Description:
Strategic thinking – properly understood and applied – is a career-enhancing competency and source of organizational advantage. An analysis of current career opportunities shows that employers want and value the ability to work strategically as well as operationally. Put simply: Strategic thinkers get promoted. Programs and projects are instruments of strategy, so program and project managers need to acquire strategic thinking competency. Strategic thinking is a distinctive and recognizable style of thinking that involves learned skills. This presentation shows how to develop the capacity for strategic thinking, blend it with acquired business acumen, and apply to their personal goals and their organizational goals. Program managers especially, but also many project managers, use the organization's strategic goals and plans as inputs to their governance activities. Many PMOs are now taking on responsibilities for facilitating the strategic planning process for their organizations. Yet, often Program and Project Managers people are unclear about what exactly strategy is, and how it differs from goals and objectives. They need insight so they can step up and assure strategic alignment. This presentation has been made to nearly 1,000 PMI members in the last 18 months alone, and has received an enthusiastic reception. Finish 2014 right and join us for an interesting discussion enhancing your professional project management skills with strategic thinking.

Trend: PMI Standards Emphasize Project Linkages to Strategy

“In order to bridge the gap between

organizational strategy and successful

business value realization, the use of

portfolio, program, and project

management techniques is essential.”

57% of PMOs reported that they

are providing strategic decision

support and the PMO is involved

in strategy discussions in some

way

“More and more, PMOs are getting

involved in strategic-decision support”

A question for you to ponder…

why are PMOs

increasingly involved in

strategy discussions?

(I’ll offer a few insights as we go along)

Reality Check

“Our senior management team can neither

develop a competent strategy for our

organization nor execute it.”

“Our organization has no formal process for

developing strategy.”

statement! N=1000

Reality Check

“Most executives cannot articulate the

objective, scope and advantages of their

business in a simple statement. If they can’t,

then neither can anyone else.”

– Collis and Rukstad in a 2008 HBR article that was selected for the

McKinsey Award for best article

1st….. What strategy isn’t…

“executives who complain about execution

problems have usually

confused strategy with goal setting” *

The result is “bad strategy” that

..is full of fluff statements. “Our fundamental strategy is

one of customer-centric intermediation.”

…fails to recognize or confront challenges.

* Richard Rumelt, Good Strategy/Bad Strategy
