stayed home to raise daughter Pebbles and keep house, using the modern conveniences of a wooly mammoth vacuum cleaner, pelican washing ma-chine, and a pig garbage disposal.

• A romance between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy seemed doomed from the start. Jane Austen’s 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice narrated the story of the very wealthy but snobbish and rude proprietor of Pemberley Estate, and the wit-ty and intelligent Miss Bennet. Good marriages to wealthy men were vital to the five Bennet sisters, as their property and home was destined to be in-herited by a male cousin upon the death of their father. Sparks flew from the beginning, when Mr. Darcy insulted Elizabeth’s appearance. When he finally realized hisattraction and proposed to her, he did so while still reminding her of the large difference in their social statuses. Lizzie’s nega-tive response reminded him of his arrogance and conceit, assuring him he was “the last man in the world I could ever be prevailed upon to marry.” However, as with all good romances, love tri-umphed as Mr. Darcy realized his pride, she rec-ognized her prejudice, and Miss Bennet accepted the second marriage proposal.

• Barbara Millicent Roberts met Ken Sean Car-son in 1961. Barbara, aka “Barbie”, had been on store shelves since 1959, but her hunky boyfriend wasn’t introduced until two years later, when the two “met” on the imaginary set of a TV com-mercial. Each of them has had a wide variety of occupations over the years, Barbie having been a teacher, dentist, veterinarian, Air Force jet pilot, firefighter, astronaut, and ballerina, among many others. Ken has worked as a pizza delivery boy, rock star, pro tennis player, and doctor, just a few of his 40+ careers. After 43 years as a couple, Mat-tel announced they had split in 2004, but in 2006, after Ken received an extensive makeover, they were reunited.

• The 1961 musical film West Side Story chronicled the story of Tony and Maria, a tale loosely based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, New York City style. The story revolved around the rivalry between two street gangs, the Sharks and the Jets. Tony, co-founder of the Jets, fell in love with Mar-ia, the sister of the Sharks founder, a combination that could only result in disaster. Richard Beymer took the role of Tony after it was declined by Elvis Presley, and Natalie Wood was chosen over the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Jill St. John. The film, which ended with the deaths of both

• Maria’s brother and Tony, took home 10 Oscars, including Best Picture and was the second high-est-grossing film of the year. It ranks #51 on the American Film Institute’s list of 100 best movies.

• Although the love story about Lois Lane and Clark Kent, aka Superman, has been told in many different ways in various forms of media, they were first introduced in June of 1938 in the DC Comics publication Action Comics #1. Their ro-mance started out as a rivalry, after Clark scooped Lois on a story at the Daily Planet, an exclusive on Superman. Clark was enamored with Lois, but ironically, her affections were fixed on his al-ter-ego Superman. The couple didn’t tie the knot

until 1996 when the event was published in the comic book to coincide with the nuptials on the TV series Lois and Clark. In 2007, they welcomed the addition of an adopted Kryptonian boy then named Chris Kent.

• Peter Parker made his first appearance in August of 1962 in the Marvel Comics’ publication Amaz-ing Fantasy. He was an orphaned high school stu-dent in Queens, New York, living with his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. When he was bitten by a ra-dioactive spider, he attained the “agility and pro-portionate strength of an arachnid,” and acquired the ability to cling to walls and ceilings. In other words, he became Spiderman! Aunt May continu-ally tried to fix him up with “that nice Watson girl next door,” a beautiful green-eyed redhead whose face was first seen in 1966. Mary Jane, or MJ for short, first met Peter when she was 13 years old, and staying with her elderly Aunt Anna. Peter was 14. They married in a Spiderman comics is-sue in 1987. On the big screen, the pair was popu-larly portrayed by Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst for three films. The fourth film, released in 2012, didn’t include MJ, but rather Peter’s first girlfriend, Gwen Stacy.

