architectural and artistic complex bequeathed by Greek Antiquity to the world. In the second half of the

fifth century bc, Athens, following the victory against the Persians and the establishment of

democracy, took a leading position amongst the other city-states of the ancient world. In the age that

followed, as thought and art flourished, an exceptional group of artists put into effect the ambitious

plans of Athenian statesman Pericles and, under the inspired guidance of the sculptor Pheidias,

transformed the rocky hill into a unique monument of thought and the arts. The most important

monuments were built during that time: the Parthenon, built by Ictinus, the Erechtheon, the Propylaea,

the monumental entrance to the Acropolis and the small temple Athena Nike”.

GreeceAIST Tour of Greece: More info can be found on www.frommers.com.

Greece: Greece is, of course, the land of ancient sites and architectural treasures -- the Acropolis in Athens, the amphitheater of

Epidaurus, and the reconstructed palace at Knossos among the best known. But Greece is much more: It offers age-old

spectacular natural sights, for instance -- from Santorini's caldera to the gray pinnacles of rock of the Meteora -- and modern

diversions ranging from elegant museums to luxury resorts.

It can be bewildering to plan your trip with so many options vying for your attention. Take us along and we'll help you figure it out.

We've explored the archaeological sites, visited the museums, inspected the hotels, reviewed the tavernas and ouzeries, and

scoped out the beaches. Here's what we consider the best of the best.

Mykonos: What is it about Mykonos that has captured the world's imagination for over 40 years and refuses to let go? Though it

is an undeniably beautiful island, it isn't the prettiest Greek island, or even the prettiest in the Cyclades. It used to be the island's

cosmopolitan lifestyle, luxury hotels, and nightlife drew crowds, but today many of the more popular islands claim to be able to

compete with that. It used to be its title as the party capital of all Mediterranean islands that set it apart, yet today Spain's Ibiza

shares that title. So what is it then?

It all began with the picture-perfect town of labyrinthine roads leading you in circles around the beautiful cubist Cycladic

architecture that attracted the likes of Jackie Kennedy and Aristotle Onassis in the '60s. With their stamp of approval, Mykonos

became the place to be for anybody who was anybody. Soon, in the hedonistic '70s, it became the island version of Studio 54,

making world headlines on celebrity pages and magazines. The sheer contrast of a traditional Greek fishing village and the type of

tourists it attracted -- gay partiers, international jet-setters, celebrities, and models -- made the island a unique place to visit, and it

captured the world's imagination.

Santorini: No island better epitomizes the Greek vacation experience than Santorini. Upon arriving by boat, there's a view that

never palls: sugar-cube houses pasted onto the high clifftops of Fira's caldera (crater), washed by the cobalt Aegean and a light

so pure and bright it makes you blink. Watched over by its famous smoldering volcano and steeped in lost-city-of-Atlantis myth,

this is the Greece of photogenic sunsets and Hollywood backdrops, of blue-domed churches and donkey rides.

Beaches - Santorini's perpendicular coastline is pure drama. Pebbly Red Beach, White Beach and Black Beach named for the

color of the cliffs above them, lie in the southwest. The lively southeast trio of Perissa, Agios Georgios and Perivolos are best

for nightlife and watersports like windsurfing and jet skiing. Rock formations create a striking backdrop in family-

friendly Monolithos. For total seclusion, descend the cliffs or hitch a donkey ride to one of Oia's postage-stamp beaches, with

deep and startlingly blue water.

Delphi: 178km (110 miles) NW of Athens - Delphi is the big enchilada of Greek sites. Even more than Olympia, this place has it

all: a long and glorious history, spectacular ancient remains, a superb museum, and a beautiful location on the slopes of Mount

Parnassus. Look up and you see the cliffs and crags of Parnassus; look down, and Greece's most beautiful plain of olive trees

stretches as far as your eyes can see, toward the town of Itea on the Gulf of Corinth.

Delphi is especially magical in the spring, when there's often both snow and wildflowers on Parnassus -- and fewer tourists

tramping around the site than in summer. But whenever you visit, you'll understand why the ancient Greeks believed that Delphi

was the center of the world, the spot Apollo chose as the home of his most famous oracle. TheSanctuary of Apollo is the main

attraction here, although the smaller Sanctuary of Athena has Delphi's most photographed attraction, the mysterious round

tholos (discussed later).6
