The General’s CommissioninG messaGe To The

‘DisCiples of The Cross’

Dear Cadets:

Commissioner Silvia and I are delighted to greet you on the occasion of your ordination and commissioning as Salvation Army officers. Congratulations to each one of you!

Each year training sessions right across the Salvation Army world are all called by the same name, a practice that began in 1936. Throughout this year, therefore, hundreds of cadets have been and are being commissioned who belong to this session known as Disciples of the Cross.

I urge you to remember that your sessional name does not cease to exist once you have been commissioned and moved out to your first appointments. You were Disciples of the Cross before you came to the training college – and you are called to be Disciples of the Cross for the rest of your lives!

A disciple is not one who simply follows; a disciple is one who follows with a view to learning. As you go out into the world, you go as followers of Jesus who turned the Cross from a symbol of shame to a symbol of salvation and freedom and hope. As you follow each day, may you also learn each day – learn more about the Cross, learn more about the Risen Christ, learn more about the skill of communicating the message of the Cross to a needy world.

Whatever appointment opportunities may be yours through the years ahead, use them all to preach Christ, and to preach the Cross for, as Scripture reminds us: ‘it is the power of God’ (1 Cor. 1:18).

Go with God, and He will bless you abundantly.

Yours sincerely,

André Cox GENERAL

Greetings from our Territorial Leade rsGreetings from our Territorial Leaders

June 12, 2011My Dear Cadets:

Your session name is yours to keep. It will give you an identity and a purpose which will last a lifetime. It

describes who you are and what you believe. May you embrace it as a permanent reminder of the journey

you have undertaken.

First of all, you are a disciple! That means you have devoted your life to learning and becoming. It is no

small thing to make that kind of personal growth commitment. Taken seriously, it will become a source of

continuous change throughout your life. True discipleship entails true change.

Secondly you have declared yourselves to be disciples of the cross. The cross of Jesus is the most powerful

symbol in the world. It announces hope, forgiveness of sins, and eternal life to all who embrace it. This

has now become your life calling: to point others to the sacred tree, the source of true spiritual life and

freedom.

God bless you as you live out this calling. As disciples you will go to places and meet people yet unknown

to you. Be faithful in lifting up the cross at all times so others will see and believe, becoming followers

themselves.

We bless you in this sacred undertaking.

Sincerely,

Commissioners Barry C. and E. Sue SwansonTerritorial Leaders

Affirmation of Faith and Promise Affirmation of Faith and Promise

Ordination and CommissioningSunday, June 8 • 10:00 AM • great American hall

THE CHIEF SECRETARY Do you promise by holy living, boundless charity and adherence to the principles and discipline of the army to show yourselves at all times to be faithful officers of the Salvation army?

THE CADETS We do!

THE CHIEF SECRETARY In the name of God I accept the declarations and promises you have made this day. We will now proceed to your commissioning and ordination.

THE CHIEF SECRETARY Do you promise faithfully to maintain and proclaim these truths?

THE CADETS We do!

THE CHIEF SECRETARY Do you regard it as your duty to bear this witness everywhere, to strive to lead all persons to their only Savior, and for His sake to care for the poor, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, love the unlovable, and befriend those who have no friends?

THE CADETS We do!

tHE ProMisE

tHE AFFirMAtion oF FAitHTHE CADETS In the name of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and in the presence of the officers, soldiers, and friends of The Salvation army here assembled, we declare that we believe:

1. That the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and that they only constitute the Divine rule of Christian faith and practice.

2. That there is only one God, who is infinitely perfect, the Creator, Preserver, and Governor of all things, and who is the only proper object of religious worship.

3. That there are three persons in the Godhead—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, undivided in essence and co–equal in power and glory.

4. That in the person of Jesus Christ the Divine and human natures are united, so that He is truly and properly God and truly and properly man.

5. That our first parents were created in a state of innocency, but by their disobedience they lost their purity and happiness, and that in consequence of their fall all men have become sinners,

totally depraved, and as such are justly exposed to the wrath of God.

6. That the Lord Jesus Christ has by His suffering and death made an atonement for the whole world so that whosoever will may be saved.

7. That repentance towards God, faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit, are necessary to salvation.

8. That we are justified by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and that he that believeth hath the witness in himself.

