Dear Family,A young volunteer at 3ABN was asked, “How do we keep our

youth in the church?” She rapidly responded, “Quit trying to entertain us, and give us a challenge!” Sounds to me like the wise advice we were given before: “We have an army of youth today who can do much if they are properly directed and encouraged.” (Ellen White, Testimonies to Ministers, p. 32.)

God is up to something big! He is calling young folks into service, and everywhere I turn I see youth in action—community services, evangelism, and even fundraising for such projects as 3ABN downlink installations. Th ese young leaders of our church are accomplishing incredible things by the grace of God.

Seeing this makes me take note of my grandchildren, and recognize the awesome responsibility the Lord has placed upon parents and grandparents to train them up for the work God has committed to us. In churches where youth are trained and active, their example energizes the entire congregation.

3ABN is diligently at work developing three new youth programs. We believe it is our privi-lege and responsibility to hold up our youth in prayer and in training for greater works in God’s harvest fi elds. If the Holy Spirit impresses you to support these projects, please mark your donations for “Youth.”

Th ank you for all you do to advance God’s ministry at 3ABN. We couldn’t do it without you!

Greg Morikone has fond memories of bouncing in his father’s compa-

ny’s 4-wheel drive Jeep as they climbed the ruts of a mountain road somewhere in West Vir-ginia. His father oft en took him and his little sister to visit his home health-care patients.

“Looking back, I realize that we were missionaries in the truest sense of the word,” Greg says. “We brought hope and cheer to those who were ill and dying, and my father always prayed with his patients. Th en he would get us to sing ‘Jesus Loves Me,’ or some other chil-dren’s song, but I have to admit I wasn’t always eager. Sometimes I was a self-conscious 6-year-old singing for strangers, but their eyes would well up in tears, and it always made me feel good to know that my song had touched their heart.

“My sister and I had a great

time together. We played in the creek and made mud pies. I must have been a master chef, since she thought they looked good enough to eat and tried one!” Apparently Greg was quite the actor, too. Aft er attending a funeral with his family, the kids decided to have a “funeral” of their own. “I was the one who played dead, and we made a shallow grave. Th en, since we didn’t have a preacher, I had the eulogy from my grave—and apparently it was so sad that my sister cried! But that was okay,” he adds with a grin, “because she was supposed to be the mourner, too!”

Greg admits to having wor-ried his parents a bit during his teenage years. Th ey sat him down one day and explained that they didn’t want to see him heartbroken. Th en they handed him a beautiful box. Inside he found a key—the key to his

heart. “When you break up with someone you’re dating, the next girl gets just a little less of your heart, since it was injured by the fi rst breakup,” they explained. “If this happens over and over, you become hardened, and when you fi nd someone really special, you’ll have all those past memo-ries aff ecting how much of your heart you can give her.” They asked him earnestly to keep the key to his heart and give it only to the one he would marry.

Greg was stunned. “I real-ized the risk they took of being misunderstood by me, but I was raised to honor my parents, so I honored them now by making a diffi cult commitment to the Lord to not pursue a relation-ship before and during college.” He quickly adds, “I don’t want to discourage anyone who didn’t have the same experience I had. God is the ‘God of new begin-nings,’ and I’m so glad that He

can give each of us a brand new start from any point! But that decision saved me much heartache.”

Greg went off to college and soon met Jill Penney in the caf-eteria. “I had a curious feeling that someday I would marry this girl,” he confesses. “I was so impressed by her love for Jesus, her genuine interest in people, and her very pleasant disposition. And besides, she’s very beautiful!”

Now Greg began looking for a college internship, and his involvement in his school’s media department led him to contact 3ABN. Aft er not hear-

ing anything for many weeks, he prayed and told the Lord that he would pursue a differ-ent option unless he heard back from 3ABN within the next 24 hours. “I checked my e-mail the next morning. Nothing. That afternoon I logged on to contact a different internship site and there it was—an e-mail saying 3ABN would be glad to have me!”

Greg’s cheerful disposition and hard work as a cameraman and with lighting landed him a job working with the produc-tion crew on the road before his internship was over. Then one day they needed a video engineer, and again, Greg’s will-ingness turned into another

opportunity. “Over the next few years Jill

and I stayed in touch through letters and the occasional phone call,” he says, “but I needed to decide if this friendship had a future. Then, one day I felt strongly impressed to talk to Jill’s parents and ask their bless-ing in pursuing a relationship with their daughter.” What Greg didn’t know is that Jill had asked for a sign from the Lord about whether she should allow their friendship to grow, and without his knowledge, had asked the Lord to impress Greg to talk to her parents within the next 12 hours, if it was meant to be!

Luckily, her parents agreed, and Greg was a happy man!

