As many of you will be aware, this academic year teachers have been planning their lessons using the DR ICE model. DR ICE is an acronym for 5 features that should be every lesson or series of lessons. Ice Skating Both the Yr8s & Yr9s have been given the opportunity to ice skate over the past few weeks. However, with interest being so high, this has been extended into the New Year. The same process applies as before, with the pupils missing out on Thursday's session being given priority for the first session back. Happy Xmas and Happy New Year to all in Year 10/. What a Year ! I may have mentioned in numerous assemblies, what a fantastic start you have all made to life in KS4. Your attitude to work, your attendance, your uniform and your identity as a Year group is outstanding. All of the KS4 team are encouraged by this and we are all proud of each and every one of you. The hard work, commitment and dedication to your learning will have to be maintained in the New Year and beyond. Remember, we are here to support you with this. Celebration Assembly on Tuesday was great. So many of you were recognised for your hard work, progress and achievements in lessons. Those of you with 100% attendance, approx 60 of you, were celebrated for this. Tutors nominated their 'Outstanding,' and 'Most Improved,' tutee awards and our Half Termly quiz cup was awarded to ELM yet again! OAK lost out by half a point ! Congratulations to 10 ELM and Miss Lopez for the best tutor group attendance 97.2%, ROWAN in second with 96.7% and in third were our students from MAPLE with 96.6%. This is outstand-ing, we must all work hard to reach these standards. Congratulations goes to Christian Cox (10 ASH) who has won a gold medal at the recent Rich-mond Gymnastics competition for his Tumbling Routine. Well Done Christian ! When we return in the New Year, there will be a drive on punctuality and uniform across the Key Stage. All students are expected in school on time and looking smart each and every day. The vast majority of Year 10 meet this criteria already but we are all in this together, so please can any students who have been late several times or attended school in inappropriate uniform at any point this half term, ensure this is addressed immediately. Year 11 MFL Student Conferences WE HAVE EXTENDED THE PROVISIONAL BOOKING FOR THESE CONFERENCES. PLEASE PAY ONLINE BY DECEMBER 20th FOR SPANISH AND JANUARY 10th FOR FRENCH We have booked places on a Spanish (January 31st) and French (March 5th) Student Conference in London to help the students prepare for their listening and reading exams in May as well as any controlled assessment tasks that need repeating. The cost is £20 per student plus travel costs (TBC) and we need numbers by the date above. This is a great opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the language with a real exam focus. An extremely busy term with the highest of expectations has passed and this will continue into the New Year. Your Trial Examinations were a success and the results of these will be available on Thursday 9th January. I am sure this will be a positive experience for you all. In areas where you may be disappointed with your result, the focus must be to prioritise your studies over anything else and attend all available booster and catch up sessions to give you the best chances of achieving the best possible outcomes in the summer. We had our Xmas Celebration Assembly this week and this was great. It enabled the Year group and tutor team to share in everyone's success' and achievements this term. Subject awards for Progress, Achievement and Effort were presented to nominated students. There were also special awards for those students currently on 100% attendance and, of course, the traditional Quiz Cup was awarded. This time it was 11 CEDAR who were victorious. Well done to Mr Hurley and his band of tutees! The tutor group with the highest attendance this term is 11ASH with an overall figure of 97.1%. 11 ELM were a close second with 96.6% and 11 WILLOW third with a much improved 95.3% on last year. A most important date for your diary is our Year 11 Parents' Consultation Evening. This takes place on THURSDAY 16TH JANUARY. Students have already been handed letters and these have also been posted home. Please ensure you attend this event and return reply slips to tutors asap. Trial exam results will be discussed as well as the next steps for each student. 2014 will also be a time to look forward to your PROM, your RECORD OF ACHIEVEMENT celebration as well as making contributions to your Leavers Yearbook and Hoodies. Sixth Form Update
As the builders arrive and depart in the dark, so the work continues to ensure our building will be ready to accommodate the students in September. We have now received beyond the milestone of 100 ac-ceptances of a place to our school sixth form which confirms your confidence in our exciting and de-manding place to prepare for University. We continue to work hard to ensure your expectations are fully justified. In recent weeks we have continued to build excellent relationships with local businesses and activities, with our partner schools and with universities. We are meeting with local providers for our enrichment planning, we are meeting with national organisations to develop a programme of student advice and guidance, alongside some very innovative software packages to support the university decision-making and application process. We visited St. Mary‟s University for a taster session in Psychology at which stu-dents were invited to explore a campus and then participate, actively with students from other schools, in an experiment about perception and retention. Why is it that some of us can learn more effectively in an abstract manner and others need theory to be grounded in meaningful contexts? It was a useful visit with many more to follow. We have also been to Westminster at the Queen Elizabeth Conference Centre for a conference about applying for Russell Group Universities and Oxbridge. The visit was very useful and informative and as well as securing contacts for visits to King‟s University and Oxbridge Universities later in the year, our students took the time to honour the statue of Nelson Mandela in Parliament Square:

