Dear Parents, Students and Staff
Another successful year is coming to an end. In true Greenside fashion, some of the most impressive successes have been saved for last to top off 2017. Our World Robotics Champs have arrived back from Costa Rica with outstanding results and extraordinary stories; our sports season for Term 4 has drawn to a close, and students and teachers alike are getting ready for the festive season ahead.
SCHOOL NEWS FROM TERM 4
- Heywood Broun (American journalist)
Greenside Awarded as a Top Feeder School to Wits University for 2017We are proud to announce that Greenside High has been awarded Top Gauteng Feeder School to Wits University yet again. Needless to say, this puts us in the national ranking for providing Wits University with new scholars to enrol. It is an achievement for which we thank our entire Greenside community. The tireless efforts put in by our students; the often unrecognised hours our educators devote, and the support from parents and the wider community have made it possible to yet again call ourselves a prominent institution with a solid foundation.Top Feeder Certificates are awarded to schools both in Gauteng and other provinces based on either of the two following criteria (based on first year undergraduate enrolment statistics for 2017):· Total number of enrolments (i.e. the highest number).· Enrolments vs. Matric Class Size (i.e. the % conversion).Greenside was one the schools that qualified in the first category.Community through individuality has never rung more true at Greenside High. It is a belief we hold in high regard, and hope that our students carry it with them through their journeys at Wits University, and further.

WORLD ROBOTICS OLYMPIAD 2017RESULTS ARE IN This year we entered seven teams into The World Robotics Olympiad held on Saturday, 9 September 2017, at Tshwane University of Technology. Learners had to design, build and programme robots that addressed this specific theme. Greenside once again dominated the Open category. Two of our teams were selected to aid the South African team in representing our country at the 14th WRO held in Costa Rica during November of 2017. They were:Team TBC (Philip Ginster, Grade 11; Tinotenda Mudzingwa, Grade 11; and Layla Mayet, Grade 10) who chose the “Climate Action” goal within the UN sustainability goals and

were to take their animatronic puppet, Enviro-Boy, designed to raise awareness of the effects of Climate change, along to the WRO. Team Masterminds (Stevens Ndawonde, Grade 11; Marcel Swart, Grade 10; and Jordan Williams, Grade 10) chose to work with the UN Goal number 15, “Life on Land”. Their project aimed to conserve and increase the supply of endangered indigenous medicinal plants. Team Masterminds and Team TCB, in the Senior High Division, attended the world tournament in San José, Costa Rica, 10-12 November 2017. The two team captains were the two learners who went to India in 2015, who shared their knowledge and skills with the other learners. Being the fourth consecutive year that Greenside has taken part in the WRO, we are proud to announce the results for the 14th WRO as follows:Results - Open Senior XIV World Robot Olympiad Team Masterminds placed 12th out of over 80 other teams in their category. Team TBC placed 16th out of over 80 other teams in their category. We cannot express how incredibly proud we are of the learners who participated during the entire
process, from January to date. We look forward to what our teams will come up with next year! A special mention of appreciation must also be made to Dr Anne Ginster, without whom none of this could have happened. Well done, Greensiders!
