For many thousands of years, the Okanagan Valley was the undisputed home of the InteriorSalish. Early in the 19th century, fur traders usednative trails along Okanagan Lake to export fursfrom the area to the outside world. By the1860’s, gold discoveries had brought minersand missionaries to the valley. Settlers soon followed and land was pre-empted for ranchesin Coldstream, Vernon, and Okanagan Landing.Wagon roads replaced the old pack trails, andwith the arrival of a branch line of the CPR in1892, settlers were able to reach the larger markets outside the Okanagan Valley. Improvedtransportation led to increased immigration andsoon the large ranches were being sub-dividedinto smaller holdings. Major irrigation schemesallowed for the intensive planting of orchardsand field crops. After a major population boombetween 1907 and 1912, rumours of war curbedthe influx of European capital into the Okanaganand the major land companies experienced financial collapse.

Vernon had been a centre for military trainingexercises since 1908, and as WWI progressed, soldiers came from all parts of Canada to train at Camp Vernon. Vernon’s first airport openedon Mission Hill, and private schools welcomedstudents with the promise of a British education. The confidence of the 1920’s was followed bythe depression of the 1930’s as the supply of orchard fruit vastly exceeded the demand. Road and rail transportation improved enoughthat the CPR discontinued sternwheeler passenger service on Okanagan Lake.

Another war brought more troops for training at Camp Vernon, while the end of the war saw a new tide of immigration to the valley.

Postwar optimism produced improvements in communication, education, transportation, and entertainment. Orchards began to disappear as orchardists sold out to eager developers. The army camp came alive once more in 1949,this time with the arrival of cadets from acrossCanada. The completion of new highways to the coast and Alberta added tourism to the economic mix. New construction from the1960’s to present day has included a civic centre, a recreation complex, several shoppingmalls, library, multiplex, and a performing artscentre. The city continues to thrive - a uniquehistory, a diversified economy, a beautiful natural setting, and a balance between sportsand cultural activities have all contributed tomaking Vernon the "Top of the Okanagan".

The beginnings of the Greater Vernon Museumand Archives can be traced back to three men:Charles Haines, David Howrie, Sr., and W.C.Pound. Haines, a resident of Coldstream, hadtrained as a cabinet-maker and taxidermist.Howrie was in the construction business andhad been mayor of Vernon from 1943-1948.Pound had worked in Vernon as a taxidermistand furrier for 58 years. When Pound passedaway in 1949, his mounted specimens were left to the city with the understanding that thecollection would become the nucleus for a museum. Haines and Howrie then took on thetask. Haines, using the Pound specimen’s along with artifacts from his own collections, contributed hundreds of hours of volunteer time to the creation of museum displays. In the meantime, Howrie handled the politics of developing the structure of the organization. The first museum was located in the back roomsof W.L. Seaton School and on June 6th, 1950,Mayor T.R.B. Adams officially opened the museum to the public. In 1967, the museummoved to its present location. From humble beginnings, the Vernon Museum now occupiesover 12,000 square feet of space and attractsthousands of visitors each year.

No matter where you stay in the NorthOkanagan, you won’t want to miss a day at Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park.Renowned for its unusual emerald greencolors, National Geographic noted Kalamalka Lake as one of the top 10 most beautiful and most photographedlakes in the world.

While locally the lake is knows as “TheLake of Many Colors”, its name actuallyderives from the Indian Chief who lived atthe head of the lake. The lake is known asa “Marl Lake”. As the lake warms, calciumcarbonate or limestone crystals are formedcalled “marl” which reflect the sunlight andcreate the magnificent emerald color withribbons of deep blue.

GREY CANAL HISTORIC TRAILAn ambitious irrigation project in 1906 resulted in 46 km (19 miles) of irrigationditches, dam flumes, pump and reservoirs of the Grey Canal, one of the most extensive systems ever built in British Columbia. It is a gently undulating trail withspectacular valley views. Today, the full length of the trail is 4.8 km, ending atGlenhayes Rd. Interpretive signs offer some insight into the Grey Canal then andnow. The trailhead is just off Silver Star Road on Blackcomb Way, 1.5 km from BXSchool. Return by the same route to the parking area off Silver Star Road, but ashorter loop of 3.5 km is an option. Dogs allowed between Silver Star & Rugg Rd.

BX FALLS AND CREEKA short walk along thiscool and lush trail will takeyou back 600 millionyears. The Creek canyonis a melt water channelfrom the last ice age. This trail has a trailheadand parking at each end,it does not loop. This trail starts at thehigh end, the Tillicum Rd.parking lot, 2 km from thejunction of Silver Star Rd.The trail ends at Star Rdwith an option to connectto the Grey Canal Trail. The total trail length is2.2 km with some stairsand steep sections.
