YMCA ENDOWMENT FUND
What is the YMCA Endowment Fund?
One of the characteristics of our day is the tendency of men and women to make
provisions for perpetuation of their influence beyond their lifetime. More and more
persons of both large and small means are setting aside a portion of their resources
to continue benevolent interest in the people of their community. Anyone
contemplating such provisions for the future naturally want assurance that money
provided for this purpose will:
Accomplish some permanent good.
Help build the community of the future as one would like to do—if still living.
Be managed wisely with an emphasis on benevolent stewardship.
Go on to an organization which is stable, well managed, in touch with public
sentiment and capable of meeting the changing conditions of the future.
The boys and girls and young men and women who need the service of the YMCA
most, cannot afford to pay all that it costs to render this service. To increase the
fees sufficiently to make the work self-supporting would shut out from its benefits
those who need them most.
To ensure universal accessibility of programs and services offered by the YMCA
there are needs to be a firm financial foundation supporting your YMCA. An adequate
Endowment Fund is needed.
Endowment Funds stabilize the work at the same time provide for expansion and
new directions. Constantly changing social conditions require new methods and new
programs; a growing population requires expansion of proven programs. It is
impossible to increase current earnings support from the United Way, fees paid by
participants and contributions rapidly enough to meet these demands. Endowment
Funds will make it possible to answer some of these calls where the need is urgent.
Many friends of the youth and of the YMCA have made gifts or provisions in their
wills whereby their lifetime ideals and interests have been perpetuated and their
annual contributions capitalized. This opportunity is open to all, whether the gifts or
bequests be large or small. You, too, can make a lifetime gift or bequest to
strengthen and extend the services of the Young Men’s Christian Association.
For any further information, please contact Executive Directors, Bonnie Wassmer or
Ron Marshall, at 286-5636 or 742-7321 respectively.

YMCA Fun Facts &
History The YMCA was founded in London, England, on
June 6, 1844 by George Williams.
The first YMCA was started as a Bible Study and
prayer group to substitute for the unhealthy social
conditions during the Industrial Revolution.
Volleyball, Racquetball,
Softball, Professional
Football and Basketball were
all created at the YMCA!
The "Peace Corps" was
founded in 1961 by
President Kennedy after the
YMCA's program of World
Service Workers, which
started in the 1880's.
The 3 corners of
the YMCA triangle
represent, spirit,
mind & body.
In December 1891, at the International YMCA Training School in
Springfield, Mass., the school’s director,
Dr. Luther Gulick, gave physical education teacher James Naismith
two weeks to come up with an indoor winter game to
challenge a class of future Y directors. Naismith hung
peach baskets to the bottom of a second-level running track
and taught the men his new game: basketball. Today, basketball is
second only to soccer as the most popular sport in the world.