Snr Citizen Christmas Party : 13 December 2013
As you are aware, we held our annual party for the local senior citizens of Ham/Richmond on Friday 13 December. As usual this was well attended and a great success. VPA students provided the entertainment for the afternoon. As well as providing food and refreshments, there was a free raffle and every attendee received a Christmas goodie bag. Below are just a couple of messages we have received from senior citizens who attended, which we thought we would share with you:

Concerts. The Jazz Orchestra, Choir (Encore), Panto cast and KS4 Performing Arts groups were all out-standing. They played to a packed hall over two nights and then again for the OAP Christmas Tea Party. I would also like to thank the VPA staff who went above and beyond the call of duty, rehearsing and pre-paring students for the series of concerts. Thank you also to all the parents who supported these events and encouraged their children to take part and make it a hugely successful event.

Art (Ms Jennings) Year 11 GCSE Art Students If Year 11 GCSE Art students wish to take a project sketchbook home then they must inform Ms Jennings which sketchbook they are taking.
Year 9 Arts Award project The Year 9 Arts Award project started very successfully this week with 19 students going on a trip to Kingston Museum and Richmond Museum. Students had the opportunity to look around both little muse-ums, looking at the exhibitions of art work and artefacts. They then made observational drawings of an artist's work displayed in Kingston Museum. The students really enjoyed the experience and were able to look at valuable art works and handle museum objects dating back to the Roman times. This is all part of their preparation to complete the Bronze Arts Award and they will attend another workshop at Orleans House Gallery with the artist, Hazel Hughes. There will be a number of workshops here at Grey Court starting in January with Hazel inspiring them to make 3D objects and other interesting art works. The project is being filmed to record their experience and the journey they made to gain a Bronze Award.

Achievement Kirsty Milligan (9E) Kirsty recently came 4th in the London Schools Trampoline Competition, narrowly missing out on representing London at the zonal competition. The top 3 go to the next stage. However, Kirsty has since broken her arm as a result of changing her mind on a move whilst upside down in mid air, we wish you a speedy recovery Kirsty. FREE BASKETBALL COACHING at Grey Court Richmond Knights (official basketball provider for the borough) Every Friday for 8 weeks, 3-4pm with Richmond Knights. Year 10/11 Richmond Borough Volleyball Final Team 1 (3rd) Team 2 (2nd) Victoria Willis-Sloanes Zoe Cramp Sabina Culver Libby Brown Samedina Curaj Abby Tricker Saoirse Atkhar Mabel Baxter Dalrymple The girls competed in the final of the Richmond Borough Volleyball competition this Tuesday at Grey Court. Due to some last minute cancellations, the final consisted of just Grey Court and Orleans Park. The girls in blue knew from previous fixtures that this was going to be a hard contest, but were ready to compete for the title. The competition was very close, with both schools displaying some superb volley-ball. Team 1 worked excellently as a team and were unlucky not to beat their fellow Grey Court pupils. After some superb volleyball, Team 1 finished a respectable 3rd and were praised for their team spirit and efforts. Team 2 also had an excellent competition. The girls were determined to come away with the Bor-ough title and despite their efforts, narrowly missed out to Orleans. A bit of training and hard work and I have no doubt these girls will be the team to watch in the future. Well done Grey Court!!! :)
Year 7 Girls Sports hall Athletics v Gumley Grey Court (1st) Team Isabella Scuotto Francesca Cardillo-Zallow Nellwyn Ackroyd Becca Lawn Orla Harrison Donalda Draga Marley Ward Edie Goodall The Grey Court girls competed in a friendly Sports Hall Athletics competition against Gumley this Mon-day. After previously winning the first round of the Borough Competition the Grey Court girls were feeling the pressure. Gumley are considered to be one of the strongest schools within the Hounslow Borough with both their year 7 and 8 girls teams reaching the South West London Finals. Grey Court began the competition well and were quickly proving the stronger team. Some excellent individual performances from Becca Lawn in the 4 lap, Isabella Scuotta in the vertical jump, Orla Harrison in the 6 lap , Nellwyn and Francesca in the 8 lap, and Donalda, Marley and Edie in their respected events. Another superb per-formance by their girls and great preparation for round two of the Borough competition. Well done.

