Winter Weather Reminders As we approach winter, there is the potential for inclement weather. There are several ways to determine whether BCPS schools are operating on a abridged schedule (delayed opening or early closure) or if they are closed. This information can be found in one of the following places:

410-887-5555 In the event that school closes early, please review your family’s plan regarding early dismissal with your child. Frequent reviews and reminders will help your child be prepared to follow your family’s plan whenever it is needed. Please don’t forget that if schools close early or after school activities are cancelled, our after school Gator Pro-gram closes as well.

School Bus Safety Reminders It is critical that students riding Baltimore County Public School buses understand that riding the school bus is a privilege, not a right. This privilege may be temporarily suspended or permanently revoked if a child’s behavior jeopardizes the safe operation of the bus or the safety of other children riding the bus. Please speak with your children about the importance of obeying the safe riding rules.

Students receiving transportation services have the responsibility to follow all bus rules. • At the bus stop, wait in an orderly manner, out of the way of all traffic, until the bus stops and the driver opens the door. • Stand at least five (5) feet back from the stopping position of the bus. • Wait until the bus stops completely before moving forward to board it. • The aisle of the bus must be kept clear of legs, feet, back-packs and all other items, so that the rear emergency exit is accessible at all times. Once on board the bus: • Speak quietly and respectfully and behave in a mannerly fashion • Keep cell phones turned off until exiting the bus • Keep the bus clean and neat • Respect the property of others • Refrain from eating or drinking • Please keep your hands to yourself • Wait until the bus stops moving before getting out of the seat and moving forward to get off of the bus. • Always board the assigned bus and get on and off at the regularly assigned bus stop. • Once off the bus, proceed to the appropriate destination without loitering. Please be sure that your child is properly dressed during this time of year. The temperatures have dropped and many children are not wearing the proper clothing. If snow is on the ground, students must not pick up the snow and hit others at the bus stops. Do not bring snow on the bus either! These unsafe practices can lead to bus suspensions. If an incident occurs on the bus, please have your child report it to the nearest adult when he/she arrives at school. For addi-tional information for parents and students regarding transportation, you can visit http://www.bcps.org/offices/transportation/pdf/Parents-Students-Guide.pdf

Spanish Updates ¡Hola! ¡Saludos de la clase de español! The four th and fifth grade students continue to make huge progress in learning Spanish. In fourth grade, we continue to have mini conversations in Spanish. Each class is using the new vocabulary and questioning that we learn. Students are starting to read mini-paragraphs in Spanish and write in complete sentences. They were able to answer riddles about animals and even designed and described their own monsters! In the next few weeks, students will learn how to describe which activities they like and do not like to do, as well as the ideal weather to do those activities in. In fifth grade, students are learning how to say the time and how to describe the different types of transportation used to get around. Students will combine these skills to create a transportation schedule for their dream school. Students will start to work on Mission 2 in the next few weeks. Are you looking to practice some Spanish at home? Ask your child to teach you what they learned in Spanish class each week! Also, here are some Spanish phrases you can practice at home during January.

¡Hasta luego! Señorita Kaiser
