Christian Ethics – The Use of Tobacco

It has been said that alcoholism is the number one drug problem in our nation, but that smoking is the num-ber one killer. Estimates of the number of Americans that die each year due either directly or indirectly to smoking is about 320,000. Smoking is not only responsible to such a large number of deaths but it contributes to the ill health of many others. In America there are about 6 million people with asthma, 6.5 million with chronic bronchitis, 1.3 million with emphysema, 294,000 with tuberculosis and another 1.3 million with other chronic lung diseases. In addition to the dangers of smoking, there have been more and more young people who have turned to “smokeless” tobacco such as chewing tobacco and snuff. These types of to-bacco are the cause of rising cases of oral cancer (cancer of the lips, tongues and tonsils). In 1974 Americans smoked approximately 30 billion packs of cigarettes. In 1964 53 % of the men and 32 % of the women 21 years old or older smoked cigarettes. By the mid 1980’s that number was down to 33% of the men and 28% of the women. When smoking was first intro-duced and for a long time after that, it was not known that smoking was harmful. But as medical science has gath-ered more and more evidence of the harm of smoking, more and more Americans have quit. Cigarette smoke contains thousands of chemical substances, many of which have been linked to the devel-opment of diseases. The chemicals are divided into two groups – gases and particles. The gases include hydro-gen cyanide, nitrogen oxides and especially carbon mon-oxide. “Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that readily combines with hemoglobin, a substance in the blood that transports oxygen to bodily tissues. Carbon monoxide in the blood prevents oxygen from reaching the brain and the heart and other muscles. Continual exposure to the high levels of carbon monoxide associated with cigarette smoking is believed to lead to heart disease” (World Book Encyclopedia, “Smoking,” pp 520-521). Particles often referred to as tar include many health damaging substances, of which nicotine is the most hazardous. “About 60 milligrams (1/500 of an ounce) is enough to kill a person if taken all at once. The average cigarette will contain about 1/30,000 ounce of nicotine. The body prevents the accumulation of fatal doses by quickly breaking down the nicotine from each cigarette. However, nicotine raises the blood pressure, increases the heart rate, and contracts blood vessels near the skin…During smoking the larger particles get deposited on the mucous lining of the lungs and the larger airways that lead into the lungs. Over time, the large particulates and certain gases in the cigarette smoke scar the lungs and damage the cilia, thousands of little hair that line the airway…As a result, a smoker’s chance of developing bronchitis and influenza rises. Deposits of small particu-lates in the smaller airways of the lungs can lead to a lung disease called emphysema.”

Belize Missions

Our Nightly Revival Meetings which was held from

March 29 to April 1, was a huge success. To God be all

the glory! The meetings were well attended. The singing

was enthusiastic. The prayers were humbly and lovely

offered. The messages were powerful and Biblical. I am

thrilled to report that twenty precious souls were added to

the body of Christ. One Brother and two Sisters have

reconciled their lives to the Lord.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all my

faithful Brothers and Sisters from the Corozal and Liber-

tad congregation who:

1. Examined his/her heart and prepared for the meeting

2. Prayed for the success of the meeting

3. Invited and brought others to the meeting

4. Assisted in restoring the unfaithful

5. Attended every service of the meeting

You all did a fantastic job! Hats off to you! Thanks

again!

Our deepest and heartfelt thanks are extended to the Roe-

buck Parkway congregation for sending such a fine and

hardworking group to help us with the meeting. They

have done a wonderful job. They have impacted more

lives than they will ever know. They have imprinted last-

ing memories which have encouraged and inspired many

to serve the Lord and to do His will. Thank you all for the

great love that you have for the Belizean people.

Through the grace of God and His blessing, the Corozal

and Libertad congregation will continue to be bright shin-

ing light in our community!
