The Bay of Islands, Waiheke and the CoromandelThe far north is all about the sea, with some of New Zealand’s best sailing

and water sports. The Bay of Islands and the Coromandel offer perfect

retreats, sheltered bush clad bays, beaches and a relaxing small villages.

Waiheke Island with its vineyards, beaches, olive groves and artisans is

only a short commute from downtown Auckland.

The Central PlateauComprising Lake Rotorua, Lake Taupo, Tongariro National Park and

Whakatane, this is a landscape of dramatic geological upheaval; geysers,

hot pools and volcanoes. The region boasts an impressive range of

activities including hiking, lake cruises, golf, fishing, biking, scenic flights,

Maori cultural experiences and natural spa therapies.

Hawkes Bay and North Island East CoastThe Hawkes Bay is a sunny region and well established wine destination

producing some of New Zealand best reds. An area rich in culture, good

food and wine, farmers markets, arts and craft as well as one of the best

golf courses in the country. The neighbouring Gisborne region is more

sparsely populated and still retains a strong Maori culture.

The Cities, Auckland, Wellington, ChristchurchAuckland is a sophisticated city of 1.5 million people, with many beaches

and a passion for sailing. Wellington is the capital, compact, artsy, foodie

and with a fabulous waterfront museum. Christchurch is the hub of the

South Island offering an excellent central access point.

The East Coast, South IslandThe drive down the Kaikoura Coast is abundant with sealife; seals, whales

and dolphins. From Christchurch head out to the lovely harbour village

of Akaroa or travel south towards the delightful small Victorian town of

Oamaru. Dunedin, New Zealand’s early gold-rush capital, gives access to

the rich bird and sealife of the Otago Peninsula.

Nelson and MarlboroughNelson is famous for its golden beaches and mild sunny climate. The

Abel Tasman National Park is one of New Zealand’s most accessible parks

for hiking and kayaking. The region is also known for its artists and artisan

produce. The Marlborough Sounds and Queen Charlotte Track are less

visited but also offer relatively easy and rewarding hiking, kayaking and

mountain biking. Blenheim is New Zealand’s best known wine region.

The West Coast of the South Island and Arthur’s PassThe West Coast has some of New Zealand’s most stunning scenery; vast

native rain forests, wild coastlines, and snowcapped peaks whose glaciers

reach to sea level. The drive down SH6 from Punakaiki to Haast is an

iconic route and a must do for visitors. Allow time for excellent scenic

helicopter trips on both Fox and Franz Josef Glacier and guided hiking

on Fox Glacier. There are also some very special wildlife experiences

along the way. The West Coast can also be accessed via the dramatic

Arthur’s Pass road through the Alps from Christchurch.

Southern Lakes, Wanaka, Queenstown and Central OtagoWanaka and Queenstown both lie alongside magnificent alpine lakes in

the heart of the Southern Alps, adjacent to Mt Aspiring National Park.

Queenstown is one of New Zealand’s premier tourist resorts. Wanaka

is smaller and quieter. The region is a Mecca for the outdoors; hiking,

biking, climbing, water sports and, in winter, skiing. Neighbouring Central

Otago is hot and dry with a reputation for pinot noir.

Fiordland and the Far SouthFiordland is a World Heritage wilderness area, with densely forested

fiords and beautiful lakes. Te Anau is the setting off point for both

Doubtful and Milford Sound as well as some of the countries classic

hikes. The Catlins is a fascinating area for bird and wildlife and in the very

far south is Stewart Island, with some of the best birdlife in the country

and your best chance to see kiwi in the wild.

Special places, special peopleAccommodations in the Green Collection are known for a high standard of hosting, comfortable and luxurious facilities, excellent locations, good food and wine and a small “boutique” atmosphere. You get to meet the hosts, your travel arrangements and personal requests are looked after, you are welcomed as a friend as well as a guest. You can advise ahead particular dietary requirements, bedding arrangements, personal interests, plan for dinner in-house on the night you arrive or request a restaurant booking in town. Because these accommodations are small please respect their cancellation policies as cancellations will affect them more than a large hotel operation.

Our activities are the ones people remember and recommend. They are personally guided, or limited to exclusive or small groups. The special guides are the ones with decades of knowledge of their region, a passion for history, wildlife, hiking or biking, fly fishing or wine and a remarkable ability to communicate that passion to their guests.

