With the help of our “Angel Volunteers”, community support, prayers, food drives, and material and monetary donations, we strive to serve those in need or going through a crisis situation. Thank you, Hempstead, for 2013; we look forward to a great community partnership in 2014. We have been blessed to receive a grant from the Houston Food Bank for a huge wall unit refrigerator. Plans are underway to obtain help with drawings for our food pantry expansion, and for fundraisers to help with the cost of the expansion so we can accept the unit. This will increase the size of the shop, give us more working area and storage in the pantry, and make it possible for us to serve more fresh food to our clients. Message from Fr. David:

Greetings all!

I am happy to submit this 2nd in a series of newsletters to you for your reading pleasure.

Our first went over very well and I again want to thank Jo Ann Babbitt for the hard work

she put into gathering all the information and setting it to paper. It’s nice to see all the

goodness and activity of our parish in one place.

Today we stand at the entrance of another Lenten observance. It is always a point of

reflection on how one enters into these observances each year. In his Lenten message for

2014, Pope Francis takes inspiration from the words of St. Paul (2 Cor. 8:9) and asks us to

contemplate Paul’s invitation to live “a life of evangelical poverty.”

The U.S. Bishops suggest that we can begin to embrace this call by fasting from or

“giving up” material things, including certain foods, that are superfluous to our basic needs;

“taking up” habits that are directed to helping and caring for others; and “lifting up” our

brothers and sisters who are in need through prayer and devotion. By taking an active ap-

proach to the three traditional pillars of Lenten observance, prayer, fasting and almsgiving,

we recognize that to be evangelists, we must first be evangelized ourselves.

I truly pray that you all find ways to reflect deeply on your relationship with God and

with each other. I hope that as you live the Gospel you will have a very fruitful Lenten

experience.

Enjoy the newsletter, and let us pray for one another as we live and share in the Love of

Christ in the coming months.

About this issue:

Lent is fast approaching and, in this issue, we have included what I hope will be a lot of useful information regarding our Catholic traditions, their meaning, and how best to grow closer in our relationship with Jesus Christ. We have included sched-ules for Lenten services, as well as religious education classes to help us progress in our faith journey. Our office staff has contributed greatly to this newsletter and I thank them for their input and support. St. Katharine Drexel, pray for us.

DREXEL’S DRIFTERS DRIFT INTO SPRING

Our Senior Group had a fun meeting on Valentine’s Day with a

delicious pot luck lunch and a chocolate challenge. Georgie

We have a tentative calendar for spring events, including a

March trip to Sam Houston Race Park; then dinner and a play

at Unity Theater in Brenham (tentative date, April 3). Later in

April, we will make a trip to Schulenburg to tour four painted

churches. May will bring dinner and a play in Navasota and,

later in the month, a bus trip to Coushatta. In June we will

have a pot luck dinner and plan our summer schedule. Watch

future bulletins for details on all of these activities. Don’t be a

pew potato—join us and have fun!!! For more information on

Bereavement Meal

Do you know that there is a ministry at St. Katharine Drexel

Parish that provides an after-funeral meal for grieving families

and friends of parishioners? The deceased MUST be a mem-

ber of the parish and a Funeral Mass MUST be celebrated at

St. Katharine’s. To utilize this ministry, the office staff will

contact the coordinator when funeral arrangements are made

and she will then contact the family. On the day of the Funer-

al Mass, the Bereavement Team will prepare and serve the

meal at the Knights of Columbus Hall following the funeral.

Volunteers are always needed to help serve and/or provide a

dessert. This ministry is made possible only through the gen-

erosity of families and friends of the parish; it is not funded by

the church. If you would like to contribute a monetary dona-

tion, you can make a check payable to SKD Bereavement

Fund and drop it in the collection basket. If you’d like more

information, please call the coordinator, Hedwig Konieczny at

979-826-2131.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

We, the people of St. Katharine Drexel Church, inspired by the legacy of our patron, strive to welcome all people, provide as-

sistance to those in need, and celebrate our beliefs through the sacraments and God’s word. In the strength of our diverse

backgrounds, we seek to continue our own formation and to evangelize our community, so that we may become united as

sisters and brothers in Christ.

