Description:
Going Green: Going Green via Distance Learning Sponsored & Hosted by: Wimba, Inc. (http://www.wimba.com/) This webinar will explore a broad range of issues related to going green via distance learning. With gasoline prices still uncomfortably high, more and more students and business professionals are looking to Distance Learning to continue their education. According to the New York Times, colleges from Massachusetts and Florida to Texas and Oregon have reported significant increases in online enrollment. And with no relief in sight for fuel prices, this increase is likely to continue. Specific areas of interest may focus on how organizations are using distance learning to lead much greener and more productive environment globally.

Benefits of going green

Future potential:

Forward-thinking companies gain competitive advantage. Current situation:

Mainstream Institutions focus on distance learning and cost savings

Past:

Niche focus

Technology has potential to bridge

this gap

Who is the Most Green?

DON’T ASSUME YOU KNOW

Which country? – China topped all countries

• 67% prefer to purchase from a green company• 84% want to work for one

Which demographic?

– Green attitudes cut across gender, age, region, socio-economic groups

– Customers and workers are anywhere and everywhere

Reducing Emissions by Reducing Travel

Per mile, air travel is about three times more harmful to the environment than road travel.

25% of air polluting emissions are caused by motor vehicles on the roads

Page 9: Green NDLW Power Point Template Wimba Friday

The Remote Teacher

Concerns– Teacher & Student relationship – Federal agencies encourage 25% of workers to telecommute, but only a small percentage do.

“Off-site” Doesn’t Have to Mean “Out of Sight” – Visual telecommuting programs build trust– Maintain “hallway” interaction

Green Meter: Distance Learning• Green Meter tracks the

environmental impact of distance learning programs.

• Global Knowledge prevents more than

4.4 million points of CO2 /month.• 20 pounds of CO2 equals burning

one gallon of gasoline.• Global Knowledge saves more than

200,000 gallons of gas per month.

Page 18: Green NDLW Power Point Template Wimba Friday

Increasing Green Demand• 35 percent of organizational travel

departments now require carbon emissions information be provided, up from 20 percent in 2006,

• 36 percent reported reduced travel as a measure for supporting sustainability, up from 23 percent a year earlier.

• Distance Learning supports both requirements

10 Green Things To Do Today• 1. Turn off equipment when it's

not being used. This can reduce the energy used by 25 percent; turning off the computers at the end of the day can save an additional 50 percent.

• 2. Encourage online distance learning and online communications cut down on travel and emissions. Reading email messages onscreen should be favored over printing the messages out.

• 3. Reduce waste by using a fax-modem and by using a fax cover sheet only when necessary. Fax-modems allow documents to be sent directly from a computer, without requiring a printed hard copy. Even better consider switching to an online digital fax service like http://www.faxdigits.com that sends fax messages to your email allowing you to read them digitally without printing out at all.

Page 20: Green NDLW Power Point Template Wimba Friday

10 Green Things To Do Today• 4. Produce double-sided

documents whenever possible.

• 5. Do not waste water; always close water taps tightly after use. (One drop wasted per second wastes nearly 2,700 gallons of water per year.)

• 6. Install displacement dams Placing one or two plastic containers filled with stones [not bricks] in the toilet's reservoir will displace about 1 gallon of water per use- a huge reduction of water use over the course of a year.

Page 21: Green NDLW Power Point Template Wimba Friday

10 Green Things To Do Today• 7. Use only maximum

available recycled content paper.

• 8. Choose suppliers who take back packaging for reuse.

• 9. Buy Local. The further your supplies or service providers have to travel, the more energy will be used to get them to you.

• 10. Buy Used and Refurbished Office furniture/equipment.

“To reduce our air miles, we have made a substantial investment in phone and video conferencing and now have new or upgraded facilities in all of our major offices. Last year we were able to avoid 1.1 million miles of travel through use of telesuite facilities, thereby avoiding the emission of 198,000kg of CO2.”

- PWC Corporate Statement

“The initial investment is easily justifiable, ultimately increasing productivity. It’s not only protecting the environment, but is common sense for businesses to adopt.” - David Rowe, CEO, Easynet
