“Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray.
Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise” (James 5:13, NIV).
In this holy time and space, we express prayers for the hurting as well as songs of joy. Welcome!

FELLOWSHIP TIME
Everyone is invited to enjoy the fellowship and some light refreshments in the cafeteria immediately
following the 8:00 a.m. Sunday service. Many thanks to Brianne Hubner, Amy Schoon, and Stephanie
Fahler for providing the baked goods today.
SUNDAY ADULT CLASSES (9:15-10:15 A.M.)
A MAN NAMED MARTIN–PART 3: THE MOVEMENT led by Pastor Heckert in the cafeteria
(P212). From Luther’s 95 Theses in 1517 to the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, God was at work in the
Reformation. Fierce debates over Scripture, church doctrine, and late medieval church practice led to
theological positions articulating salvation as God’s grace in action, with man being left to add nothing
to his own salvation. In A Man Named Martin–Part 3, viewers will see how the Reformation
transformed European society and, eventually, left a profound impression around the globe. Join us
for the video and discussion in the cafeteria during the adult instruction and fellowship hour!
ADULT INFORMATION (NEW MEMBER) CLASS led by Pastor French in the fellowship hall
(F202). This class is for all those who would like to join our congregation or just learn more about the
teachings of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. For members, this is also a great opportunity to
brush up on your fundamentals of the faith and to meet some potential new members. Everyone is
welcome!
A DEEPER LOOK moderated by Grace Gillespie in Room P202 (green classroom). This group
discusses the Bible lessons (pericopes) which are read in church each Sunday. You are invited every
Sunday, but will not be lost if you miss a Sunday. This is a casual class with lots of interaction. We
pray for each other and care for each other. Join us today and every Sunday.
SUNDAY SCHOOL (9:15-10:15 A.M.)
Every week, we will meet in the Orange Classroom for the opening of Sunday school. The classes will
then proceed to the following rooms:
2 Yr. Olds - Preschool: Yellow Classroom
K - 2nd Grade (Lower Elementary): Orange Classroom
3rd - 5th Grade (Upper Elementary): Red Classroom
6th - 8th Grade: Church Office Conference Room
High School: Church Office Work Room
What are the 2 year olds - 5th graders learning about? Starting with Genesis, we will work through
the Bible in three years through major Bible stories from the Old Testament, the Gospels, and Acts.
Students will learn and grow in faith alongside their peers as they explore the Bible, draw connections
to the Small Catechism, and learn the traditions of the Lutheran Church. If you have questions about
the Sunday school program, contact Rebecca Rowan at [email protected] or (423) 322-7326.
What are the 6th - 8th graders learning about? Led by Bill & Karin Crum each week, the class will
aid students in their preparation for confirmation. The class has allowed for incredible discussion and
participation by all who attend. The students WILL be in Scripture and the Catechism at EVERY
meeting. The program we are using can be found at https://steadfastlutherans.org/parish/lambsatpasture.
Ask to see your child’s work after class!
WEEKDAY BIBLE STUDIES
COFFEE CLUB led by Pastor French on Thursdays 7:00-7:45 a.m. in the church conference room.
WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY - “PARABLES” led by Barbara Kirkpatrick on Mondays 7:00-9:00 p.m.
in the church conference room. Everybody likes stories, but not everybody can tell a good one. Good
stories can both amuse and instruct. In fact, they often instruct precisely because their hearers enjoy
them. People listen better to what interests them than to what bores them. It is often the case, therefore,
that good teachers are also good storytellers, and our Lord Jesus Christ is the best of both.
WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY - “LUKE, PART 1” led by Jan Harris on Tuesdays 9:30-11:00 a.m. in
the fellowship hall (F202). Blessings for the reader, as you study Luke’s carefully researched account
of Jesus’s life. Consider yourself on a journey with Luke to learn more about Jesus of Nazareth, whose
body, crucified for the forgiveness of our sins, becomes the temple of the living God.
THURSDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY led by Pastor Heckert on Thursdays 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the
conference room. We are (a bit belatedly) back in action! Join us every Thursday night as we resume our
study of Genesis! Come for the discussion and strengthening of your faith, but stay for the off-topic
jocularity and Hebrew vocabulary lessons! See you there!
MEN’S BIBLE BREAKFAST led by Doug Schroeder on Fridays 6:00-7:00 a.m. at the Downtowner
Restaurant. You can come for coffee or breakfast at 6:00 a.m. or just for the Bible study on the Scripture
lessons for the coming Sunday which begins about 6:25 a.m.
TV & RADIO MINISTRIES
ISSUES, ETC.: Issues, Etc. is a radio talk show and podcast hosted by LCMS Pastor Todd Wilken and

