What's in the event programme then?

The World Record Attemptwin in our luxury raffleDo Greyhounds Need Grooming?a word from our sponsorsthe walk map and routedogs dine in style with scissalthinking of adopting?training your hound for lifegreyhounds looking for a homethank you to...

Back in 2011 on a cold winter’s day outside a well known supermarket, founder of The Greyhound Sanctuary, Sally Slater and Maria Gray, a loyal supporter of the charity, were not having much luck with the usual charity collection.

“We need to do something big next year, something that will really show that we need to help these dogs... What about breaking a world record or something?” Suggested Maria. “If you can find one we could do... go for it!” replied Sally.

So in January 2012 we decided to attempt this seemingly impossible feat and try to gather as many greyhounds from around the country as we could. It quickly became clear that this was not just another fundraiser but something that would actually make the country sit up and take notice. Something that would give greyhounds a voice.

So 9 months on here we are. Let’s hope you all turned up and that you all had a wonderful time. And most importantly, let’s hope we break that record!!!

Welcome!Thank you for coming to Escot and being involved in one of the most ambitious greyhound fundraisers ever! It has been a long 9 months to get here but today might just be the day that greyhounds finally get the worlds attention by breaking a Guinness World Record.

The big World Record Attempt

How it Works...

Why are we all here?

The walk explained in easy to follow steps

As most of you may or may not know, greyhounds are the fastest dogs on the planet, reaching speeds of up to 45mph. This also makes them one of the most exploited dogs in the world too. Whether or not your viewpoint is ‘for’ or ‘against’ greyhound racing, the fact remains that a great number of these beautifully good natured dogs are left without a place to call home or someone to show them the kindness they deserve.

Many people will share their views with you today and everyone is entitled to them, but this event is not about the politics involved surrounding the issue, it is about showcasing the greyhound (and all sighthounds) as the perfect pet and dispelling some of the myths about them. Many will not know that a greyhound is a couch potato and needs no more exercise than any other dog, nor will they know they that are very affectionate and good with families of all ages. By breaking a Guinness World Record we are aiming to highlight the need to rescue and rehome greyhounds and lurchers, raise money for the charities that facilitate this and gain national and worldwide media attention for the cause.

There are hundreds of rescue centres throughout the country and around the globe, all are dedicated to giving these dogs a loving home. Together we can all make a difference.

For those walking a greyhound you will need to register and get your unique numbered bib and ticket. Remember to keep hold of your ticket on the walk and place the smaller portion of the ticket in the buckets provided on completion of the walk. This will help us confirm our final total. The route will be clearly marked with signs and marshalls will lead and follow everyone around the course. Keep all dogs on a lead and please pick up ‘gifts’ they leave behind. The walk is three miles in order to break the record under Guinness Rules.

(Just a few of the many charities & organisations involved in greyhound rescue)

Things to Do!

Things to Win!

Relax and enjoy the day...

Try your luck for a good cause

Our Luxury Raffle gives you the chance to win some great prizes for just £1 per ticket. All the money raised will add to the final total and is all for a grey’t cause!

On Offer is a Champagne Hot Air Balloon Flight, a stylish Scissal designer diner, 3 months supply of food for your hound, a doggy hamper from Pets at Home, a meal for two at The Greyhound Inn and a Sea Kayaking day trip from SKSW. Plus many brilliant runner up prizes from Kong!

We can’t start the world record walk until every greyhound is registered. We aim to do this as quickly as we can so please do bear with us while we make sure all the formalities are done correctly in order for us to officially break the record.

While we do this you have time to relax, enjoy the day and do a little retail therapy in aid of a good cause.

Escot is the natural place for nature lovers. Spend time having a picnic in the beautiful grounds or visit the Coach House Restaurant for tea, coffee, cakes and hot food. Take a stroll around the Amazing Maze (but make sure you find your way out before we start!) or for fun with the kids visit the Play Barn or Forest Leap.

There will be many stalls offering greyhound goodies such as beds, coats and collars as well as charity merchandise such as T-shirts, keyrings, pens, pads and greeting cards.

Enjoy an Ice Cream to cool down with your dog or pamper your pooch with Groomed to Pawfection who will be doing mobile grooming on site.

It is often thought that Greyhounds don’t need grooming or certainly not the need to go to a professional groomer, as it is

nothing more than a quick brush at the very most - oh how wrong. OK, they are not high maintenance but as with any dog, grooming is a must and all dogs benefit greatly from regular grooming, just having that contact with a person is a benefit. It is a way to notice changes in your dogs

health like any lumps, pain, unwanted visitors on your dog such as ticks and fleas. Greyhounds can also be prone to dandruff, dry skin patches and bald spots.

Using the right brush is important. A hound mitt, or/and a rubber brush is great and you can use this in the bath as well. A natural boar bristle brush is perfect for the greyhound. Some greyhounds do carry a thick winter undercoat and getting that out is of benefit to your dog and your home.

