Add background to timeline (project)
Then add green screen footage
Drop on top of background – choose Greenscreen from options
Crop green screen footage
Use colour grading (choose Video in Inspector – double click on clip) to make the green as even as possible
Using green screen shapes to break up the screen
Create your pattern in Photoshop –first make a freeze frame (right click on clip – make a freeze frame)
Right click on clip and open in finder then choose Photoshop to open the freeze frame.
This gives you a template.
In Photoshop create a new layer and hide or delete the freeze frame clip.
Create your shapes using a bright green (refer to iMovie for exact tone)
If you want to use several layers of green screen footage (different colours or sizes or completely
different footage) create layers in Photoshop and then hide them for each iMovie green screen layer before
saving as a PNG
There is an iMovie bug which means that your shapes will have a dark, seriated
edge when added. There doesn’t seem to be a way around this so… use the
effect.
Add your own black borders to the shapes.
Make the shapes rough around the edges – add Gaussian blur to try different effects
For each layer, add your green shapes.
‘Share’ the movie (save the clip as a movie) and then import the movie in as green
screen footage (as before) dropped on top of whatever additional footage you want to
be visible.
Export as a movie again and import as much as you need to.
WHAT’S HAPPENING?
YOU CAN ESTABLISH THE BASIC CONTEXT FOR YOUR SHOT IN A FEW
SECONDS.
ONCE ESTABLISHED, THE INFORMATION CAN BECOME BORING WITHOUT SOME MOVEMENT, EITHER LITERALLY OR IN THE NARRATIVE.