What Is That on Your Head?

Have you ever gotten that question on Ash Wednesday before? How do you feel when people ask you about your ash-

es? Is it difficult to answer their questions? Having ashes on your forehead isn’t just some silly Catholic thing, it’s a tradi-

tion that finds its roots in the Old Testament. “I turned to the Lord God, to seek help, in prayer and petition, with fasting,

sackcloth, and ashes” (Daniel 9:3). When the ashes are placed on our foreheads in the sign of the Cross, it is a reminder

of several things. First, it is a call to repentance: a physical sign that we are sinners in need of forgiveness, which is how

the prophets used it in the Old Testament. Second, it is to remind us that God created us from the earth and when we

die, we will return to it. But here’s the best part: As Pope Benedict XVI has said, “Man is dust and to dust he shall return,

but dust is precious in God's eyes because God created man, destining him to immortality.” God so loves us that, even

when our bodies return to the dust, our souls are meant to live forever with him. The ashes symbolize all of this.

Now you have an answer to evangelize those who question or maybe never knew why they received the ashes.

RCIA...The way to become Catholic

RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, is a restoration of an ancient practice of initiation into the Church. It is a process

of discerning and ritualizing the stages of conversion, leading to full communion within the Catholic Church.

The first stage of this journey is “The Inquiry Stage.” A person entering this stage may experience a gentle urging to discover

deeper meaning in life, or may just be curious about the Catholic Church. The Inquiry Stage is a time to gather with other inquirers,

ask questions, and meet other Catholics in the community. At this time there is no commitment.

RCIA is for ages 7-99+ years who are interested in the Catholic faith:

the searching

the unbaptized

baptized Christians in another faith who may think about becoming Catholic

baptized non-catechized Catholics who never received First Communion or Confirmation

If you, or anyone you know is experiencing a desire to find meaning in life or wish to know more about the Catholic Church, you

are invited to RCIA on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. For more information, contact Lucille Pavlock at 979-826-

Mardi Gras

On the day before Ash Wednesday, we celebrate Mardi Gras. These French words mean “Fat Tuesday”. Many

years ago people were not permitted to eat meat, butter, eggs, cream, or sugar during Lent; so, on the day before Ash Wednesday, they used these ingredients to make rich cakes and delicious meals. The none of the forbidden goods

would be left in their kitchens during Lent. Nowadays we celebrate Mardi Gras with parades, fancy masks, and

colorful beaded necklaces. The masks remind us that sometimes we are not who God wants us to be. We hide behind sins and bad habits. Masks symbolize the “false self” that needs to change during Lent.

What Are Sacraments?

Sacraments are not ”steps to God.” Sacraments are not “hoops to go through”, “ things to get,” or even

“degrees of Church membership.” Sacraments have nothing to do with school or education, and even less to

do with a certain grade level (such as second grade). Sacraments are none of these things.

Yet we often hear these phrases and even use these phrases to describe and talk about sacraments. We

use them because that is how we have probably experienced sacraments, and we do not know how else to

speak of them. We use these phrases because we have lost touch with the mystery of Jesus. There are

many people who, as they say, “received all their sacraments,” but who have never experienced and entered

into the mystery of Jesus.

Recall when Jesus said to the people, “You are looking for me not because you have seen the signs, but

because you had all the bread you wanted to eat” (see John 6:26). They stopped at the bread; they never

moved beyond the eating. We must move beyond the “getting,” even “the receiving” of sacraments, into the

mystery they symbolize, celebrate, and make present. Sacraments are important and powerful because they

immerse us into Christ and his life-giving mystery. Whether nourishing, forgiving, healing, commissioning, the

sacraments put us in touch with Jesus. The goal is not get sacraments; the goal is to connect with Jesus and

live his mystery today.

Want to learn more about the sacraments and our Catholic faith? Join us in the evenings at 7:00 p.m. See

the schedule below for dates and times.

