George Edwin (Ned) Bryant
Today my grandfather "Grumpy" has been
gone 20 years. The time has just flown by.
I still remember the many things we did
together and I will treasure those memories in
my heart. To this day I continue to teach
children "52 pick up" which they give the
same mortified look on their faces as I gave to
you haha! Miss you Grumpy! ❤ ❤❤❤❤❤

VICTORIA
THIS week’s review of litters from the Victorian Litter
Registrations list for the week ending 25 April, starts
with two litters by Australia’s leading sire, Barcia Bale
(March 2010 Go Wild Teddy x Princess Bale).
Ripplebrook breeder, Arend Gringhuis, has the
first of the two litters, which unfortunately has just the
one dog and one bitch pup, from the beautifully bred
bitch, Miss Kadia (November 2013 Kinloch Brae* x
Absolute Stunna), whose dam is by Bombastic Shiraz x
Regal Blaze (Pure Octane x Sound Lee).
She is from her dam’s only litter file, which is an
outstanding litter of seven named, which includes
Absolute Silence, Bells Are Ringin, Blazin Bomber,
Kinloch Stunna, Ring The Bell and Stunning Success.
Apart from Kinloch Stunna, who raced five times
without winning, the others were all good winners, who
just on 100 races between them.
Miss Kadia raced 47 times for seven wins and 20
placings, winning three times over 520 metres at
Cranbourne (30.17), twice over 515 metres at Sandown
(29.50) and also over 400 metres at Warragul (23.18)
and 395 metres at Traralgon.
Bells Are Ringin won the Group 1 Sandown Cup,
Blazin Bomber won the Group 3 Speed Star and Group
3 Cranbourne Puppy Classic, and Ring The Bell won the
Group 1 National Distance Title and the Group 3
Summer Cup.
Certainly plenty to like about these two well bred
youngsters, Arend, and good luck with them.

GRV News
Horsham on track for re-opening
Victoria’s full suite of greyhound racetracks will
soon be operational once again with the redevelopment
of Horsham now in the final stages.
GRV has joined forces with Sydney’s University of
Technology during the redevelopment in a bid to ensure
all design factors have been properly taken into account
with respect to track safety and greyhound welfare.
“It’s exciting that we’re at the pointy end of the
redevelopment and we’re looking like starting trials in
late May or early June, with a view to possibly
reopening for racing sometime later in June,” GRV’s
Racing Manager, Scott Robins said.
“We are about to install the rail, and once that is in
place it will really start to look like a racetrack again.”
The redevelopment has come about following a safety
audit which saw racing cease at the venue since
October. While the project is not a complete new track
as such, much of the infrastructure has been replaced
making it a virtual brand new build.
Sand from Lake Burrumbeet (near Ballarat), which has
long been the preferred surface on Victoria’s greyhound
racetracks for welfare and maintenance reasons, is
being stockpiled to be used as the surface at Horsham,
while there are several other key safety features.
“Every aspect of this redevelopment has a science
overlay to it, with welfare being the overriding priority.
We’re widening the track and improving the transitions
with the camber on the bends being increased to about
10 per cent, which is what science tells us is the most
comfortable degree for the greyhounds, so we expect
the dogs to get a nice and smooth transition into the
turns,”Robins said.
Horsham will initially race over two distances – 410
metres (drop on boxes) and 485 metres – with a
provision for a third distance of around 675 metres to
potentially be instated in the future. The club will also
have puppy boxes over 310 metres for trialling
purposes.

we’d love to hear from you.
STAYERS. Editor,
Just by way of expanding on my earlier plea for more
attention to stamina and staying stock, I made some
comparisons between performances over 715m at
Sandown on 4 May and 11 May in two higher grade
races (including the Lizrene).
Except where stated, both runs were over
Sandown 715m. All runners had plenty of past
experience over 700m-plus.
My reason for doing that is that 7-day breaks have
become almost standard for stayers these days –
sometimes enforced by heat and final programming,
sometimes at the trainer’s choice – and it is clear that
most dogs have trouble burning the candle at both ends.

