ANNUAL REPORT

It’s the year of the GOAT—a.k.a. the Greatest of All Time—thanks to our Youth of the Year D’Naeya Gray’s inspiring story of the billy goat overcoming all obstacles. If you haven’t seen her must-see speech visit youtube.com/bgchutch. We believe our dedicated our Vision Leaders, form the lifelong relationships with members which make our program successful. The Vision Leaders gracing our cover are a sample of the more than 50 who help create Great Futures. Our Avenue A site became a 21st Century Community Learning site last fall; it has more space than ever thanks to USD308. We are thankful for the continued strong relationship. We are thrilled to see so many local businesses stepping up to support Great Futures for Hutchinson’s youth. In 2019 we are proud to say we have 22 Blue Team members.

When I came to the Club at age 10, I was going through a really rough patch with my parents getting divorced and I was at an impressionable age. At that point in my life I was trying to out who I was and who I would become in the world. The Club really gave me the opportunity to out who I wanted to become.

Do you have a favorite memory from your time growing up at the Boys & Girls Club?

My favorite thing the Club me was the opportunity to do a lot of traveling...I was always going somewhere. They sent me to Orlando, FL several times, to Atlanta, GA, Dallas, TX, Minneapolis, MN, and Little Rock, AR. I was recognized nationally and was given the opportunity to go to Atlanta and tour the Weather Center.

What do you do today at your position in Wichita?

My past life with the Club and my time with Meritrust Credit Union sort of collide. I am still the mission and doing the work that I did during my time at the Boys & Girls Club. A lot of those travel opportunities didn’t come for free—there was a lot of hitting the pavement and fundraising and getting out in the community and doing a lot of outreach; I am still doing that now in my career. I love what I do, getting people in new homes and getting to help people make sound decisions in their lives.

“The Club really gave me the opportunity to figure out who I wanted to become.”

The Club's Journey to Becoming Trauma Informed

Brenda Higginbotham• Director of Program Development• Vision Leader since 1992

What does it mean to be trauma informed?

Being trauma informed means recognizing that trauma is present in our Club and how we can respond to the physical and emotional needs of our Club members. Many of the children have had toxic stress in their lives.

How can we recognize when children have been triggered?

Typically children will be in a or freeze mode when there is a trigger. In a stressful situation a child might freeze up, not say anything, shut down emotionally, they might or verbally act out—or they might the area.

Describe the Club’s journey to become trauma-informed and how it has changed your daily work.

We started this journey a year and a half ago with a book study, but Boys & Girls Clubs have naturally been built to be trauma informed. We just didn’t realize that we were trauma informed. We have become more intentional in how we address children with their needs and we train our to be patient and show empathy with our Club members.

It’s something that we’re not going to notice today, tomorrow, in a week, or maybe even next year. This journey is a long road and as we continue we are going to see children’s lives

positively impacted.

Page 11: GREATEST OF ALL TIME · • a charitable trust, • a life insurance policy, • a remainder gift from a retirement plan, • a charitable gift annuity, or • an IRA rollover. For

We have chosen programs to help foster social and emotional learning. Those programs are Positive Action and mentoring. Positive Action works on the premise that, “When you feel good, you do good.” It teaches children how to cope with everyday stresses and how to take care of their bodies and their minds. For mentoring, we target children who have some trauma or toxic stress in their lives. We track social and emotional learning to see if they’ve made progress through positive mentor relationships.

Please explain social and emotional learning (SEL).

SEL is the capability for children and adults to recognize and deal with strong emotions. Those who have a high EQ (emotional IQ) can handle themselves appropriately when toxic stress is in their lives. Children with a lower EQ are typically the children who act out, often with the or freeze mode.

On our membership applications we now ask more questions about the child’s medical history. One of the biggest surprises is to know that many of our children are with autism, are on the autism spectrum or have ADHD. Knowing that, we are able to target and help kids who have come through stressful times. We are more intentional in how we interact. It is a culture shift in our school system and for anyone who deals with children and their families.

What has been the biggest surprise for you as we have transitioned to these new approaches to interacting with and teaching our members?

I think the most frustrating thing is that we expect a quick for the children and what they may be going through. It’s something that we’re not going to notice today, tomorrow, in a week, or maybe even next year. This journey is a long road and as we continue we are going to see children’s lives positively impacted.
