WE HAVE HEARD FROM LOTS OF

YOUNG PEOPLE WHO TOLD US THEY

DON’T WANT TO BE TOLD “NOT TO

WEAR MAKE UP” BUT WANT TIPS ON

“HOW TO APPLY IT PROPERLY”. SO IF

YOU REALLY MUST WEAR IT, HERE’S

OUR GUIDE TO DOING IT CORRECTLY.

LIGHTEN UP:

Instead of foundation, why not opt for a

tinted moisturiser with some concealer

and powder or light bronzer? If you really

feel the need to wear foundation opt for a

light range suitable for teenage skin.

STAY AWAY FROM THE

DARK SIDE:Go for a shade which matches your own

skin tone, or if you cant match it go just

one one shade up. Never go dark!

DON’T RUB IT IN:

Never rub concealer in. Just put a bit

on the pad of your middle finger and

pat it in.

PLAY UP YOUR LIPS

OR YOUR EYES, NEVER

BOTH:If you are wearing heavy eye m

ake-up,

go for nude lips with just a bit of gloss. If

you prefer dramatic lips, keep your face

light with only a coat of mascara and stay

away from heavy blush.

DON’T CROSS THE LINE:

Never ever line lips in a darker colou

r

than your gloss or lipstick, it’s not a

good look!

LESS IS MORE:

Ever notice how some of your friends look

best with no make-up? No matter your

age, too much make-up makes you look

worse. Tone it down: All you really need is

a great mascara, concealer for b

lemishes,

gloss and a pop of blush in winter.

VASELINE IS YOUR BEST

FRIEND:It’s a cheap eye make-up remover as well

as great for fixing chapped, scaly lips.

INVEST IN GOOD

PRODUCTSAND TOOLS:

Don’t just buy products because they are

cheap, look for products which suit your

skin needs.

NEVER SKIP

SUNSCREEN:

Look for products with SPF protection –

most tinted moisturiser’s will have this.

ARCH APPEALTOP TIPS FOR ACHIEVINGTHE PERFECT BROWS!

STEP 1: Pull hair away from the face and remove any eye make-up so that you have a blank canvas.

STEP 2: Brush your brows to see which direction the hair grows – you will tweeze in that direction.

STEP 3: Remove stray hairs first. These are the ones that sit out in ‘no mans land’ nowhere near the brow.

STEP 4: Try not to tweeze the hairs near the bridge of your nose. These hairs are important and can dictate the shape of the eyebrow.

STEP 5: Take an eyebrow pencil and shade the shape you want over your brows. It should follow your natural line and compliment your face shape.

REMEMBER!Take your time and tweeze one hair at a time - pulling too many hairs at once could leave bald spots and not every hair always grows back.

IF IN DOUBT ASK A GLASGOW CLUB INSTRUCTOR.

THEY’RE HAPPY TO HELP YOU THROUGH YOUR

TRAINING PROGRAMME AND GIVE ADVICE ON THINGS

TO MAKE YOUR WORKOUT WORTHWHILE. GOOD LUCK!

1. HAVE A GOAL

Before you get started it’s important you know

why and what you’re doing it for. If you don’t you

could end up bored with no results.

2. NUTRITION

Fuel your body correctly or you’ll struggle to

fulfil your full potential, and what’s the point in

burning 300kcal on the cross trainer and then

having a Big Mac as soon as you leave the gym?

3. HYDRATION

Without water you won’t last long. Drink a good

size glass an hour prior to gym use (500ml) and

carry water with you. If you are training hard

sip small amounts often rather than large gulps

which leave you bloated.

4. WARM UP

Don’t start exercising like a maniac straight

away. Start by slowly raising the heart rate

gently for 5 mins. A rower is ideal for this as you

want to incorporate as many muscles and joints

as possible and get the heart pumping blood

round the whole body.

5. STRETCHThis is the most neglected area of fitn

ess. After

a short warm up stretch all the major muscle

groups you will be using in your session for 5-10

seconds. At the end of training your muscles are

warm so hold your stretch for 30-60 seconds to

increase your flexibility.

6. TECHNIQUE

Perform exercises as instructed and always try

to keep good posture. If something feels off it

probably is and a slight adjustment might make

all the difference.