Using high quality shampoo (that does not mean the most expensive this does not make a shampoo high quality) is important, but just as important is getting all the shampoo out.

So what can a professional groomer do that I can’t do at home? I guess you could do it all if you have the right equipment and the training to use it all. Here at Groomed to Pawfection we have a

couple of Greyhounds that come in. Besides starting with a big fuss made of them, we always give them a quick health check running hands all over the body feeling for any changes since their last visit, or if new findings we record this and let the owner know. We clean and check their ears - funny as they always seem to be a potato field! Give teeth a nice brush for some lovely

smelling fresh breath. Nails trimmed and all pads checked. Now for the brush - never underestimate how much dead hair you can get out of a greyhound, plus they all love it.

Then ready for the bath – we use only two brands of shampoo Animology and Animal Health Care, both high quality and natural, plus great prices for customers to buy and used by professional dog exhibitors. Selecting the right shampoo is important and it can change each visit. They love a massage while having a nice warm shower. Even the drying is not just a towel - if suitable for the dog we will use our high velocity dryer to make sure the water is out of the coat. This also it helps remove further dead hair. Once dried it does not stop…next comes

the application of a suitable oil/lotion and finally a lovely refreshing spray to keep that just groomed smell.

In support of the Greyhound World Record Groomed to Pawfection will be attending and offering a selection of grooming services:

Quick 5min brush and fresh spray £3Ear clean £1Nail trim £2.00Mouth fresher £1.00Tick removal 50p a tick

Full event groom – 5min brush, ears, nails, mouth fresher, a dry shampoo, brush and a fresh spray £10

Half of all monies from the grooming on the day will go to the organisers to be given to the chosen charities.

Burgess Supadog is delighted to sponsor the Greyhound World Record attempt. Supadog Brand Manager

Richard Rockett comments, “This really is a fantastic and worthwhile event. At Burgess Pet Care we are committed to the health and welfare of greyhounds and lurchers, and as soon as we heard about this event we wanted to get involved. Burgess has been supporting greyhound and lurcher rescue centres for a number of years, with 20p from every sack of food donated to the Supadog Greyhound and Lurcher Fund. Last year alone we donated over £5000 to greyhound rescue centres. Sadly far too many of these wonderful animals have had a far from happy start in life. Many are left unwanted and abandoned. The lucky ones eventually reach the safe haven of a rescue centre before finding their loving forever homes. These rescue centres play an invaluable role by providing the care needed to bring these dogs back to full health, but every dog needs a loving home willing to take them in. That’s where events like this come in, helping to raise awareness of the plight of these dogs and to educate the public about what fantastic pets they really are.”

As well as being committed to helping these dogs find their forever homes, Burgess Supadog are also the makers of the UK’s only greyhound and lurcher food designed specifically for pets. Priced at £17.99 for a 12.5kg sack, it contains glucosamine for stiff and tired joints; Omega 3 for a shiny coat, healthy skin and to help with temperature regulation; prebiotics to aid digestive health; and a lower protein level of 17% as required by pet greyhounds and lurchers. It’s also free from artificial colours and flavourings and has no added

preservatives. Richard says “We talk to a lot of greyhound owners at a range of shows through the year, and the feedback we get on this product is fantastic. It’s really heartening to know that the product works and the dogs enjoy it, because often these dogs have delicate digestive systems and struggle to find a food which agrees with them”.

Supadog Greyhound and Lurcher is widely available at Pets at Home and all good pet stores. It is also available online at burgesspetcare.co.uk or Amazon.co.uk.Richard finishes, “We’re looking forward

to meeting everyone on the day and have donated some fantastic prizes to be won in the raffle. It will be fantastic if together we can claim the world record, but one thing is for certain and that’s the positive impact this event will have on the awareness of what fantastic pets these dogs make.

The Greyhound Sanctuary is a Devon based charity established in 2007.

Its aims are to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome greyhounds and lurchers who have been neglected, abandoned or whose owners are no longer able to keep them.

The charity has the use of kennels at Kinnings Farm Boarding and Rescue Kennels. It is hoped to find homes for most of the greyhounds but, if for any reason they are not rehomable, we plan to provide a place of safety where they can live out the remainder of their lives in peace and safety.

The charity is run by a small group of Trustees and supported by a dedicated group of fund raisers and Friends of The Greyhound Sanctuary.

If you would like to become a Friend or help in any way we would love to hear from you. Please contact us by phone, email, letter or by twitter and facebook.

Greyhounds are possibly the most abused breed of dog. There are approximately 25,000 bred annually and large numbers are ‘retired’ from racing by the time they are 3 years old. The fate of many of these dogs is often grim, as, apart from being dumped and abandoned, they are often disposed of in horrific ways.

