Goyer, CCAI Found Conference and Trade Show for Industrial Finishing

Goyer Management International Inc. (GMI), in cooper- ation with the Chemical Coaters Association International (CCAI), announced the launching of a new conference and trade show to serve the industrial finishing market.

The FINISH '07 International Trade Fair and Conference will debut Sept. 17 to 20, 2007, at the Indiana Convention Center (Indianapolis).

Anne Goyer, president of GMI, stated, "many of the companies that have typically exhibited at finishing industry events in the past have expressed an interest in continuing to offer a trade show and educational con- ference that encompasses all finishing technologies. With the decision recently conveyed to us that the Coating show would not be held in 2007, we believed the demand from both exhibitors and attendees is strong enough to justify the launch of this new event."

'Green' Technology Created to Replace Chrome Plat ing

Workplace-related cancers associated with chrome elec- troplating could be eliminated by new technology, thanks to innovative research by scientists at Sheffield Hallam University's Centre for Corrosion Technology. Researchers have developed a safer, more versatile, cheaper, and environmentally friendly alternative to chrome electroplating, according to a published report.

Chromium is used to protect metal from corrosion, and is found on vintage cars and motorcycles, piston engines, as well as domestic fixtures and fittings. While this is said to be an effective protection method, the tradit ional hard-chrome process uses electroplating solutions that are carcinogenic, M2 Presswire reports.

Professor Robert Akid, head of the Structural Materials & Integrity Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam, is reportedly leading a team developing "sol- gel" surface t reatment alternatives. This technology allows a wide range of metals to be coated with ceram- ic-like material.

Sol-gels work by dipping or spraying the material to be protected with mixed organic/inorganic solu- tion, the publ ished report s tated. The coating process is said to be faster and more flexible than tha t of chrome electroplat ing and, as a result ,

6 w w w . m e t a l f i n i s h i n g . c o m

retains a good shelf life. Akid believes a safer alter- native to toxic chrome plating is much-needed, as workers can be exposed to dangerous levels of toxins and cancer-causing chromium compounds.

"Environmental legislation is now impacting on the use of toxic chrome plat ing and indus t ry is actively seeking alternative processes," Akid stated in the article. "The sol-gel route offers a number of advantages in that the coating can be formulated to give highly corrosion resistant, non-toxic ceramic- based coatings which do not easily release their con- sti tuent ions into the environment.

"When scaled up, the new technology is also cheap- er than chrome electroplating," Akid added. "An additional benefit is that the absence of chrome will make recycling of products easier."

The coatings produced so far have performed extreme- ly well in early tests, resisting corrosion and being on par with the '%enchmark" chromate and chromic acid anodized processes, according to M2 Presswire.

Obituary: Tom Burke, Consultant

My good friend and colleague, Tom Burke, a long-time paint and coatings consul tant , died June 23 in San Jose, Calif., of respiratory failure.

Tom began his career in the coat- . . . . . ings industry at C.W. Haynes

Laboratories in Chicopee Falls, Mass., in 1949. He then worked in

the sales department for Lilly Industrial Coatings in Gardener, Mass. He moved to Pennsylvania, where he worked as technical director for Chemcoat Inc.

I first met Tom in 1981 at the SME Finishing Show in Detroit and asked him if he would like to work as a coat- ings guru for FMC Corp. in Santa Clara, Calif. He accept- ed the position and headed to California. In 1984, at age 50, he took over as corporate paints and coatings tech- nology manager. At age 66, Tom finally decided to retire. But you can't keep an old paint dog down for long, and he returned to work on a part-time basis.

Throughout our association, Tom was a mentor to me and taught me so much of what I know about paint manufacturing. The two of us had a wonderful friend- ship and, until the very end, spent many hours dis- cussing paint-related issues.

On a professional note, Tom was a certified manufac- turing engineer and served on the board of directors as a technical advisor for the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. Tom also served as a question and answer columnist under "Shop Problems" for Metal Finishing.

Introducing COLDIP TM Tri-V Black 50

Trivalent Black Conversion Coating for Zinc

Zinc platers are talking about the optimum color, gloss and corrosion-resistance of COLDIP TM

Tri-V Black 50 trivalent conversion coating. The secret to this black beauty is a "slow

growth" chromate film builder that maximizes salt spray hours while enhancing deep color and gloss. COLDIW Tri-V Black 50 will provide 48 to 72 hours to white corrosion for barrel-plated parts, and 72 to 120 hours to white corrosion for rack-plated parts, when top-coated with Zinc- Chro-SHIELDT?

The special rejuvenator additive in COLDIW Tri-V Black 50 significantly reduces use of the Tri-V Black activator and base, saving money while maintaining consistency and uniformity of color.

Try COLDIW Tri-V Black 50 on your zinc parts. You'll never look back. Contact Columbia Chemical, 3097 Interstate Parkway, Brunswick, Ohio 44212, 330/225-3200, fax: 330/225-1499, www.colurabiachemical.com.
