Science-based targets Currently, most company targets are not

aggressive enough to account for their share of

global GHG emissions reductions.

Science-based targets aim to keep the planet

within the widely-accepted global goal of a 2°C

temperature increase from pre-industrial levels.

Demonstrating climate leadership

Science-based targets allow companies to

reduce their fair share of emissions and set

their targets in line with climate science.

Companies can demonstrate to policy

makers the scale of ambition in industry and

positively influence international climate policy.

Demonstrating climate leadership Science-based goal setting can spur ambition and generate the innovations needed to

transition to a low-carbon, sustainable economy.

This type of innovation can redefine companies’ bottom lines by creating new business

models and sources of value, and by disrupting currently unsustainable economic systems.

Setting these targets in advance of carbon-related regulations will allow companies to be

better positioned to respond to regulatory and policy changes.

Companies can identify risks and take advantage of opportunities relating to climate

change.

Company Intensity

Company targets are expected to converge or

compress with their sector by 2050.

Their intensity pathway is calculated based on:

• share of the activity

• base year intensity

Scopes 1 and 2 are covered, general guidance is

provided for scope 3.

Companies can set absolute or intensity targets.

Most emissions are covered by sectors in the SDA.

Compression of carbon intensities within a sector

Science-based targets at CDP

Through its Road to Paris campaign, CDP is asking that

companies set their emissions reductions goals in line with

a science-based target.

Page 16

How do companies sign up? To indicate your preparedness to endorse these commitments, please contact the CDP

Road to Paris 2015 team by email at [email protected].

A team member will contact you to discuss your endorsement.

Changes to CDP Climate Change Questionnaire

CDP will incentivize companies to

implement science-based targets in 2016.

CDP will look at what changes need to

be made (if any) to track companies' CO2

targets and their progress.