LUTHERAN PUBLIC RADIO: Music of the Church anytime at www.LutheranPublicRadio.org.
THE LUTHERAN HOUR: “Cut Off-for-Us” by Dr. Lawrence R. Rast Jr. on September 30. Sin is
serious because it cuts us off from God. Guest speaker Dr. Rast says Jesus was cut off from God, in our
place (Mark 9:38-50). The Lutheran Hour is heard every week in our listening area at 7:00 a.m. on
station 720 AM, at 7:30 a.m. on 97.3 FM, at 9:04 a.m. on 107.7 FM, or at 10:00 a.m. on 97.3 FM.
WORSHIP ANEW: This 30 minute Lutheran television worship service includes the readings for the
day, prayers, and a Lutheran pastor delivering a message that is one-on-one to the viewer. Worship Anew
is aired each Sunday at 10:00 a.m. on WHMB-TV40. Visit www.WorshipAnew.org for more
information about this exciting program!
GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
LIFE THOUGHTS IN THE CHURCH YEAR: Life Thoughts are designed to help pastors and
congregations see the church year through the lens of the sanctity of human life; they are based on
the appointed readings from Lutheran Service Book. September 30 – “I can’t carry this alone”
(Numbers 11:14). Moses echoes the emotions of sudden pregnancy, chronic conditions, and advocating
for life among communities that ignore. “You’re not alone,” says the Lord (Numbers 11:16, Mark 9:40,
James 5:14). “Lean on my people.” Jesus Christ goes with you. The communion of saints shares your
joys and sorrows. Sometimes speaking up for life starts with approaching the lonely. Lord of the
Church, cause our fellowship to show Your love. Amen.
SUNDAY MORNING FOOD FELLOWSHIP: To help with our Sunday morning fellowship at
St. James, we encourage families to bring in breakfast food to share with our congregation. This will
allow church and school families to give back to their church family by sharing some tasty breakfast
foods. Each week we will gather sponsor families to bring in food for the Sunday school hour. St. James
has typically purchased between 6-9 dozen donuts each Sunday for this time. So instead of St. James
purchasing the donuts, each family can sign up to bring in coffee cake, sweet rolls, fruit, bagels, etc.
Please make sure your donation is in the cafeteria before the 8:00 a.m. service each week. Food items
may be dropped off in the cafeteria after school on Friday or during Saturday evening service. Please
label the food items for Sunday morning fellowship.
Questions/Answers:
1. Do the foods have to be homemade? No, you are welcome to bring in homemade food, but you
are also welcome to bring in purchased food.
2. Can an organization within St. James sponsor a week? Yes, we are strongly encouraging
organizations, classes, etc. to support a week.
3. What if we don’t get a sponsor for a week? Then we will order extra donuts for that week.
4. Will coffee and juice continue to be provided during this time? Yes, the normal coffee and
juice will continue to be provided by St. James. The sponsors are just providing the food.
We are going to do a trial run of this donut hour supplement for the months of September and October.
Please sign up online at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c094aa5af2aa7f49-sunday.
DO YOU ENJOY GRILLING OUT? Then we need your help! Join us on Thursday, October 4 at
6:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall to find out about the all new St. James Grill Team. Have questions?
Contact Chris Rowan at [email protected].

Church in Rensselaer. For more details about the rally, click on the event on our St. James (church)
website calendar. Please RSVP to Lucille Walker at (219) 866-3133 by October 8.

6:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall. January and February members are hosting with table decorations and
desserts. All other members are encouraged to bring soup or salad to share. Mark your calendar!