9. That continuance in a state of salvation depends upon continued obedient faith in Christ.

10. That it is the privilege of all believers to be wholly sanctified, and that their whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

11. In the immortality of the soul; in the resurrection of the body; in the general judgment at the end of the world; in the eternal happiness of the righteous; and in the endless punishment of the wicked.

the officer is offered up to the help and guidance of the Holy spirit by the intercession of the faithful in Christ. the officer declares by the signing of the covenant and by the commissioning that he or she will be loyal to scriptural

truth and, by example in life, word and unsparing service, be true to his or her calling as Christ’s messenger.

Covenant Service

Who is on the lord’s side? Frances Ridley Havergal (1836–79)

Who is on the Lord’s side? Who will serve the King? Who will be his helpers Other lives to bring? Who will leave the world’s side? Who will face the foe? Who is on the Lord’s side? Who for him will go?

By thy grand redemption, By thy grace divine, We are on the Lord’s side; Saviour, we are thine.

Not for weight of glory, Not for crown and palm, Enter we the army, Raise the warrior psalm; But for love that claimeth Lives for whom he died; He whom Jesus nameth Must be on his side.

Jesus, thou hast bought us, Not with gold or gem, But with thine own life–blood For thy diadem. With thy blessing filling Each who comes to thee, Thou hast made us willing, Thou hast made us free.

Fierce may be the conflict, Strong may be the foe, But the King’s own army None can overthrow. Round his standard ranging, Victory is secure, For his truth unchanging Makes the triumph sure.

Master, thou wilt keep us, By thy grace divine. Always on the Lord’s side, Saviour, always thine.

near the Cross Fanny Crosby (1820–1915)

Jesus, keep me near the cross; There a precious fountain, Free to all, a healing stream, Flows from Calvary’s mountain.

In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever; Till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.

Near the cross, a trembling soul, Love and mercy found me; There the bright and morning star Shed its beams around me.

Near the cross! O Lamb of God, Bring its scenes before me; Help me walk from day to day With its shadow o’er me.

Near the cross I’ll watch and wait, Hoping, trusting ever, Till I reach the golden strand Just beyond the river.

i Will Follow thee Verses: Henry Francis Lyte (1793–1847); Chorus: James Lawson Elginburg

Jesus, I my cross have taken, All to leave, and follow thee; Though I be despised, forsaken, Thou from hence my all shalt be.

I will follow thee, my Saviour, Thou hast shed thy blood for me: And though all the world forsake thee, By thy grace I’ll follow thee.

Perish every fond ambition, All I’ve sought or hoped or known; Yet how rich is my condition, God and Heaven are still my own.

Let the world despise and leave me, They have left my Saviour too; Human hearts and looks deceive me, Thou art not like them, untrue.

And while thou shalt smile upon me, God of wisdom, love and might, Foes may hate and friends may shun me, Show thy face and all is bright.

O ‘tis not in grief to harm me, While thy love is left to me! O ‘twere not in joy to charm me, Were that joy not found in thee!

All Creatures of our god And King Francis of Assisi (1182–1226); trs William Henry Draper (1855–1933)

All creatures of our God and King, Lift up your voice and with us sing Alleluia, alleluia! Thou burning sun with golden beam, Thou silver moon with softer gleam:

Thou rushing wind that art so strong, Ye clouds that sail in heaven along, O praise him, alleluia! Thou rising morn, in praise rejoice, Ye lights of evening, find a voice:

Thou flowing water, pure and clear, Make music for thy Lord to hear, Alleluia, alleluia! Thou fire so masterful and bright, That givest man both warmth and light:

Dear mother earth, who day by day Unfoldest blessings on our way, O praise him, alleluia! The flowers and fruits that in thee grow, Let them his glory also show:

Let all things their Creator bless, And worship him in humbleness, O praise him, alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, And praise the Spirit, Three in One:

O praise him, O praise him, Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Christ is All Verses: Herbert Howard Booth (1862–1926); Chorus: W.H. Williams

I bring to thee my heart to fill; I feel how weak I am, but still To thee for help I call. In joy or grief, to live or die, For earth or Heaven, this is my cry, Be thou my all in all.