Soon they were married, and Greg began working in the 3ABN Print Shop so he could be home with his new wife. “Jill is my best friend and my great-est fan,” he says. “She loves to make me happy, and she is my constant encourager—like sun-shine on a cloudy day. I thank the Lord for her every day!”

After several years Greg had a new challenge when he was suddenly offered the position of Call Center manager. “I couldn’t believe it,” he says. “I didn’t have the experience I needed to manage all the different aspects of that department.” But God was guiding, and Greg took the challenge. As he began the gigantic task of learning a new job, God was faithful. “I hadn’t had any time to train into my position, and when something would need to be ordered, I had no clue where to look,” he says. “Then suddenly a scrap of paper with a vendor’s name and num-ber would appear, or I would get a phone call from someone, and God would help me find out what I needed to know. I also had a marvelous staff that was so gracious when I made mistakes. They worked their hearts out for me and shared

what they knew. They were there behind me—and would not let me fail!”

It wasn’t long until the Call Center’s services were drasti-cally improved. New systems were put in place, and new ideas were explored. What has been the secret to his success? Cer-tainly faithfulness in doing his best, but there’s more. “When I am faced with a decision, I want to seek God’s will first. So I pray about it, and I seek counsel from my wife and those who understand the situation. Most importantly, I try to listen to the prompting of the Holy Spirit.”

Greg pauses for a moment. “I want to tell you another way God helps me know His will,” he continues. “I look in the Scriptures and I am constantly amazed how a familiar text will suddenly contain an application I’ve never seen before! Then comes the peace that only God can give.”

As you get to know Greg and Jill Morikone you can’t help but believe that God has brought this young, energetic, and lovely couple to work among us. They continue to bless us with their cheerful Christian attitude and their deep love for Jesus.

3ABN LATINO NEWS

No one upon this earth can accurately measure the impact that 3ABN

is making in the world. Daily reports come in by phone, e-mail, and regular mail about how lives are being trans-formed. I’m so glad that God gives us the privilege of know-ing just a few of the countless lives that are being touched through this ministry. What an awesome God we serve!

Some folks are very brief and simply write, “I watch your pro-grams every day,” or, “I really enjoy your programs.” Others share more details, helping us to see how the Holy Spirit is using our programs and music, and our speakers. I’m always touched by these marvelous

we get an accurate idea of the impact that 3ABN is making on this world. Th roughout eternity we will hear stories that will motivate us to say, “Amen!” and, “Glory be to God in the highest!”

But while we may have to wait until heaven to get the full story, here’s what I can tell you now—so please get yourself ready to say, “Amen!”

Recently a mother told me how her son had stopped going to church. He had started hang-ing around with the wrong crowd and was even saying some rebellious things at home. She told me he was arriving home late at night and had even started experimenting with cigarettes and other things. It seemed as if nothing the family said could reach him. His mother was very worried and began making heartfelt appeals. “Son, please come back to Jesus!” she would beg, but he refused and seemed to keep distancing himself from his family.

One day Rosa (not her real name) was in the living room watching 3ABN Latino when her son came in and sat down on the couch. When Rosa

noticed that an “altar call” was being made in the youth pro-gram she was watching, she turned to look at her son to see what impact, if any, it was having on him. His eyes were closed, and Rosa feared that he had fallen asleep—missing this wonderful program! Th en Rosa noticed that her son would fall asleep during a heart-touching program on 3ABN Latino more and more frequently.

Finally, she could hold back no longer and had another heart-to-heart talk with her son, asking him to return to the Lord. To her indescribable joy, he decided to return to the Lord and come back to church! She later found out that he only pretended to fall asleep on the couch, but that the messages on 3ABN Latino were actually helping him make a decision to return to the Lord. Please join me in saying, “Amen!”

Th e Lord continues to open doors for 3ABN Latino to get on more cable systems, and this month we praise the Lord for the doors that have opened recently in Colombia, Mexico, and Honduras. Th ank you for remembering 3ABN Latino in your prayers.

Hey Kids, I was driving through our little town of Thompsonville, Illinois, and I was surprised to see a mother duck with her paddling of ducklings (I counted 20 of them)! They were in single-� le crossing the highway towards the school. They ended up in front of the door that said, “All visitors and parents are to report to the o� ce,” and that’s where they decided to take a rest. Are they too cute or what? Th e y e a r w a s 1 � 4 2 . Dwight Coder was 20 and had just met 17-

year-old Barbara, a junior in high school. Th eir friends had introduced them, and they all began “hanging out” together. Th e more they talked, the more

they realized that their relatives all knew each other. Dwight knew Barbara’s grandparents, as well as her aunts and uncles. His dad was a blacksmith and

a farrier who had shoed her grandfather’s horses. And then there was the fact that Dwight’s sister and Barbara’s aunt were best friends in high school and had grown up together in the same church!