New Zealand is a unique place to travel. Beautiful and wild but also relatively safe. You can explore down side lanes and walk along remote beaches, turn up late in a small town and get friendly advice. You might be learning to drive on the “wrong“ side of the road, but there is hardly any traffic! The standard of accommodation, food, wine and adventure is high.

Challenge yourselfIncluded in our Collection are some highly recommended multiday trips. These are adventures which may challenge you more and take you a little out of your comfort zone, but you will be rewarded for it. All the multiday trips in the Collection are superbly guided, and offer comfortable accommodation at the end of a day hiking, biking, kayaking or cruising on a remote Southern Fiord. They get you out into densely forested wilderness, exploring gorgeous coastlines or remote river valleys. Look for the Humpridge and Hollyford Tracks, The Queen Charlotte Track, Fiordland Expeditions and Real Journeys overnight cruises and multi-day kayaking trips in Doubtful and Dusky Sounds.

Have you ever wanted to jump on a Harley Davidson and disappear down a spectacular coastal highway into the sunset? Bularangi Motorbikes arrange multiday individual and group tours throughout New Zealand. Helicopters and small planes are a New Zealand speciality and especially suit our remote and mountainous terrain. Take a flight to land on a glacier, fly over a volcano, explore Fiordland’s lesser known valleys.

Travel like a local All our destinations and accommodations are in regions which offer a wide range of unguided activities you can just decide to “do on the day”, magnificent day walks in National Parks, fun bike rides through vineyards, alongside lakes or through forest trails, a round of golf or visits to local farmers markets and artisans. But what you get from booking a selection of guided activities is not only access to some amazing places but interaction with some exceptional local people and guides and a glimpse into a local community.

Indulge your passionHiking, kayaking, sailing, fishing, biking, golf, wildlife, it’s all here and New Zealand has some of the best to offer. Our sailing and watersports are world class and our beaches are beautiful and undeveloped. Our crystal clear rivers are renowned for superb fly fishing. The hiking opportunities range from relaxed day walks to treks in magnificent National Parks. You can heli-bike, mountain bike, bike river or lakeside, road bike or cruise through the vineyards. We also have some of the best food and wine in the world and our producers are still small and local to each region.

New Zealand’s natural landscape, raw and dynamic, with rivers, lakes and mountains of epic proportions, is still wild, very unpopulated and a refuge for a rich variety of marine and birdlife. Places such as Stewart Island offer a glimpse into a world that once had no mammals but only birds.

The Wellington harbour front has been opened up for visitors with walkways, restaurants, museums and art galleries, and you can happily spend half a day strolling the waterfront and visiting the attractions here. Te Papa, our national history and heritage museum, is an absolute must for anyone visiting Wellington. • Explore our coastline; from Nelson’s sheltered sandy beaches to the dramatic

coastlines of the West Coast, the sealife rich East Coast and the remote hardly visited

but beautiful beaches of the far south and Stewart Island, stenciled with kiwi prints.

• Experience the best country in the world for hiking and day walks; up a glaciated

mountain, beside a lake, along beech forested wild rivers or beside idyllic beaches

and bays. For the ultimate wilderness experience take a multiday hike such as the

Queen Charlotte, Hollyford or Humpridge tracks or the private Kaikoura Wilderness

Walk. The Southern Lakes region is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise.

• Stand in awe of the youngest country on earth and the last to be populated by

people. Our alps, fiords and forests only emerged from the sea around 1 million years

ago. Our wildlife was originally limited to birds, sealife, insects and reptiles.

• Small planes and helicopters are part of New Zealand’s culture and make access to

remote country possible. The flight is often as exhilarating as the destination.

• Experience the art of fly fishing for trout on crystal clear rivers.

• Savour wine from boutique vineyards and handcrafted food at local farmer’s markets,

enjoy food prepared fresh from a lodge farm or garden.

• Explore our history, well preserved in small towns such as Oamaru and Dunedin.

West Coast Glaciers, South Island

Some 140 glaciers flow from the Southern Alps, however only two, Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, extend through the rainforest to close to sea level. Few sights equal the spectacle of these powerful rivers of ice grinding down through temperate rainforest. The glaciers are dynamic on a grand scale, with the ice moving at a rate about ten times of most other glaciers. In another 50 years (or decades less) you may not be able to see or hike on glaciers such as these. They are a perfect place to experience the kind of forces that shape our world. Guiding companies offer a range of options to hike to the foot of the glacier, fly over the glacier and surrounding alps or land high on the glacier and hike amidst a world of pristine ice sculptures, with magnificent views of the West Coast.

