Vol. 55, No. 04 April, 2008 Promoting the Enjoyment of Traditional and Digital Photography Greater New Orleans Photographic Society French Quarter Field Trip! Story by Jean Manale The March field trip started at the Cafe Du Monde with Stuart Fraser, Carole Pope, and myself. The Cafe Du Monde was so crowded that we could- n't get a seat. We started down Decatur Street stop- ping along the way to take several shots of different scenes, including the statue Joan of Arc and the musicians playing at a restaurant on the way to the flea market. The farmer's market area was closed for renovations, but I got an interesting shot of the empty archways and lights. Stuart came across a store front that he has been photographing, but has not been satis- fied with any of his previous shots. So he took the opportunity to shoot a re- take. We proceeded down Decatur. On the way to Royal Street we en- countered a woman begging for change, whom we successfully avoided. We walked along Royal Street for a short distant then turned towards Bourbon. We photographed an old diner and a house next to Jean Lafitte Bar. After Bourbon Street we pro- ceeded our walk to Jackson Square. By this time it was twilight, so we tried some night settings for night photography. The manual mode Coffee at Starbucks - At the end of the evening the group had a nice hot cup of coffee. Attendees are Stuart Fraser, Jean Manale, and Carole Pope. Photo provided by Stuart Fraser. French Quarter Balcony - Photo by Stuart Fraser. worked the best. We went into the Ca- thedral where we again encountered the same woman begging. We spent some time photographing the church interior and especially the candles for an upcoming assignment. We walked to Canal Place where Stuart bought Carole and I coffee. It was a beautiful evening to walk the French Quarter, and hopefully we got some good shots. See photos taken by Jean Manale on page 5.

Print Competitions The judge for the print competitions was Carroll Grevemberg. Bio from his website (grevy.com): Carroll S. Grevemberg is a photogra-pher that has been working profes-sionally since 1970. His photographic services include weddings, special events, location portraiture, and com-mercial photography. His approach as a photojournalist is to capture the story as it unfolds. This gives you the traditional wedding or event pictures as well as a remberance of your guests and their interactions. Carroll always provides you with his own personal service (unlike many larger studios). Carroll has photographed over 4,000 weddings, including celebrities like John Goodman, Arthel Neville & Gabrielle Union. His commercial pho-tography has appeared in various pub-lications such as: Town & Country, National Geographics, Time, Business Week, Washington Post & New York Times. He has also worked for Taylor Energy, Murphy Oil, Transco and Exxon. Thank you Mr. Carroll S. Grevemberg for judging the print competitions. We appreciate the thoughtful critique of the prints and the helpful tips you gave. After the judging Mr. Grevemberg showed us some of his beautiful wed-ding photography and the fantastic wedding albums he provides to his customers. See photos on page 4. Thank you Rose Parker for getting Carroll to judge the competitions. A special thank you to Jean Manale for doing a great job as the March chairperson.

Aquarium Photography!

The speaker for Thursday night was Richard Bejarano. He is a marine bi-ologist and has been working for the La. Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries since 1979. He is from San Juan, Puerto Rico and has done photography as a hobby for over 30 years. He presented his program "Aquarium Photography" that he gave last year to the Dixieland Divers, a Baton Rouge diving club. He included some of his shark slide images shot while in a cage and others shot while diving amongst the sharks. Mr. Bejarano continues to shoot slide film because he feels the images are superior to digital images in many ways. Thank you Mr. Bejarano for a very interesting slideshow. The club en-joyed your presentation. And thank you Rose Parker for arranging to have Mr. Bejarano give his slideshow to our club. See photos more photos on page 6.
