    Since 1935, The Upper Room has been and continues to be committed to offering a variety of settings in

    which people may meet God. Magazines, books, programs and special events like this pilgrimage are all settings forthis kind of encounter. Our hope is that these publications and programs foster growth in the Christian spiritual life.

    This pilgrimage is a unique opportunity for friends of The Upper Room to journey together as spiritual companionswhile visiting historic New Testament sites and ancient monasteries in a distant land. Well meet and talk with Chris-tians from Greece and with Christian leaders from other countries who serve as international editors ofThe UpperRoom. We are celebrating our global connections with a series of editorial conferences or family reunions, and youare invited to be part of this very special one!

    As with all pilgrimages, the journey is often as important as the destination. Thats why spiritual preparation is soimportant for this trip. Those who register will be given instruction prior to the trip on how to prepare spiritually.

    Why is The Upper Room offering this pilgrimage experience?

    Travel Depart US: Friday, September 30. Arrive in Thessaloniki: Saturday, October 1. Depart for US: Saturday, October 8 OR Monday, October 10.

    The Greek pilgrimage includes: 5 days exploring historic Christian sites in Thessaloniki,

    Philippi, Athens and Corinth, while learning about Greekhistory and culture in Veria and Neapolis.

    1 day exploring Eastern Orthodox Christian monasteries atMeteora.

    Luxury hotel accommodations at hotels such as the PoseidonPalace in Leptokaira and at the Titania in Athens.

    An evening gathering with our international editors ofTheUpper Room daily devotional guide.

    Guided daily spiritual practices prayer, journaling, reectionled by Elizabeth Canham and Jerry Haas.

    Trip extensions include your choice: Cruise the Greek Islesfor 1 day, Cruise the Greek Isles and Ephesus for 3 days, ORenjoy a day tour of Athens.

    Day by Day ScheduleOur schedule is designed to allow us to see as much as wecan in Greece without a hectic pace. Each day, well be guidedin spiritual practices that will shape our journey together. The

    schedule below is subject to change but offers a reliable idea ofhow our pilgrimage will progress.

    Saturday, October 1 - Arrive in Thessaloniki (Macedonia Inter-national Airport) and take a 90 minute drive to the hotel. Stay inLeptokaira at the Poseidon Palace or comparable hotel.

    Sunday, October 2 - Travel to Veria (ancient Berea) andThessoloniki. We will be traveling to Veria (ancient Berea),where Paul visited and preached in the Jewish synagogue andto the Greek nobility who readily accepted the new faith (Acts17:10-15). In this city there is a monument dedicated to theApostle Paul. We visit the Jewish quarter where the synagogueis still situated. We then proceed to the city of Thessaloniki. Paulwrote two epistles to Thessalonians, both in the New Testament

    canon. We will visit the Agora (Forum) and the ArcheologicalMuseum and Basilica of Saint Demetrios.

    Monday, October 3 - Day trip to Philippi and Neapolis (Kavala).In Philippi (Acts 16 & 17), we will visit the river where Paulbaptized Lydia, a purple fabric merchant, who became the rstChristian woman to be baptized on European soil. We will alsosee a crypt, dating from the Roman period, which according tothe Churchs tradition was the place where Paul was oggedand imprisoned. Also at Philippi we will see, the ancientRoman Agora (Forum) and the Basilicas and the Greek Theatre(4th century BC), which was converted into an arena by theRomans and used during the persecutions of the early daysof the church. We will also see Neapolis (present-day Kavalla),Greeces most picturesque mainland port. Paul arrived in this

    city with his coworkers Timothy and Silas. On the way back toThessaloniki we will see the remains of the ancient famous roadVia Egnatia. We will pass by the ancient cities of Amphipolisand Apollonia, which are mentioned in the Book of Acts. Dinnerand overnight at the Poseidon Hotel.

    Tuesday, October 4 Visit Meteora and drive to Athens(4 hours). Visit the wonderful place of Meteora monasteries atthe top of exotic rocks. This is a tremendous introduction to theEastern Orthodox Church. Well then travel to Athens for dinnerand overnight at the Titania or comparable hotel in Athens.

    Wednesday, October 5 Athens. The architectural splendors ofthis ancient city are majestic. We will visit the world-renownedhill of Acropolis. Special emphasis will be on the visit to theAreopagus (Mars Hill), where Paul gave his famous speech tothe Athenian philosophers (Acts 17:18-34). We will also be visit-ing, in the same area, the Ancient Agora (Forum), where Paulmet the philosophers. We will also see the Stoa of Attalus andthe Temple of Hephaestus. Athens is where the meanings ofDemocracy, city assembly (ecclesia) and reasoning (logos) wererst dened and practiced in this part of the world. Many of theterms used by the Athenian Democracy were incorporated in theChurchs terminology, e.g. ecclesia, logos. Free time for shoppingin the famous Plaka area of the Flee Market of Athens. Dinnerand overnight at the hotel in Athens.

    Thursday, October 6 Corinth and an evening gathering witheditors of The Upper Room daily devotional guide internationalversions in Sunion. Corinth is the city where Paul stayed duringhis rst visit for one and a half years--the longest he stayed inany of the cities he visited except Ephesus. Paul wrote at leastfour letters addressed to the Church of Corinth, two of which arefound in the New Testament. From Corinth he wrote three andpossibly four epistles addressed to the rst Christians in Rome,Thessaloniki and Galatia. We will be visiting the ArchaeologicalMuseum; the Ancient Agora (Forum); and the Bema where Paulstood in front of Gallio (Acts 18:12-17), the Roman Pro-Consul ofAchaea. We will be seeing the inscription of Erastus the treasur-er of the city, mentioned in Acts 19:22, Romans 16:23; and2 Timothy 4:20. We will also enjoy seeing the Temple of Apollo

    and the hill of Acrocorinth, where the famous Temple of Aphro-dite was during the classical Greece period. Special Greek dinnethis night at the CosmoVision Center along with The Upper

    Room international European editors. Overnight at the hotel.

    Friday, October 7 OPTIONS: Free day in Athens. Return to hotel overnight for Saturday,

    October 8, departure to the US. 1-day cruise of Greek Isles (Poros, Ydra, and Aigina). Return to

    hotel overnight for Saturday, October 8, departure to the US 3-day cruise of Greek Isles and Ephesus Asia Minor. Depar-

    ture for the US on Monday, October 10.