7. DON’T FOCUS ON 1 AREA

Your body needs to have all your muscles worked

in order to maintain good postural alignment.

8. VARY YOUR TRAINING

Try to change something about your routine

slightly each time to help you progress.

9. RESTYour body needs rest days to reco

ver from the

training you’ve put it through. We recommend 2

days rest from hard training sessions and 1 day

rest from lighter sessions.

10. ENJOYHave fun and enjoy your training. Find a partner

who enjoys the same types of exercise as you

and push each other.

ROAD TO MALAWI CHALLENGE PROJECTA GROUP OF 12 YOUNG PEOPLE FROM THE GREATER EASTERHOUSE AREA ARE ON THEIR WAY TO MALAWI FOR 15 DAYS THIS OCTOBER.

Since December last year they have been running, cycling, swimming, sliding and packing bags to raise the £30,000 they need for their trip and will try to cover the distance between Glasgow and Malawi which is 5229 miles during the course of their fundraising events.

This project was identified through the evaluations of the successful Canaries Challenge sailing expedition. Some of the young people involved had indicated an interest in helping others.

After discussions with the young people they focused more specifically on helping young people from Malawi. They decided to take part in projects to see them refresh and re-invigorate a school building, provide sports coaching and peer education on health as well as learning about local customs in Malawi.

The Road to Malawi Challenge was officially launched in December 2011 at The Bridge in Easterhouse. To help the young people with their project, Fiona Lindsay (International Adventurer) was invited along to give the young people a motivational speech. The young people then went on to slide 36.75 miles on the Flume as a sponsored event.

This group are being supported by Glasgow Life staff who wish the young people every success in this venture!

For details of how you can support the challenge check out www.gridmag.co.uk for all the latest information.

QUALIFICATIONS

ARE CHANGING

32.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!

There is a whole lot of change going on in

the education system in Scotland. It’s called

Curriculum for Excellence.

It’s about bringing learning to life and life to

learning. This will make it more interesting,

exciting and relevant and sometimes take

lessons outside the classroom.

WILL IT AFFECT ME?

For pupils currently in S1 or S2 there will be

no more Standard Grades or Intermediates:

Standard Grades will stop and Intermediates will

be phased out – to be replaced by new National

4 and 5 qualifications.

Access levels, Higher and Advanced Higher will

be revised but remain.

Pupils currently in S3 and above will continue to

work towards the current National Qualifications.

WHEN WILL I SIT MY EXAMS?

The New Exams will now come in at S4, instead

of the course starting in S3.

The plan is that pupils will no longer choose

subjects at the end of S2. In S3 pupils may

choose subjects for S4, but they will continue

to study a full range of subjects throughout S3.

THE LEVELS OF

QUALIFICATIONS

ON OFFER WILL BE:

ACCESS 1

ACCESS 2

ACCESS 3 equivalent to

Standard Grade Foundation

NATIONAL 4 equivalent to

Standard Grade General

or Intermediate 1

NATIONAL 5 equivalent to

Standard Grade Credit

or Intermediate 2

HIGHER

ADVANCED HIGHER

HOW WILL THE NEW

QUALIFICATIONS BE GRADED?

Courses will continue to contain work which is

assessed and marked throughout the year by

teachers, as it is at present.

Individual subjects at Access 1, Access 2,

Access 3 and National 4 levels will not be

graded but marked overall by pass or fail.

Subjects at National 5, Higher and Advanced

Higher levels will still include work which is

assessed by schools, but for these qualifications,

students will also have to pass an additional

assessment – usually a question paper and/or

an assignment – which will be marked externally

by SQA. These levels will be graded A to D.

If a learner fails an end of year assessment, they

will receive credit for what they have achieved

at the level they were working at. This is similar

to what currently happens with a number of our

other qualifications.

HOW DO

I CHOOSE?

CHOOSE A BROAD RANGE

OF SUBJECTS

If you aren’t sure what you want to do

when you leave school (or even if you

do), it’s always wise to choose a wide

range of subjects so you’ll have a wide

range of career choices.

CHOOSE SUBJECTS WHICH

YOU ARE INTERESTED IN

The chances are you’ll perform better

if you enjoy what you are doing.

CHOOSE SUBJECTS YOU

WANT TO DO

It can be difficult, but don’t just pick

classes because your friends have

chosen them – have a mind of your

own, it’ll stand you in good stead for

the future.

