THIV LANDSCAPE NEWS AND REPORT Congratulations are due to the Felix Landscaping crews. The company just won first place as the the Readers’ Pick in the Green Valley News and Sun for Best Landscaping Company in Green Valley. Way to go! Congrats from Foothills THIV.

CLARIFICATION OF YARD WASTE GUIDELINES Most of us do a pretty good job of maintaining our sites, but it is often necessary to pull weeds or trim bushes and remove dead cacti. There are two types of yard waste generated by this activity. Some is picked up in normal trash collection and the rest is collected by Felix Landscaping.

Private property yard waste includes items removed from your front yard and your patio to your back wall. All of this waste can be put into your garbage pickup container. Do not take it to the pickup areas located on the map in your directory. Any cacti or other things with thorns or spines must be placed in boxes and taped shut to protect the people who collect the trash. NOTE: If you hire landscapers to do work on your property, let them know they are required to haul away their cuttings.

Common ground yard waste includes anything located outside your front yard and patio area. We encourage you to help reduce costs by also maintaining some of the area beyond your rear wall. Common Ground Yard Waste should be placed in one of the 17 collection spots indicated in the center pages of your directory and is picked up by Felix Landscaping on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month, unless a holiday lands on either of those days or inclement weather precludes such an arrangement. The November newsletter incorrectly stated that pickups would be the first and third Mondays. You may have noticed that much needed and appreciated extra cutting and trimming is being done by some superior volunteer angels well-known to and with permission of the THIV Landscape Committee. If you would like to be an angel, too, contact Marilyn Kern, 520-399-0440 or 520-429-2101.

January Potluck Be sure to mark your calendars for our Thursday, January 23rd Potluck. Think tropical and bring a dish for a luau! This will be a very fun event with live musical entertainment that will have you laughing and tapping your flip flops. Watch for the flyer advertising this event coming to you by the end of the year.

Have you ever wondered what’s on the other side of the holes you see in the saguaros? A saguaro boot is the hard shell that a saguaro cactus creates to protect the wound created by a bird's nesting hole.[The bird pecks through the cactus skin, then excavates downward to hollow out a space for its nest.[2] When the saguaro dies, its soft flesh rots, but its woody infrastructure lasts much longer. So does the hollowed-out callus whose roughly boot-like shape gives it the name of "saguaro boot.

Recent Visitor to 561 Rueda Sherrill Herter sent this photo of a young bobcat who paid her a visit recently. Sometimes young bobcats are mistaken for ocelots, but the pointed ears and fewer, less bold spotting are things to look for. Ocelots are very rare and not expected to be found in Green Valley.