Christ is all, yes, all in all. My Christ is all in all.

Around me in the world I see No joy that turns my soul from thee; Its honors fade and fall; But with thee, though I mount the cross, I count it gain to suffer loss, For thou art all in all.

I’ve little strength to call my own, And what I’ve done, before thy throne I here confess, is small; But on thy strength, O God, I lean, And through the blood that makes me clean, Thou art my all in all.

No tempest can my courage shake, My love from thee no pain can take, No fear my heart appall; And where I cannot see I’ll trust, For then I know thou surely must Be still my all in all.

ORDINATION AND COMMISSIONING

How great thou Art Carl Gustav Boberg (1859–1940); trs. Stuart K. Hine (1899–1989)

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder Consider all the worlds thy hands have made; I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy pow’r throughout the universe displayed:

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee; How great thou art, how great thou art! Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee: How great thou art, how great thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees, When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur, And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:

And when I think that God, his Son not sparing, Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in; That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin:

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation, And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! Then I shall bow in humble adoration, And there proclaim, my God, how great thou art!

send the Fire William Booth (1829–1912)

Thou Christ of burning, cleansing flame, Send the fire! Thy blood–bought gift today we claim, Send the fire! Look down and see this waiting host, Give us the promised Holy Ghost, We want another Pentecost, Send the fire!

God of Elijah, hear our cry: Send the fire! To make us fit to live or die, Send the fire! To burn up every trace of sin, To bring the light and glory in, The revolution now begin, Send the fire!

‘Tis fire we want, for fire we plead, Send the fire! The fire will meet our every need, Send the fire! For strength to ever do the right, For grace to conquer in the fight. For power to walk the world in white, Send the fire!

To make our weak hearts strong and brave, Send the fire! To live a dying world to save, Send the fire! O see us on thy altar lay Our lives, our all, this very day, To crown the offering now we pray, Send the fire!!

there is Power Lewis Edgar Jones (1865–1936)

Would you be free from your burden of sin? There’s power in the blood, power in the blood! Would you o’er evil a victory win? There’s wonderful power in the blood!

There is power, power, wonder–working power, In the blood of the Lamb. There is power, power, wonder–working power, In the precious blood of the Lamb.

Would you be free from your passion and pride? There’s power in the blood, power in the blood! Come then for cleansing to Calvary’s tide; There’s wonderful power in the blood!

Would you be whiter, yes, whiter than snow? There’s power in the blood, power in the blood! Sin stains are lost in its life–giving flow; There’s wonderful power in the blood!

Would you do service for Jesus your King? There’s power in the blood, power in the blood! Would you live daily his praises to sing? There’s wonderful power in the blood!

i Know Whom i Have Believed Daniel Webster Whittle (1840–1901)

I know not why God’s wondrous grace To me he hath made known; Nor why, unworthy of such grace, He claimed me for his own.

I know not how this saving faith To me he did impart, Nor how believing in his word Wrought peace within my heart.

I know not how the Spirit moves, Convincing men of sin; Revealing Jesus through the word, Creating faith in him.

But I know whom I have believ’ed, And am persuaded that he is able To keep that which I’ve committed Unto him against that day.

I know not what of good or ill May be reserved for me, Of weary ways or golden days, Before his face I see.

i’ll go in the strength Edward Turney (1816–72)

I’ll go in the strength of the Lord, In paths he has marked for my feet; I’ll follow the light of his word, Nor shrink from the dangers I meet, His presence my steps shall attend, His fullness my wants shall supply; On him, till my journey shall end, My unwavering faith shall rely.

I’ll go in the strength of the Lord To work he appoints me to do; In joy which his smile doth afford My soul shall her vigor renew. His wisdom shall guard me from harm. His power my sufficiency prove; I’ll trust his omnipotent arm, And prove his unchangeable love.

I’ll go, I’ll go in the strength, I’ll go in the strength of the Lord I’ll go, I’ll go in the strength, I’ll go in the strength of the Lord.

I’ll go in the strength of the Lord To conflicts which faith will require, His grace as my shield and reward, My courage and zeal shall inspire. Since he gives the word of command. To meet and encounter the foe, With his sword of truth in my hand. To suffer and triumph I’ll go.