are being made to celebrate the rededication with just one worship service at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday,
November 11 for the weekend. This congregational-wide service will be followed by a carry-in lunch.
Keep watching for more information that will follow as details are completed. Also, keep in mind that
there will be a celebration on Saturday the 17th for the entire Lafayette Lutheran community. We look
forward to thanking God for this blessing with you who are such an important part of all that we do.
RESTORATION CELEBRATION: Join us for a celebration of the sanctuary restoration completion
on Saturday, November 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We will have live music, a brew tent, chili cook-off,
pie-eating contests, bounce houses, babysitting, smoked pork, and a corn hole tournament! Pre-order
your tickets now -- admission price is $10/ individual or $20/ family which includes chili and a drink.
The price at the door will be higher, so stop by the welcome center and get yours today! Please see
www.stjameslaf.org or St James Church and School Facebook page for registration and details for cook-
off and cornhole tournament. Sign-ups will also be posted in the cafeteria. As of now, we have six area
LCMS pastors as judges for the chili cook-off! We are very excited to spend time with those who made
it possible (all of you!) and our sister Lutheran churches. E-mail [email protected] or
[email protected] with questions. Stephanie Fahler and Cara Wetzel, Board of Stewardship
SEWING CIRCLE SENDS THANKS: Thank you ladies for donating your wedding dresses to our
“Baby Sewing” mission. Be sure to take a look at a few of the outfits our sewers have made in sizes
2 lbs. to 8 lbs. on the back wall today. The hospitals, nurses, and doctors are very thankful to have these
beautiful outfits when needed by grieving families. Also ladies, thank you for all your work in sewing
these beautiful outfits and also the complete layettes for such a wonderful mission. Contact Dorothy
Welther at (765) 567-2156 for more information.
BE SURE TO USE YOUR THRIVENT ACTION TEAMS: Can you believe we are heading into the
4th quarter of 2018? It’s not too late for you to take advantage of the Thrivent Action Teams in 2018.
All benefit members of Thrivent can lead two projects per calendar year.
Is St. James having a special event in the next few months? Do you have a family in need
because of medical bills or other hardship? Do you want to help the disabled or elderly by providing
lawn service (raking leaves, cleaning gutters, etc.)? Is the church youth group planning to go to the
National Youth Gathering and needs to do fundraising for this event? You can do one of these
projects or any other worthwhile project and receive as much as $250 seed money! Not sure how to
begin? If you are a member of Thrivent Financial, we are here to help you. It is so easy to apply.
Call the Thrivent Financial office at (765) 449-8888 and ask for Mary Prill (available on Monday
and Wednesday each week). She will be happy to assist you by answering any questions you might
have and help you with the process.
Do you have Choice Dollars to give away yet for 2018? If you are uncertain, give Mary a call at
the Thrivent office. Eligible members are able to direct Choice Dollars to enrolled non-profit
organizations including churches, camps, schools, seminaries, campus ministries, and more.
DO YOU NEED A HOSPITAL BED? I have a hospital bed that I would be happy to donate to
someone that needs one. It is clean and semi-electric which means you can adjust the head and foot,
but you have to hand crank the height of the bed. If you are interested, please contact me, Karren Pass,
at (765) 474-3373 or [email protected].
TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
October 7, 2018
Genesis 2:18–25
Hebrews 2:1–13 (14–18)
Mark 10:2–16
Marriage Is a Sign that Manifests the Gospel of Christ and His Church
Humanity is created in the image and likeness of God. “It is not good that the man should be
alone” (Gen. 2:18). For the Lord Himself is a perfect communion of three Persons — the Father,
Son and Holy Spirit — in one God. Therefore, “the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the
man, and while he slept took one of his ribs,” which “he made into a woman” and brought “to the
man” (Gen. 2:21–22). It is for this reason that “a man shall leave his father and his mother and
hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Gen. 2:24; Mark 10:7). This great mystery
of holy marriage signifies Christ Jesus, the incarnate Son of God, and His Bride, the Church.
Divorce and all manner of adultery contradict and undermine this sign, and in doing so, they
confess a false Christ and a false gospel. “What therefore God has joined together, let not man
separate” (Mark 10:9). In truth, Christ Jesus has atoned for all such sins, and He has perfected
marriage in Himself “through suffering,” that He might bring “many sons to glory” in His
resurrection (Heb. 2:8–10).
“LIFE QUOTES” FROM LUTHERANS FOR LIFE (www.lutheransforlife.org): “My hope and
prayer and encouragement to each of you is to see people of all abilities as God sees them. Each of His
children is beloved and valued. Each is uniquely gifted so that the work of God may be displayed—
through every season of life.” Mona Fuerstenau, director of Lutheran Ministry Partnerships, Bethesda
Lutheran Communities
SHARING CHRISTIAN LOVE: Gaius experienced joy and love at the letter he opened from John.
It was uplifting as well as thoughtful. Read 3 John. Would you like to follow John’s example and
encourage someone? Look for a free greeting card to send to a friend, neighbor, or family member.
There is a box located to the by the Scrip counter in the Welcome Center. Enjoy.
STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Mark 9:45 – “And if your foot causes you to sin,
cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell.” So what is
causing us to sin? Lust? Greed? Fear? Better to cut it off! We need the Lord’s help to do this – and you
are in the right place this Lord’s Day to receive that help through Word and Sacrament.

W E N E E D Y O U T O V O L U N T E E R S F O R :
Life Chain is a peaceful gathering where participants stand
silently in prayer. We hold signs that read “Abortion hurts
women,” “Abortion kills children,” “Jesus forgives and heals,”
and “Lord, forgive us and our nation.” On the back of each sign,
there are scripture verses, songs, and suggestions for prayer.
This is an event where we are gathered as a group; yet
individually we are praying for our nation, for the unborn, and for
those who find themselves facing an unplanned pregnancy with
uncertainty. There is no shouting, no pacing/picketing or loud
protesting. However, it is still very much a “demonstration” of
our pro-life beliefs to our community.
We have a new location! We are excited to announce that the
2018 Life Chain will be along the newly renovated Sagamore
Parkway. Our hope is that the new location will provide many
benefits including much greater message exposure due to higher
traffic counts and more close parking to the event. Our hope is
to spread our message from Kossuth Street to Union Street.
Past Life Chains have certainly made a huge impact locally, as
Lafayette witnesses men and women, girls and boys of all ages
unify across many denominations for the cause of life. This is
a vital time in our community, state, and nation. This is an
excellent opportunity to stand up and make a difference!
If you are interested in being part of the 2018 Life Chain, please
add your name to the signup sheet in the cafeteria prior to
October 1 so that signs can be prepared for our St. James group.
Thank you for your support of Tippecanoe County Right to Life.
Please plan to join us on Saturday, November 3 for our annual fall craft fair.
