Porter grew up in Greensboro, NC, looked after by his grandmother and aunt.

He later moved to Houston, Texas, where he worked as a banker. He was jailed in 1898 for embezzlement (stealing money from a

company). While in prison, he wrote and sold short stories to make money to support his daughter, Margaret.

Calling himself “O. Henry,” Porter became a successful author, but died in 1910 of an illness caused by alcoholism. He was only 47 years old.

“The magi … were wise men--wonderfully wise men--who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones … ”

But in a last word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest.

from the story by O. Henry