KNIGHTS NEWS

CASINO NIGHT MARCH 01, 2014

On March 1st, the K.C. will host it’s Annual Casino Night. This is a night filled with great food and fun. Stop on

by to try your luck at the many casino games of chance and try to win some great prizes. On the menu are grilled

ribeye steaks and fixins’ cooked by the reknown Waller County Cooking Crew of Hempstead’s Knights of Colum-

bus.

ANNUAL FISH FRY

Well, here it is Lent again and the Knights are cooking up a Friday feast for you. This is some of the best fried catfish in Southeast

and Central Texas. If I’m lying, I’m crying. The fish fries have become a local tradition here in Hempstead and surrounding com-

munities with people from all over the area coming to sample these gastronomical delights. Chef Perry Pratt sets the bar high with

his southern culinary skills. It is rumored that a major restaurant chain in Texas has been after his secret recipe for years. Chef Perry

tells us that there is nothing like good southern catfish to fill your belly after going to Stations of the Cross! Fish Fry Fridays will be

held each Friday during Lent, starting on March 7th thru and including April 11th. The Annual Dessert Auction will be held on

April 11th.

KNIGHTS HOLD CORPORATE COMMUNION

LENT...A SEASON OF FAST AND ABSTINENCE

“What are you hungry for?” Sometimes the answer is obvious: pizza, Chinese food, a juice steak, our favorite Mexican or

Italian foods. But our spiritual hungers are rarely that easy to identify. Our 40-day preparation for Easter, Lent, is our an-

nual invitation to grow in awareness of those deeper hungers. We need lent to help us recognize that our meaning and

mission are rooted in Jesus’ dying and rising. Together with those preparing for baptism, we join in outward signs of our

inner conversion. Our year-round prayer, fasting and almsgiving take on new meaning during this season.

Catholics were once well known for our practice of not eating meat on Friday, a form of fasting called abstinence. We

were also called to limit our food intake on a variety of other fast days. The Second Vatican Council sought to simplify the

often complicated questions that arose regarding fast and abstinence, while re-emphasizing the continuing need for such

practices. The current laws took effect in 1966 and they read simply: “Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday

are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and each Friday in Lent. Catholics who have celebrated their 18th

birthday, in addition to abstaining from meat, should fast, i.e., eat only one full meal on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

Smaller quantities of food may be taken at two other meals but no food should be consumed at any other time during

those two days. The obligation of fasting ceases with the celebration of one’s 59th birthday.” The spirit of the law may also

invite us to fast from other activities as well: from television or computer games, from eating out, or from gossiping. So,

what are you giving up for Lent?

FRIDAY FOODS FOR LENT

Spaghetti and clams…

Cook 12 oz. of spaghetti. Splash with olive oil; toss with minced garlic and drained canned clams,

then top with Parmeson cheese. Adjust proportions to taste; season with salt and pepper if de-

sired.

Minestra…

This Italian dish essentially consists of the contents of the refrigerator, tossed in a frypan to make a stew-like meal and

served with bread and butter.

Try these variations:

Slice zucchini and chopped onions; season with salt and pepper to taste. Fry in buttr or oil until the liquid begins to

emerge; add tomato sauce (or chopped fresh tomatoes), then create “pockets” and crack eggs into them; cover and

steam until poached.

Cook washed escarole in a cup of water for 15 minutes. In a small saucepan, saute diced garlic in oil, then add escarole

and cook 2 minutes on medium heat. Add a can of cannellini beans; heat through and serve.

Saute minced garlic, chopped celery, chopped onion, and chopped endive in oil or butter. Add a can of great northern

beans, undrained, and heat through. Season with grated Parmesan cheese and hot pepper flakes.

Simple Breaded Fish Fry…

Coat fish fillets (perch is usually on sale during Lent) with seasoned bread crumbs and fry in butter. Alternately, use

plain bread crumbs missed with a little Parmesan cheese.

Rice and Beans…

In a saucepan, combine cooked rice, chopped onion, a can of chili beans, and corn. Heat through and serve in taco or

tostada shells or mix with lettuce.

Mensaje del Padre David:

Saludos a Todos!

Sid Chipman, Director

CONSEJO PASTORAL

mos, vamos a volver a ella.