6. Ebby Ripper -0.26*
7. Azurite +0.48 (Earlier run converted from
Meadows 725m)
8. Allen Lottery +0.33
*In both these cases the dog was severely hampered in
its previous run.
Similar checks in past years have revealed much
the same story. Clearly, their performance degrades
when backing up too quickly. Many must be running on
their store of reserves, doubly so when lower class dogs
are involved.
Certainly, we cannot expect dogs to run like
machines. Nevertheless, the long term consistency of
results like these poses serious questions.
None of these dogs had known staying sires –
although you might argue about Mogambo (= Teddy
Monelli, which led and faded). Two were from imported
sires while the lightly raced Barcia Bale was responsible
for five of the 16, including one winner (Dundee
Calypso).
Incidentally, winning times in all four races being
considered were some 12-15 lengths outside the track
record.

SA coursing dates until 30 June are listed below.
The remaining dates for July – September will follow
once allocated.
We start off our season by running 4-dog stakes – which
appeases the track enthusiasts who do not wish to put
their dogs in an 8-dog stake as they don’t believe they
can run 3 times in the one day, even though it should be
remembered that its only 2 dogs that have 3 runs, and
this is certainly not a problem in Victoria.

Longwood Coursing Sunday 14 May Sue Delaney
It was a beautiful day, a great meeting.
The Longwood Club were great hosts for the Werribee
Coursing Club.
Noel Ryan Memorial Werribee Cup – Johnnie Red with
his connections & the Ryan family.
Johnnie Red coursed brilliantly over the day winning
all events by many lengths. Let’s hope Russell
continues to keep him sound as he’s my tip for the
Waterloo. ‘for what it’s worth’ LOL.
And now have a brand new tower for the race caller
and officials.

Special Tribute
George Edwin (Ned) Bryant 1921-1997
Neil Brown
George Edwin (Ned) Bryant was a loveable larrikin.
He was considered the Bart Cummings of
greyhound training ranks and was also one of
Australia's most respected canine chiropractors.
Bryant was only 14 years old when he caught the
greyhound racing bug.
"The earliest influences on his career were trainer
Harry Ralston, who lived just up the road in West
Dandenong, and legendary breeder Rod Deakin," said
his son, John. "
Dad & Rod became mates in the late 1950s. They
loved a bet and would often attend greyhound meetings
at White City and North Melbourne."
Bryant owned a car dealership in Dandenong for
many years while establishing his reputation as the
sport?s "Silver Fox".
His "Silver Fox" sobriquet was an obvious
reference to legendary Australian tennis coach, Harry
Hopman, who pulled off many tactical master strokes
as non-playing captain for Australia in Davis Cup ties
during the 1950s and 1960s.
Ironically, Bryant - like his tennis counterpart -
was a master tactician who turned greyhound training
into an art form.
In a distinguished 50-year association with
greyhound racing, Bryant won virtually every major
feature on the Victorian greyhound racing calendar with
his canine protégés.
Bryant considered the 1985 Melbourne Cup
quinella (Sydney Dingaan-Shining Chariot) and 1991
Australian Cup (Franklin Deano) his highest training
achievements.
Also rating among his list of megastars were
Blackwood Earl, Blue Lightning, Currency Lass,
Denison Miss, Grand Sapper, Jefferson, Quatro, Regal
Hermes, Rod?s Advice, Rumpus Pappa, Shamrock
Flight, Summer Jade, Supplier, Tesoro Mio, World
Vision, Wynlee Wonder and Yootha Joy.

with Sydney Dingaan
"He also raced Irish Temptress, the dam of the
immortal Bold Trease who he and mum (Maureen)
bred," John said.
Bryant was also one of the sport?s most in-
demand canine chiropractors. "At first it was 'trial and
error', and he was only charging $1 per greyhound,"
John said.
"He?d manipulate hundreds of greyhounds a
week, with trainers travelling from as far away as
Albury to have their greyhounds checked at his
Cranbourne home."
A long-time committeeman at Cranbourne
Greyhound Racing Club, Bryant retired from training
after winning the 1991 Australian Cup with Franklin
Deano under emotional and almost tragic
circumstances.
Only nine days prior to the cup final, Bryant was
fighting for his life in Dandenong hospital?s intensive
care unit after suffering a ruptured aorta in a car
accident.
He underwent an emergency five-hour operation
and was reported to have only a 50/50 chance of
surviving.
He didn't know the cup result until midnight that
evening as he fell asleep after listening to only half the
race.
In 1995, the Melbourne Greyhound Racing
Association paid tribute to Bryant.
Hosted by the Silver Chief Club, almost 200
guests honoured a legend of the sport in a 'Roast to Ned
Bryant' night.