Greyhounds are very affectionate and are at their happiest when in the company of people. Temperaments range from sensitive to very outgoing with most falling into the middle ranges—sensible, sweet, happy and affectionate.

Unlike many breeds, there are very few differences between the temperaments of males and females. They are intelligent and independent thinkers, although this means they can adapt quickly to opening gates, rubbish bins and other places which are supposed to be greyhound free!

Dog Walk

If you’ve decided to extend your family by adopting a greyhound, there are some basics that you need to know so that you and your new addition can get off to a good start.

Most greyhounds that are looking for new homes will have been bred for racing, and many will not have lived in a home before. Your new family member may have only lived in a kennel and not be house trained.Everyday things in our homes will be completely alien to a greyhound and some adjustment and/or gentle introduction may be required.

Most greyhounds adapt to home life very quickly and without too much trouble, whilst some find the process very hard. It is not always possible to know what your greyhound has experienced, so predicting what they may or may not be comfortable with is not an easy task.

Once you have made your decision, there are things you can do to make life easier for your greyhound. Ensure you have a suitable bed for it, remembering that the concept of stairs may be alien, and place the bed accordingly. If you can take the blanket from the greyhounds kennel, this will have a familiar smell that may help to settle your dog.

It is worth remembering that greyhounds have a long thin tail that can easily sweep things off tables, and that their height makes them able to stand on their hind legs to investigate kitchen worktops.

The first few days in a new home are often the hardest and most stressful for any new pet, so be prepared for some accidents and disturbed nights! If your new pet isn’t house

trained, this can be tackled straight away. Make sure that your new pet is not left alone, then as soon as you see any sniffing or circling behaviour, encourage into the garden, and go out with them so you can see if they go or not. If they do go, then be sure to praise them straight after so they will pick up the idea. There may be a few accidents in the early days, but persistence and patience will pay off.

The most important thing is of course, to love your greyhound. Greyhounds are very affectionate and will often seek human interaction. This could mean that you may have to share your sofa or even your bed with them if (like us) you can’t face saying ‘no’ to those big beautiful eyes.

Claire is a long and loyal supporter of The Greyhound Sanctuary and is now with her fourth greyhound, Ellie. Claire’s advice is based on her own personal experiences over many years. Ellie (pictured) was scared of her own shadow when she was rescued but is now a very happy girl who is spoiled rotten and enjoys naps on her very own armchair.

Dog Training: An emotive topic, and one very much in the public eye currently. The UK government is

being urged to consider proposals to change the law regarding dogs, both in public and also the home environment, in regard to responsible dog ownership.Good dog training is so much more than

teaching “Fido” to sit, lay down or give a paw, as much as socialising is more than stopping your puppy wanting to attack or jump all over other dogs and their handlers. All dogs need obedience and social skills

training, even the placid Greyhound, if it is to stand a chance in an evolving human environment.

A common misconception is that puppies should not be trained before 6 months. They should in fact start training between 9 and 16 weeks, the absorbency stage in which they are “set-up” for life.Training should always be well structured

and delivered in a style and at a pace that both puppy and the owner is comfortable with. This avoids frustration, disappointment and an all too common lack of continuity of training. This can avoid future behavioural problems, which are all too often experienced by behaviourists and can lead to many dogs being rehomed unnecessarily due to breakdowns in the human / canine relationship.

When a dog is rehomed, it (and its new owners), will often require environmental adjustment training to facilitate a speedy re-settlement. This helps to avoid a recurrence of the problems for which it may have been rehomed in the first (or several) instance(s).One problem commonly seen in many

breeds including Greyhounds and Whippets is Separation Anxiety, affecting some

15% of the canine population of the UK. This is the most common behavioural problem encompassing barking, toileting and destruction problems exhibited by an affected dog. Very often this is compounded by an inappropriate, although understandable, response by an owner unaware of the cause of the problem. With patience and understanding, this most frustrating of behavioural issues is normally fully re-formable.

Toilet training is another problem commonly dealt with by trainers. In dogs other than puppies the problem is normally (but not exclusively) either a lack of understanding (by dog and owner), illness, or an anxiety disorder such as Separation Anxiety. However, owners also play a significant role in aiding toilet training and dealing with any “inappropriate elimination” already experienced. In our experience, playing down any accident (getting cross does not work nor does rubbing the dog’s nose in it) and cleaning-up with a non-chemical cleaner (a fresh-cut lemon works well) to disinfect the accident location works best.To avoid behaviour problems in dogs, dogs

need to understand how to live within our environment. They also require us owners to display strong, effective leadership skills in order to respect and hence trust us. In turn they become responsive instead of reactive.

Trevor is a qualified Professional Dog Training Instructor holding the National Dog Training Instructor Certificate (from CIDBT accredited to Middlesex University HE cert), Master Trainer with the Guild of Dog Trainers and an accredited member of the Canine & Feline Behaviour Association (CFBA) for more information visit www.wilddogz.co.uk