• Author Edgar Rice Burroughs conceived the idea of the British Lord and Lady Greystoke being ma-rooned on the coast of Africa in 1912. Lady Grey-stoke gave birth there, but died on her son’s first birthday, while the Lord was killed by the leader of the Mangani ape tribe. Their son, John, Clay-ton, Earl of Greystoke, was adopted by the ape tribe, and grew up to be their leader. Thus went the story of Tarzan over the course of 24 novels. Tarzan met Jane Porter when she and her expedi-tion were marooned in a similar manner. The pair married in Burroughs’ second book, published in 1913. The immensely popular series led to radio programs, comic books, and 89 movies, begin-ning with silent films in 1918. The most popular actor to play the ape-man was an Olympic hero, Johnny Weissmuller, winner of five gold med-als in swimming, who starred in 12 Tarzan films from 1932 to 1948.

• Homer and Marge Simpson were first introduced to TV viewers in December, 1989, along with their three children, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. The blue-haired Marge Bouvier met Homer Simpson dur-ing her final year at Springfield High School. Al-though the couple might be a little rough around the edges, they seem to have a way of working through their difficulties with unending dedica-tion to each other. Actress Julie Kavner provides not only the voice of Marge in the animated series, but Marge’s mother Jacqueline and sisters Patty and Selma as well. Dan Castellaneta voices Hom-er, Grampa Simpson, Krusty the Clown, Barney Gumble, Mayor Quimby, and Hans Moleman.

LANGUAGE OF FLOWERSAre you thinking of sending flowers to someone

special on Valentine’s Day? You may want to check out of the meaning of some of our favorite blossoms before doing so!

• Floriography, or the language of flowers, began during the Victorian era, when individuals used flower symbolism to express feelings they were unable to speak aloud, or wanted a discreet form of communication. Various blooms were used to send secret or coded messages of love and other sentiments. Flower dictionaries containing the meanings of different varieties filled the shelves as the long list grew.

• Most of us know that sending red roses denotes enduring, passionate romantic love, meant for the love of your life. Pink roses are for a lesser af-fection, and yellow are to be used to symbolize the joy of a devoted friendship. While white roses represent purity and virtue, a bouquet of mixed red and white roses is used to designate unity with your loved one. Can’t afford a dozen roses? Just a single red rose in full bloom also says, “I love you.” Trying to tell your loved one it was love at first sight? Lavender roses are the symbol for that sentiment.

• Blue flowers are used to send a message of calm, beauty, tranquility, and peace. Specifically, blue hyacinths indicate constancy and faithfulness, as do blue violets, which represent faithfulness and say, “I’ll always be true.” If violets are unavailable, blue forget-me-nots also let the recipient know that your love is true.

• The towering stems of gladioli are symbolic of a sword, and they even take their name from the Lain word gladius, meaning “sword.” A bouquet of these stunning spikes expresses to the recipient that he or she has “pierced the giver’s heart with passion.”

• If your sweetheart is a rare beauty, send her the gift of orchids. Perhaps there is someone to whom you’d like say, “You’re lovely,” but you want to do it secretly, without divulging your identity. The gardenia is an excellent symbol for this purpose. Asking to have your affection returned? Deliver jonquils, a fragrant member of the narcissus fam-ily.

• Is there an individual who you highly respect? A sunny bunch of daffodils will convey that mes-sage. However, if you’re trying to tell your ego-tistical acquaintance, “You love yourself too well,” have the florist deliver narcissus.

• Who wouldn’t want to receive a bouquet of prim-roses? Their message is, “I can’t live without you.” Similarly, white lilies proclaim, “It’s heavenly to be with you,” and Calla lilies are representative of “magnificent beauty.”

• Perhaps you’ve offended your loved one. Sending purple hyacinths says, “I am sorry, please forgive me.” Receiving striped carnations means a refusal to an offer of affection, and declares, “Sorry, I can’t be with you.”

• You certainly don’t want to receive a gift of fox-glove, symbolic of insincerity, or a Venus flytrap, representing deceit, or rhododendron, meaning danger or caution. Likewise, marigolds are a dec-laration of jealousy.

• Are you thinking of a dear but absent friend? A bouquet of mixed pansies will convey those re-membrances. The pansy even takes its name from the French word, pensée, meaning “thought or remembrance.”

This week’s game of the week featured the top two teams in the 4A Tri-Valley league; Windsor and Roosevelt. The winner in this one would earn its place as number 1 in the league, at least for the week ahead.

After a complete turn-around from last season, the Roosevelt Roughriders found themselves with a one game lead over the Wizards. With several seniors contributing, Roosevelt looked poised and ready for district play but Coach Brown stressed a strong finish with only six regular season games remaining.

Windsor was looking to make up for a tough loss on January 29th where Freder-

ick handled the Wizards; 82-71. Thanks in part to this week’s Loveland Ford Player of the week, Senior Dylan Ochsner, the

Wizards won this one with rela-tive ease; 84-58. Ochsner fin-ished the game with 25 points and a solid defensive perform-ance that helped contribute to this big win.

KFKA’s game of the week will feature another Wizards game this Friday, February 8th, when Windsor hosts Mead. Stick with 1310 KFKA all season long as they are the leader in Preps cov-

erage. For more on games like this, col-lege and national sports news, tune into Agfinity’s Sports Day; Weekdays-11a-1p on 1310 KFKA.

A big-city lawyer was representing the rail-road in a lawsuit filed by an old rancher. The rancher’s prize bull was missing from

the section through which the railroad passed. The rancher only wanted to be paid the fair value of the bull. The case was scheduled to be tried before the justice of the peace in the back room of the general store. The attorney for the railroad immediately cor-nered the rancher and tried to get him to settle out of court. The lawyer did his best selling job, and finally the rancher agreed to take half of what he was asking. After the rancher had signed the release and took the check, the young lawyer couldn’t resist gloating a little over his success, telling the rancher, “You know, I hate to tell you this, old man, but I put one over on you in there. I couldn’t have won the case. The engineer was asleep and the fireman was in the caboose when the train went through your ranch that morning. I didn’t have one witness to put on the stand. I bluffed you!” The old rancher replied, “Well, I’ll tell you, young feller, I was a little worried about winning that case myself, because that durned bull came home this morning.”

The farmer’s son was returning from the market with the crate of chicken’s his father had entrusted to him, when all of a sudden

the box fell and broke open. Chickens scurried off in different directions, but the determined boy walked all over the neighborhood scooping up the wayward birds and returning them to the repaired crate. Hoping he had found them all, the boy re-luctantly returned home, expecting the worst.“Pa, the chickens got loose,” the boy confessed sadly, “but I managed to find all twelve of them.”“Well, you did real good, son,” the farmer beamed. “You left with seven.”

A Texan farmer goes to Australia for a vaca-tion. There he meets an Aussie farmer and gets talking. The Aussie shows off his

big wheat field and the Texan says, “Oh! We have wheat fields that are at least twice as large”. Then they walk around the ranch a little and the Aussie shows off his herd of cattle. The Texan im-mediately says, “ We have longhorns that are at least twice as large as your cows”. The conversation has, meanwhile, almost died when the Texan sees a herd of kangaroos hopping through the field. He asks, “And what are those”? The Aussie asks with an incredulous look, “Don’t you have any grasshoppers in Texas”?

FAMOUS WOMEN OF THE WORLD:

GRANDMA MOSESGrandma Moses is proof positive that you’re never

too old to learn something new. Take a look at the life of this celebrated folk artist who started a new career in her 70s.

• Grandma Moses was born Anna Mary Robertson in upstate New York in 1860. As a child, she be-gan painting, squeezing juice out of grapes and lemons to obtain colors.