Th ings were going well, and Dwight and Barbara had been dating a couple of months when he realized that he was going to be drafted into the military. In order to have the choice of which branch of mili-tary service he wished to be in, Dwight joined the Navy and was sent overseas.

Imagine the heartbreak Bar-bara felt as she found herself saying goodbye to her new boyfriend. It seemed like all the young men were being drafted, and a sense of inse-curity hung over all the young people as they said goodbye, never knowing whether they would see each other again.

“We didn’t know if we would live or die from one day to the next,” Barbara says. “Every block of a neighborhood had an air warden appointed to scan the skies for enemy bomb-ers. Aft er the bombing of Pearl Harbor we didn’t know if or where Japan would attack us next! Our lives were very much aff ected by the war with blackouts, and we all huddled around the radio for the latest reports about the war.”

And then there were the ration stamps needed in order to purchase such things as

sugar, shoes, tires, and gas. It seemed like everyone’s shoes were patched on the bottom to make them last longer. So it was during those diffi cult times aft er Barbara and Dwight said goodbye.

Even though they corre-sponded a couple of times, it seemed like they were not des-tined to be together. Th e letters had stopped coming—until the day Barbara received a letter telling her that he was dating an Irish girl, whom he later married. By then, Barbara had also decided not to wait and

began dating the young man who would become her hus-band for 55 years. A year and a half aft er he died, Barbara mar-ried one of her husband’s army buddies. Sadly, her happiness was short-lived. Soon after their marriage they discov-ered that he had cancer of the esophagus, and he died aft er just three years of marriage.

Another year and a half went by, and one day Dwight’s sister and a friend of Barbara’s invited them both out to din-ner. Dwight’s wife had died three years before, and even though 63 years had passed, the attraction was still there! Th ree

months later they were married on October 13, 2005. “I believe God had His hand over us, get-ting us back together again,” Dwight says.

When Barbara was 10, a neighbor invited her and her two younger brothers to Sab-bath School, and they loved it. Th e boys took their copy of Our Little Friend (a children’s magazine) home for Mama to read to them. Barbara says this little paper was instrumental in her family becoming Seventh-day Adventists. Although her father was convinced of the truth in the teachings of the church, for some reason he

resisted baptism with the rest of his family. Th en one day, years later, they stopped in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on their way to Florida, and dropped in for a visit with Pastor H. R. Veach. To the surprise of the entire family, her father then asked Pastor Veach to baptize him! Th e pastor decided there was no time like the present and said, “Let’s all go down to the river. You ladies sing while I do the baptism.” Barbara says she was so grateful for this, since only one year later, her father unexpectedly passed away at the young age of 4�.

Dwight had been a Christian man, too, and although he was not a Seventh-day Adventist, he was happy to watch 3ABN with his bride, who has been a long time viewer. When the ’05 Revive series with Doug Batchelor began on 3ABN, Dwight was intrigued by what he heard and wanted to know more. He became a regular viewer of all the speakers on 3ABN, and later, when Shawn Boonstra made an appeal to follow Jesus, Dwight stood to his feet in their living room to indicate that he wanted to be baptized.

What a happy day it was just this past June, when Pastor Fred Troxel lowered Dwight into the baptismal waters in Shelbyville, Indiana. With his sins forgiven, and a new life in Christ, Dwight emerged

knowing he had made the most important decision of his life. “My church family loved him into our church,” Barbara says. “It’s like a large family, and I know he felt right at home.”

What a joy it was to have Barbara and Dwight at our 3ABN Spring Camp Meeting recently. Like so many others, this lovely couple even came a few days early to volunteer. Even now, 3ABN continues to make a diff erence in their lives. “You don’t know how it keeps our spirits up all week long to watch 3ABN,” Barbara says. Well, yes, we do, Barbara. Yes, we do.

• Variety of Location: in the great congregation in the house of the Lord, on the walls of Jerusalem, in the guest room of a house, coming down from a mountain, around the walls of a city, in God’s mighty expanse, in His sanctuary, in bed, in jail.

• Variety of Focus: directed to the nations, directed to one another, directed to a trou-bled king, directed to pagan kings, directed to all the earth, directed to God.

• Variety of Content: teach-ing or delineating truth, with much content or with light refl ections on one truth; prayer, petition, praise, personal testi-mony, exhortation, a profession of personal uprightness, using repetition.

• Variety of Occasions: the dedication of a wall, going before an army, accompanying off erings, at a feast, the anoint-ing of a king, during a new moon, during a full moon, in a

church service, bringing up the ark, eating the Passover supper, in a time of personal crisis.

