Green Haat Background
Project Goal
India, being the global host to the World Environment Day celebration in 2011, hosted the5 day event called Green Haat from June 01 to 05, 2011at Dilli Haat, Opp. INA Market, New Delhi. It was organized by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Govt. of India (GOI) in partnership with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), ACCESS Development Services, United Nations and Desmania Design and facilitated by GEF SGP and Centre for Environment Education (CEE). The event was in line with the Year 2011- theme of UNEP, i.e., Forests: Nature at Your Service. This event shared the evolving consensus on forest, nature, well-being, livelihoods capabilities, opportunities, equity and sustainable actions. The challenge is personal, professional and institutional, to frame practical paradigm for communities of practice for better incomes and livelihoods.
The Green Haat project was set up to emphasize the intrinsic link between the forest ecosystems and livelihoods for the poor; and to showcase the use of Non Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) from the forest by the poor for better incomes. This was partnered through ACCESS, Fair trade and GEF SGP project partners to showcase their links of community livelihoods to biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation measures at local levels. Identify the green Environment champions to take forward the innovative ideas for a more greener economic growth, and responsible actions towards sustainable environment and lifestyles. “Provide space for a better understanding of the diversity and dynamism of people, conditions, institutions and actions”.For exploring the relevance of irreversibility and commitment, especially with the projects, works the communities are doing.

Project ActivitiesProject activities included the Partners and the ACCESS/FAIR TRADE partners vending forest based products, handicrafts, food items and recycled products made by the women self help groups and other community members from the forest and tribal areas. These products were put on sale for the general public to buy organic products during the 5 days of the haat, some of which were amla (murabba), tamarind, honey, anardana, bees wax, lac, jamun and squash bamboo based handicrafts among others.
The handicrafts section also included plates and bowls made out of arecnaut leaves; furniture, baskets and ornaments made out of bamboo and cane; and crafts made out of sandalwood.
The basic aim of Green Haat (A Market Place) was to showcase the products manufactured by the women Self Help Groups (SHGs) in the GEF SGP, Access and Fair Trade supported projects. Build strong bonds for greater outreach through the market links. The range of products were displayed highlighting the links of biodiversity conservation, land degradation, climate change mitigation and adaptation measures with livelihoods and a more business model approach.
In many stalls the local communities themselves gained experience of selling their own produce-first time in New Delhi. This provided mutual trust between all stakeholders, the GEF SGP-Civil Society partners and the local communities. The program was inaugurated by Sh. Jairam Ramesh,