Year 7 Rugby League London Area Quarter Final Grey Court 4 : Hinchley Wood 24
On Wednesday 18
th December, the Year 7 boys played their London area quarter final
at home against Hinchley Wood. The team started very well and Charles Clark and Max Hamdi were prominent with early runs for Grey Court. Unfortunately, we gifted Hinchley Wood a couple through poor tackling and made the match more difficult for ourselves trying to force the game too much. We reduced the deficit late in the first half with a very good try by Billy Hayes. We worked hard as a team in the second half, but lacked the cutting edge to break them down and ultimately conceded again with some weak tackling. The boys worked hard but we have a lot of areas to work on. Ethan Ball, Oliver Cole-man, Charlie Clark and Max Hamdi were the stand out performers for the team.
Training starts again on Thursday 9th January, 3 -4pm.

Year 9 Rugby Union Grey Court 12 : Ewell Castle 33 After winning the Middlesex Plate Final at Saracens, it was back to the school field the following week to play Ewell Castle. The opposition had arrived early with a big squad of big players and were highly in-centivised to produce a big performance. With 3 of our forwards away (including often unsung heroes Gabriel Downer and Gabriel Venter), the remaining Grey Court's forwards seemed to lack motivation and even the will to effectively compete for first phase ball. This was to be a salutary lesson and one which we will again all learn from. Our failure to compete effectively as a pack led to disappointing turnovers, forward lost ball & four unanswered op-position tries. Set against this disappointing first half an hour of rugby, it speaks volumes of the character of this Grey Court team - and several key players - that they didn't just capitulate. A rare infringement by the opposition near their own 22 line saw a pop pass to Vice-Captain Jack Coombs, who started the Grey Court fight back to sporting dignity with a sprint speed crash-ball that saw him power through the heart of the Ewell forward pack to score. At half-time, disappointment had given way to hurt pride, so it was great to see our lads channel this emotion and noticeably step up their game. First Rhodri Curtis started tackling anew, then an eyebrow-raising superb double hit from both Shaun Parkes and simultaneously Andreas Scuotto saw both com-prehensively send their opposition forward ball carrier dumped in fast reverse. Antony Al-Hachache then surpassed all his home team players with a succession of heroic tackles. With almost a disregard for his own wellbeing, Antony drew the admiration of supporting parents with his commitment to almost single-handedly arrest threatening opposition attacks. To Antony's credit, his team mates followed his example and Ewell scored only once more. Stung into action, Art Geraghty began to run a wide arc then cut in to score then convert, before the game finished with honours even in the second half. Man of the Match: Antony Al-Hachache Whilst a 5 try to 2 home loss isn't really a true reflection of how far this team has progressed this season, it's a reminder that to be the best we can be, every single player in our squad needs to focus on 100% effort & commitment from warm-up right through to the final whistle. In sport, as in life, if we just go through the motions, we'll be underwhelmed by outcomes. The challenge is to put disappointment be-hind us and commit to showing just our very best in future. In every game. To then become the best we can be... Knowing the true character and ability of this special Yr9 team, I can't wait for the return match with Ewell Castle in 2014! Dear Parent/Carer,
‘A View from the Bridge’ is on at the New Vic Theatre in Waterloo from 2nd
April to 24th
May. Year 11
students are currently studying this in preparation for their GCSE English Literature exam. The play is
rarely shown and this is a fantastic opportunity for your son/daughter to see it in performance.
Unfortunately, the school is not allowed to book more than four tickets due to demand from schools (see
http://www.youngvic.org/guidelines).
The Young Vic does offer reduced priced tickets for people under 25 and I would encourage your
son/daughter to try to get a ticket – they are selling out very quickly.
The English department will be going to the evening performance Friday April 25th