• Variety of Times of Day: morning, evening, night, “from the rising of the sun to its setting.”

• Variety of Postures: stand-ing, going before an army, lifting hands, bowing down, kneeling.

• Variety of Moods: joy, solemn sound on the harp, chanting a lament.

Get the point? God’s Word is fi lled with so much variety when it comes to musical style, purpose, and manner. It makes sense that our creative Lord has asked His creatures to exercise great creativity in worship. He created a beautiful universe with endless variety—even each human being is unique, unlike any other. He longs to hear our unique praise—however creative and individual it may be—as long as it is the genuine outpouring of our heart. In all things, in all seasons, and in all ways praise your Maker, Redeemer, and Friend. It will please Him greatly!

How should we use music in church and in our daily life? God

could have inspired a writer to include in our Scriptures an authoritative order of ser-vice, including the songs to be sung, the instruments to be played, and the appropriate style to use. Just think of what churches would save on printed bulletins!

Instead, perhaps the most striking observation of biblical worship is its wealth of variety and few restrictions on form. Listen to the vast wardrobe from which biblical worship is clothed!

• Variety of Instruments: harps, stringed instruments,

horns, trumpets, loud-sound-ing cymbals, lyres, timbrels, tambourines, gittith, pipes.

• Variety of Volumes and Sounds: loud, like the sound of many waters, like the sound of thunder, like the sound of harpists, voices accompanied by instruments, shouting, loud instruments, a joyful noise.

• Variety of Worshipers:appointed singers and musi-cians, trained by a skillful instructor, organized by a chain of command, duets, all the people of the land led by singers and instruments, everything that hath breath.

• Variety of Manner: leap-ing, making merry, clapping, dancing, lifting hands in the

Yummy Granola14 c. quick oats2½ c. sliced almonds3 c. dried cranberries3 c. coconut2 c. wheat germ1 c. Florida Crystals sugar2 c. water1 c. canola oil2 Tbsp. vanilla1 Tbsp. maple fl avoring

Mix dry ingredients together. Whisk wet ingredients and add to the dry until mixture is moist. Spread in two 9 × 13 inch pans. Bake at 200°F for 8 hours, stirring every two hours. Let cool before serving

Ou ch !” I e xc l a i m e d with a sigh, “That’s one painful sounding

chord; it also must be my one hundred and tenth mistake.”

My latest piano book had some beautiful songs in it, but my blunders had a way of disguising their beauty very effectively.

Maybe I missed a f lat. I checked the notes and tried once more.

“Michelle, are you sure that’s right?” Mom’s voice wafted in from the kitchen. “It sounds a little off to me.”

“I’m not sure; the note sounds all wrong, but, accord-ing to the sheet music, it’s correct. Could it be the book’s error instead of mine for a change?” I replied, somewhat frustrated, and scrutinized the page again.

Deciding to try for a less aggravating chord, I began

experimenting. Ah , s o mu ch b e t t e r ! I

thought as I settled on the perfect chord. This piece should sound immensely better now without that error.

Much to my surprise, how-ever, the next chord sounded complete ly out of place . “Whatever could be wrong?” I asked aloud. “That one was equally unpleasant.”

As I looked back at the first “inaccurate” chord, a thought occurred to me. “I wonder if. . . .”

I replayed the offending chord and added the next one, which had previously been so out of place, and—wonder of wonders—they became totally and completely harmonious! The notes had been right all along; I had played them cor-rectly, and the sheet music certainly wasn’t a misprint. The problem was simply that

I had stopped too quickly in an effort to fix a predicament that didn’t even need fixing! If I had continued by adding the next note, the harmony would have been obvious.

Sometimes we do the same with life; as soon as a “sour note” comes our way, we begin to wonder if perhaps our life’s “sheet music” has a misprint. We wonder if God might have made a mistake this time; after all, a slip-up is bound to happen sometime, isn’t it?

What is often overlooked is that it may not be a slip-up at all. Not on God’s part, nor on ours. The “chord” is correct.The only mistake is when we get caught up in trying to fix or understand the inharmoni-ous chord. We think we can replace it with another, only to find, as life’s song contin-ues, that the following events

will require the harsh chord in order to be in harmony.

Unfortunately, we do the same when a dissonant note sounds in someone else’s life. Instead of waiting to see what chord God may bring into play next, we try to find all the other chords that would be better suited to their song. So often Christians will try to fix another’s erroneous note that the Master knows is no error at all! Only the future will reveal the harmony that He has in mind.

Certainly, we will make mistakes; life’s song is much too complex for even the most advanced. But before we label every sour note as inaccurate, and try to replace it with our own, let’s ask the Composer; He may say to keep playing. The next notes in life’s song might harmonize with the offending ones perfectly!