• At the tender age of 12, Anna left home to work on a neigh-boring farm doing housework. At 27, she married one of the farm’s hired men, Thomas Mo-ses. While on their honeymoon to North Carolina, the couple spied a farm in Virginia they liked, and invested their meager $600 savings to rent the place, where they remained for 20 years. For spare cash, Anna sold homemade potato chips and butter to the neighbors. The Moses had 10 children, only five of whom survived.

• The family then moved to a farm at Eagle Bridge, New York, and it was here that Anna completed her first painting. While wallpapering her parlor, she ran out of paper, pasted up plain white paper and painted a scene. That first work still hangs to-day in a Bennington, Vermont museum.

• When Anna was 67, Thomas passed away and she handed over the farm duties to her son and daughter-in-law. During her spare time, she em-broidered pictures with yarn wool, which were much admired by family and friends. However, arthritis set in, forcing her to give up her needle-work when it became too difficult to hold the nee-dle. But she could hold a brush, and so turned to painting at age 76.

• Grandma Moses laid Masonite flat on an old kitchen table for her work rather than using an easel. She shared her “studio” with the washer and dryer. She charged $2 for a small painting and $3 for a large one. When she was 78, an art collec-tor from New York City happened to be driving through Grandma’s small community and saw her paintings in the window of the W.D. Thomas Pharmacy. He bought every one, then drove to the Moses’ farm to purchase all she had on hand. Three major exhibits followed shortly after, and

Anna was on the road to fame. • Grandma Moses lived past her 101st birthday. LIFE magazine featured her on the cover of its September, 19, 1960 issue in honor of her 100th birthday. Twenty-five paintings were done after she hit the century mark. Her art hangs in nine U.S. museums, and another hangs in the White House. In 2004, one of her painting appeared on the PBS broadcast Antiques Roadshow, where it was appraised at $60,000. The painting “The Old Checkered House, 1862,” had been purchased in the 1940s for less than $10, and had appeared in a 1946 ad cam-

• It was noted American poet Ogden Nash, best known as a composer of droll verse, who made the following sage observation: “Some tortures are physical / And some are mental, / But the one that is both / Is dental.”

• According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, if you’re like the average American, you consume 132 pounds of sugar every year. Compare that to folks in the year 1700, who consumed only about 4 pounds of sugar per year.

• If you cook a single ostrich egg, you can feed 24 people.

• When you studied history in school, you probably didn’t learn about Edward Hyde. He was a cousin to Queen Anne and was appointed to the post of colonial governor of New York, in which position he served from 1702 to 1708. Though he’s not well known now, he was quite the talk of the colo-nies in his day. It seems that when a delegation of colonists went to his mansion to welcome the new governor, they found him sitting on the front porch, crocheting a doily and wearing one of his wife’s dresses. At his first formal ball as governor, he wore a gown. His eccentricities continued un-til he was caught embezzling public money and was returned to England.

• The next time you see a shampoo commercial and note how creamy and frothy the lather seems to be, keep this in mind: The model in the adver-tisement probably has either laundry detergent or frothed egg whites on her hair.

• Those who study such things say that 10 years af-ter a hot dog has been dumped in a landfill, the wiener could still be intact.

Anger experts report that anger develops more often within marriages and families than anywhere else. The second most common place for episodes of anger is the work place. Did you need an expert to tell you that? While you may not need experts to tell you when and where you are angry, a little help in understanding how to deal with this powerful emotion can be helpful.

Last week I discussed BLOW OUT and STRIKE OUT as two ways people deal with anger. This week I’ll talk about three more ways people deal with an-ger.

FAKE OUT! The FAKE OUT way of dealing with anger is used by people who think they have to be nice all the time so they try to FAKE OUT oth-ers by repressing their anger and not dealing with it (denial). This is the “peace at any price” way. If you employ this method of anger expression (or lack of it) you will go through life frustrated by your false face and you will never have your own needs met. You will allow people walk all over you for the sake of momentary tranquility.

What to do about it? Take a risk and tell the of-fending person how they are impacting your life.

SNUFF OUT! Here I’m talking about people who on the one hand act as if everything is fine while beneath the surface they seethe with resentment. If someone makes them angry they SNUFF OUT (re-press) their real feelings and relegate them to their quiet, restrained inner self where they churn and burn, agitate and exasperate.

Psychologists call them “passive-aggressive;” they appear passive while they think aggressive. Their aggressiveness, however, is not usually ex-pressed directly. It is expressed subtly and indi-rectly by stubbornness, procrastination, cynicism, or the intentional failure to do requested tasks. For example, someone who uses SNUFF OUT to ex-

press their anger will create unusual delays in get-ting ready for a party they do not want to attend. It is their quiet way (passive) of expressing their anger (aggressive).

This kind of behavior has a negative impact on almost everyone, especially the one practicing it. It will undermine your most valuable relationships and prevent you from taking the action necessary to solve real and present problems. It can impact you both personally and professionally.

What to do about it? Convince yourself that it’s OK to be angry and even more OK to not allow oth-ers to ruin your life with their negative and nasty behavior. If you are being treated unfairly, speak out! Get in the habit of gently expressing your anger so others don’t take advantage of you.

PULL OUT! Some people prefer to avoid an-ger altogether and walk away; so they PULL OUT. They are able to escape from the people or the situ-ation that is causing them grief but they never re-solve the conflict. Are those who PULL OUT not angry? Of course they are, but they won’t admit it. They are probably angry most of the time because their needs are never met. Many turn the anger against themselves and some suffer depression and even serious physical ailments.

What to do about it? Anger avoiders need to learn to get in touch with this very real emotion. They need to learn to be assertive in dealing with others. They must secure a proper view of them-selves and their place in this world; they must cor-rect their mistaken beliefs about anger.

Next week I will discuss the sixth way to express anger – and it is the right way, it is the way that brings healing and wholeness to your relationships. See you next week.Read Part 1 of this series at RonRossToday.com

• On Feb. 8, 1587, after 19 years of imprisonment, Mary Queen of Scots is beheaded in England for her complicity in a plot to murder Queen Eliza-beth I. Her son, King James VI of Scotland, ac-cepted his mother’s execution, and upon Queen Elizabeth’s death in 1603, he became king of Eng-land, Scotland and Ireland.

• On Feb. 5, 1631, Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island and an important American reli-gious leader, arrives in Boston. Williams alarmed the Puritan oligarchy by speaking out against the right of civil authorities to punish religious dis-sension. In 1635, he was banished from the Mas-sachusetts Bay Colony by the General Court.

• On Feb. 6, 1917, a German submarine torpedoes and sinks the passenger steamer California off the

Irish coast. The explosion of the torpedo was so violent that the 470-foot, 9,000-ton steamer sank just nine minutes after the attack.

• On Feb. 9, 1942, the Normandie, regarded by many as the most elegant ocean liner ever built, burns and sinks in New York Harbor during its conversion to an Allied troop transport ship. A welder accidentally set fire to a pile of flammable life preservers, and by morning the ship lay cap-sized in the harbor, a gutted wreck.

• On Feb. 10, 1957, Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the best-selling “Little House” series of children’s novels based on her childhood on the American frontier, dies at age 90 in M a n s fi e l d , Mo. In 1932, Wilder, then in her 60s, published her first novel, “Little House in the Big Woods.”

• On Feb. 7, 1970, Louisiana State University bas-ketball star Pete Maravich scores 69 points in a game against Alabama, setting a Division I record that would stand for 21 years. He died of a heart attack at age 40 in 1988 during a pickup game of basketball in California.

• On Feb. 4, 1983, Karen Carpenter, a singer who long suffered under the burden of the expecta-tions that came with pop stardom, succumbed to heart failure brought on by her long, unpublicized struggle with anorexia. She was just 32 years old.