New Zealand WineNew Zealand produces some of the best wines in the world, dry

riesling, chardonnay, cabernet, syrah and merlot, but it is particularly

famous for its sauvignon blanc and pinot noir. The key wine regions are

Hawkes Bay and the Wairarapa in the North Island and Marlborough

and Central Otago in the South Island. Wineries are boutique, generally

privately owned and often provide excellent food and interesting

architecture as well as wine tastings.

Fiordland is renowned for its vast 1.2 million hectares of national heritage park, the splendour of Milford and Doubtful Sounds and its great hikes (the Hollyford, Milford, Routeburn, Kepler and Humpridge tracks). There are many activity options here; cruising the Sounds, kayaking, day and multi-day hikes, exploring glow worm caves or enjoying wilderness fly fishing and helicopter flights to remote coastlines. The forest is dense and magnificent cool climate rain forest.

The Hollyford Track is a 2 night/3 day 37 km trek along the Hollyford Valley (near Milford Sound) to the sea at the magnificent and remote Martin’s Bay. The rainforest is dense, the guiding is superb and the private accommodation very comfortable. After a night at Martin’s Bay Lodge you fly out back to “civilisation”. Transport options are available from either Te Anau or Queenstown.

The Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track is a 3 night/3 day loop walk that takes hikers along the south coast of New Zealand, up to the sub-alpine zone of the Hump Ridge, and past historic sites in the heart of native forest. The two backcountry lodges are in superb locations, one mountain-top and one coastal. Good fitness essential, although helicopter access assists with some of the steeper sections of this track.

Multi-Day Hikes There is something very special about being completely “away from it all”, no roads, no urban noise, just you and the wild. One of the best things you can do in New Zealand is go for a day walk or hike, and multi-day hikes are the ultimate challenge. The hikes we have included, the Hollyford and Humpridge in Fiordland and the Queen Charlotte Track at the top of the South Island, ensure that you are well looked after, with little to worry about other than a reasonable level of fitness and an appreciation of magnificent scenery. Accommodation ranges from luxury (at Shearwater Lodge and on the Queen Charlotte Track) to very comfortable (on the Hollyford and Humpridge Tracks). Meals are catered for and are a great opportunity to share stories with fellow “trampers” - while listening for the night calls of kiwi.

Stewart Island Everyone falls in love with Stewart

Island; its peace, smallness,

friendliness, remotely beautiful beaches

and unrivalled birdlife. The tiny

population is mainly within the fishing

village of Oban; 85 percent of Stewart

Island is National Park. While far to the

south and with a reputation for stormy

weather, the climate is actually milder

than some parts of the mainland. The

island is large with long multi-day

hiking tracks, a variety of terrain and

forest, wetland, high rocky heathlands

and tortuous coastline with several

deep bays and harbours. Stewart

Island is all about marine and birdlife,

amazing fishing, unusual tastes such as

Muttonbird, and far and away your best

chance to see kiwi in the wild.

New Zealand WildlifeNew Zealand’s natural landscape, raw and dynamic, with rivers, lakes, forests and mountains of epic proportions, is still wild, very unpopulated and a refuge for a rich variety of marine and birdlife. Special places to visit include Kapiti Island (Wellington), Okarito and Lake Moeraki on the west coast and Kaikoura on the east coast of the South Island. Further south are the Otago Peninsula, Catlins and Stewart Island.

New Zealand Itineraries

New Zealand is not a large land mass but it does have a very varied terrain and it takes time to get around. Don’t underestimate driving distances in planning your holiday. It is worthwhile making good use of internal flights to allow you more time in each of your destinations of choice. Most New Zealand towns have good connecting airports with a rental car hire. We recommend Budget Car Rental as they service many smaller centres and provide flexible one-way rentals. The Interislander car and passenger ferry offers an essential service across Cook Strait between the North and South Islands. It is also the most scenic way you can arrive in the South Island, cruising slowly through the Marlborough Sounds. Summer in New Zealand extends from November to March, with December, January and February being the hottest months. April is autumnal. The ski and winter season generally lasts from July through to the end of September. September and October are spring months. The far north of the country is more temperate, but the three main sunshine areas in the country are Hawkes Bay, Nelson and Central Otago. Our Green Journeys are itineraries taking in the best of New Zealand scenery and destinations, accommodations and activities. We have organised them according to the following main features or interests:
