GREEN MANUFACTURING

• Green manufacturing is a method for manufacturing that minimizes waste and pollution. These goals are often achieved through product and process design.• It is about implementing any kind of substitution in the

manufacturing process which leads to a reduction in energy consumption, waste and pollution.• Green Manufacturing follows “ Manufacturing for reuse” &

“Design for disassembly”

3

Need for green manufacturing

• Environmental protection• Environmental care to reduce - depletion of ozone layer -running out of natural resources - loss of trees & forests• Reduce the trash• Cost saving

Page 4: Green Manufacturing

4

Goals of green manufacturing

• To support future generations by attaining sustainability.• Conserve natural resource.• To lower down the extensive amounts of trash.• To make efficient products.

Case study• Cleaner production in the automotive

industry Ford Australia Private Ltd.• Green Productivity Implementation at

Rama Phosphates Ltd. (oil division), Indore, India.

• Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., India

11

Ford australia private ltd. Ford Australia Ltd is one of three Australian

manufacturers of passenger vehicles and is a recognized Australian icon. This project focused on the cleaning of the skids used for transporting car bodies through the paint shop at the Broadmeadows plant.

• Action: The hot caustic cleaning process was replaced by an eco friendly high pressure water jet cleaning.

• Findings: Stimulation for the process change was demonstration of eco friendly production process that resulted in a consequent cost saving.

12

Rama phosphates ltd. (oil division) In view of low productivity and environmental pollution

in edible soy oil section, urgent steps were required to ensure its sustainability and growth in an era of economic liberalization.

• Action: Green productivity was adopted. The object of GP is to minimize waste and to convert wastes into asset; hence improving productivity and environmental performance.

• Findings: The objective was a sustainable economic growth based on green productivity that was achieved by adopting green productivity

13

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited• Actions: A. Water Conservation Measures Reuse of wastewater generated from filter press operation for other

miscellaneous uses and recirculation of cooling water at jiggering and kiln areas.

B. Energy Conservation Measures Insulation of ducts & use of high efficiency motors. C. Air pollution control Reconditioning of Dust Extraction System of Shot blasting machine at

foundry • Findings: Triple objectives of Resource conservation, Pollution

reduction and cost saving were pursued.

conclusion• Green manufacturing is the elimination of waste

through the production process• Green manufacturing promotes innovative design.• Processes such as zero inventory and zero emission

should be exercised by all companies• Companies can adopt methods which are eco-

friendly.