Ned Bryant Tribute - continued
At the time, an emotional Bryant told Olympic Park's
packed Yarra Room that he would always value the
friendships and treasure the memories he had derived
from greyhound racing. "
It (greyhound racing) has really been my life and
I’ve made some wonderful friends," he said. "I love the
sport; it’s as simple as that."
Ned was guest of honour at his roast held at
Olympic Park
In recent years, the Greyhound Racing Victoria
(GRV) Board has ensured the legacy of Bryant - who
served in the nation's armed forces during WWII on the
Kokoda Track in Papau New Guinea - will long be
remembered.
GRV initiated the Ned Bryant ?Silver Fox? award,
which is presented annually to a person (under 35 years
of age) for showing outstanding potential in the training,
breeding and promotion of greyhound racing.
"The industry needs characters, and dad's induction
into the Victorian greyhound racing Hall of Fame is
fantastic," John said. "
He wanted to succeed in the sport, and he wanted
to impart his knowledge."
Sadly, on May 18, 1997 - the man they called the
"Silver Fox" - passed away, aged 76.
The people and greyhounds inducted into the
Victorian greyhound racing Hall of Fame have been
recognised for their excellence, integrity, consistency,
longevity and overall contribution to the industry.
We hope you enjoy the opportunity to learn more
about the contribution these wonderful people and
greyhounds have made to this great industry.

Editor’s tribute:
In the ‘Dedication’ in my 1997 book, ‘Victorian
Metropolitan Breeding Statistics’, released only
months after Ned passed away, I wrote:
The Silver Fox was a loveable larrikin who was 76 years
old when he died earlier this year.
My association with Ned started more than 34
years ago, and after my Father died in the early 1960’s, it
was Ned Bryant, his lovely wife, Maureen, and their
children who were to give much comfort.
On the greyhound racing side of Ned’s life, I need
to say nothing I could add that I haven’t already said
many times before.
All I need to say here, is what a great man Ned
Bryant was, and how much he did for me in the early
years.

BRED TO WIN Our weekly selection of
greyhounds to follow, based on
their breeding and recent
performances.
SISCO ROCCO
Red fawn dog, October 2015, Barcia Bale x Sisco
Power, raced and trained by John Galea at Brookfield.
Raced 19 times for six placings and had no luck
when fourth from box six over 515 metres at Sandown
(SAP) on 14 May.
Was beaten only 2.3 lengths in the race won by
Chantilly Beauty (30.50).
Four starts prior to that run had produced two
placings there and is racing consistently without much
luck at the moment.
DR. YUKI
Black dog, March 2014 Enry Walt x Dr. Flojoe, raced
by the Doctor’s Kennels Syndicate and trained at
Darruman by Judith McMahon.
Lightly raced with just six starts for one win and
one placing.
Won from box one over 525 metres at Traralgon
(30.80) on 20 February, before sixth from box one over
520 metres at Cranbourne on 6 May.
Stepped up in class and distance when third from
box two over 595 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 14 May,
beaten 2.4 lengths in the race won by Mr. Bad Example
(35.28).
RENEW
Black dog, January 2015 Mogambo x Lucy Wires.
Raced by Martin Frankovic and trained at Newcomb by
Robert Tartaglia.
Raced 11 times now for three placings and is
gradually building up in distance as damline suggests
he’ll need.
Placed three times over 515 metres at Sandown
(SAP) from 23 April to 7 May before finding trouble
when sixth there from box two on 11 May.
Stepped up to 595 metres there on 14 May, from
box eight and didn’t have a lot of luck when fifth in the
race won by Paradiso Lass (34.82), beaten by 9.3
lengths.
Sure to improve with more experience over the
distance.
