still being finalized, but well send out an email blast with details soon. We are up to 335 of our neighbors joining the Association. Our budget is based on 340 members, but we would like to hit 400 this year if possible. Membership is critical as it allows us to not just maintain but improve our facilities. If you see a new family moving in, please welcome them to the community, share with them how to join and pass their address along to our Welcome Committee Chair Pat Burke at [email protected]. And as always, a big thank you for the many hours of help from our board members, committee chairs and volunteers. Without you, we could not be the great community we are to- day and into the future. Thank you! If you have any questions, feedback or concerns, email me at [email protected]. Best regards, Terry Walker, President Phone: 703-966-5700 [email protected] GREATER FIRST COLONY NEWSLETTER Presidents Corner Board Meeng Minutes The April 15, 2021 Board meeting was called to order by President Terry Walker at 7:06 pm. Board members present were: Meghan Mayfield (Vice President), Denise Thomas (secretary), Brian ODay (Treasurer), Amy Day (Business Manager), and members-at-large Kathy Coburn, Becky Lov- ing, Brett Major and Katie Stratton. Roger Hunt (Tennis Chair), Andrew Mayfield (Marina Chair), Ann Hunt (Sunshine Chair) and Pat Burke (Welcome Committee) were also present. There was a quorum. Terry called for a motion that was made and seconded for approval of the minutes from the last Board meeting. The motion was approved. Meghan spoke about efforts to increase membership. Plans to post graphics on social media -advertising amenities (pool), upcoming marina projects, playground upgrades, landscaping - the things being paid from membership dues. Intent is to have people join now who might join later with the pool. Plans to purchase a laminator and will turn graphics into post- ers for the entrance notice boards. Membership is currently at 335, budgeted for 340. 400 members would be 80% of resi- dents. Next effort will be to dig into who doesnt join and target them. General discussion on how to reach folks not on Facebook. Perhaps post on Next Door. Other than that, best option is the entrance notice boards. Amy reported that residents on the 4 and 2 payment plan need to provide updated credit card information. She will be reach- ing out to them. Brian said that we are ahead of last year on membership dues. For unpaid/due to be paid membership dues we are at $9458 (of which only $1000 are unpaid or overdue). Last year this time was $8970. Some of this is because of the computer is- sues with the program used for payment (which is why Amy will be reaching out). There is a timing difference in the lake account - the pipe update was budgeted for last year, but not expensed until this year; however the money was carried for- ward to pay it. We are in good shape with liquid assets. GFCACA budget performance summary for March 2021 was presented. Revenue: $137,182; Operating Expenses: $54,024; Capital Expenditures: $48,506; Net Income: $34,662; Total liquid assets were $376,120 consisting of $67,645 in checking and $308,475 in the reserve fund (Davenport). Swim team account: $18,840. Committee Reports: Lake. Terry reported for Matt that it is time to renew the contract for duckweed remediation. This is budgeted and board approved moving forward.

Marina. Andrew reported that there is interest in a kayak launch to attach to the floating dock. As this is not budgeted he will have a fundraiser for it. He will design a T-shirt and work with Amy to create an event on social media. The dredge sur-vey will be completed this year and is already in the budget. Hopes to add 6 more wet slips and a transient slip next year while the dredge equipment is on site. He will get a quote and has board approval to proceed. Andrew noted that there are other repairs needed that were not budgeted (pot holes, hose bibs) and recommended shifting the funds for the roof repair to these items. Board approved. Andrew presented and the board discussed rules for marina use. There was discussion on age limits allowed without supervision. Final consensus: no one under 10 without a responsible person age 14 or older. Terry and Amy will check with insurance and update the board. All other rules were approved. He will announce a marina clean up day. Pool. Brian reported a pool update for Bobby. Proposed fees for this season are - FC family $375, couple $275, single $215. Non FC is an additional $35 in all categories. If we get the same number of members as 2019 we will be in good shape, we’d break even, but won’t be a $10K profit as in past years because the minimum wage has increased. After some discussion the board approved this rate schedule. Guest poli-cy has been revised. Local guests will be allowed two visits per year. No restrictions on out of town guests as long as rea-sonable. Welcome. Pat officially welcomed three families and met two that have not moved in yet. Everyone is excited to be here. She knows of three houses that have sold, but have no tenants yet. Pat recommended that new residents be provided a copy of the directory. Board approved. Sunshine. Ann had nothing to report. Tennis/Pickle Ball. Roger reported that one side is com-pletely done. Paint used is from Sherwin Williams and they also recommended a crack repair substance. Roger is watch-ing the cracks to see what’s happening. The courts are getting a lot of use! Swim Team. Terry reported for Laurel that the Flyers ex-pect to have a normal competition season. There will be changes to who is allowed on the pool deck.

Old Business: Directory. The directory is at the printer for a sample. Costs were reduced by 25-30% by changing the paper used. The cover will be 80# paper and inside sheets 20#. Distribution will likely be at the park with a drive by, stay in car and pick up. Jan suggested a new approach to gather data that will al-low for more efficient production of the directory. More to follow. She will also update the board when the directories are completed.

New Business: Garden Plots. The current lead for the community garden has requested a replacement to take over the lead for this project. She will be able to assist, but not with large jobs like clean up. A request for a volunteer will be put out on social media. There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:30 PM. Respectfully submitted,

Denise Thomas, Secretary

We sent our sympathy to Ron Losee of Pine Hollow Path on the passing of his wife Nan. I received a note that John Altonen of Fernwood had back surgery recently and will be in recovery until July. Ann Hunt, Sunshine Chair [email protected] 757-229-1384 I appreciate so much when neighbors inform me of sadness or sickness in our community. Please don’t assume that someone else will tell me. I would rather get 10 calls than none to alert me to sickness or any other adversity. We want those in pain to know that we care. It doesn’t take a minute to call or send me an email. Thanks to all those who keep me informed.

Garden Club

The Garden Club held its April meeting at the Pavilion. Our guest speaker was a GFC resident, John Broadwater. Mr. Broadwa-ter is the retired Acting State Underwater Archaeologist with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. He gave a riveting talk about his years working with the York River Maritime Heritage Project, investigating sunken ships in the York River from the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. Mr. Broadwater also spoke of the 1985 voyage of the Godspeed from London, England to Jamestown, an adventure packed trip where he served as First Mate.

In May we will be organizing a field trip to the Sweethaven Lavender Farm. New members are always welcome to join us. Please contact [email protected] for times, information and weather updates.