ASK FOR ADVICE

From your teachers and careers

advisor!

CHOOSING HIGHER &

ADVANCED HIGHER

SUBJECTS

Choosing higher and Advance higher

subjects will allow you to specialise

further in subjects.

CHOOSE WHAT YOU’RE BEST AT

At this stage, you’ll know your own

strengths so make sure that you follow

up subjects you performed well in over

the years – better grades mean you’ll

have more options available should you

choose to go to college or university.

LOOK INTO THE COLLEGE AND

UNIVERSITY COURSES YOU

WOULD LIKE TO GET INTO

This will give you an idea of the

subjects and grades you will need.

BALANCE WHAT YOU ARE

PRACTICALLY GOING TO BE

ABLE TO DO

For example, subjects like English,

History and Modern Studies are often

heavy in research, essays and projects,

so make sure you’ll be able to cope

with the workload.

CHOOSING THE

COLLEGE OR

UNIVERSITY COURSE

FOR YOU

So you’ve decided that you want to

study to become a lawyer, doctor,

journalist, accountant, beautician,

marketing consultant, hairdresser,

interior designer, actor, television

producer...

Well, there are literally thousands of

courses out there to choose from, so

here’s a few tips to help you choose.

Find out about the ucas (Universities

and Colleges Applications Process) as

soon as possible. Your school will help

you to complete the application, and

talk you through the process.

Colleges and universities all have their

prospectuses (lists of courses they

have on offer) online well in advance of

application deadlines, so get online and

have a look at what’s available.

sectarianism

SCOTLAND SPEAKS OUT!The Scottish Government have clamped down on sectarianism with the ‘Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Bill’ (go to www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Justice/law/sectarianism-action-1/football-violence/bill if you want to find out a bit more about what it all means!). They carried out lots of consultation work (a bit like we do with you to find out your thoughts and opinions on issues which affect you) throughout Scotland, and the Scottish people spoke out loudly and clearly!

89%OF SCOTS AGREE THAT SECTARIANISM IS OFFENSIVE

85%OF SCOTS AGREE THAT SECTARIANISM SHOULD BE A CRIMINAL OFFENCE

89% OF SCOTS AGREE THAT SECTARIANISM IS UNACCEPTABLE IN SCOTTISH FOOTBALL

91% AGREE THAT STRONGER ACTION NEEDS TO BE TAKEN TO TACKLE SECTARIANISM AND OFFENSIVE BEHAVIOUR ASSOCIATED WITH FOOTBALL IN SCOTLAND

Living in Scotland, we all know about sectarianism. Even if we haven’t directly experienced it ourselves, there’s no denying that it’s a problem. The official definition of sectarianism is that it’s ‘religious tension’, usually between Catholics and Protestants. However, this religious tension plays out in another important area of Scottish life – football. Unfortunately Celtic and Rangers two of Scotland’s top teams both attract a minority of fans who display ‘anti social, bigoted and violent behaviour’, which can ruin the enjoyment for the majority of people who turn out to enjoy football for what it is – a sport!

Page 37: Grid Magazine

REAL LIFE

OTHER FORMS OF SECTARIANISMAlthough the majority of sectarianism rears its ugly head in relation to football and religion, there are other forms of it as well. Football sectarianism in Scotland generally relates to being Catholic or Protestant, but many young people from different ages and backgrounds have experienced it too. Within Islam, there’s a lot of conflict between Sunni and Shia cultures. Culture, differences in political opinion, even what school people go to can be a cause of sectarian behaviour. Social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter can often inflame sectarian behaviour too, with some people thinking it’s OK if they’re behind a screen. One local young person was subjected to what can only be described as a hate campaign for saying on his own Twitter feed that he objected to the marches of the Orange order due to how intimidated they made him feel.

On the flip side, although most people view sectarianism as hateful and offensive, it can often be difficult for young people to avoid developing sectarian attitudes if they have grown up surrounded by them. Someone raised to believe that Catholics are ‘scum’ or Protestants are to be despised may struggle to reach their own conclusions if these opinions are all they have known. Tolerance is something a lot of us take for granted, but sometimes it can be hard to understand or accept something we don’t know about.

The bill means that threatening or bigoted behaviour, including singing or chanting sectarian songs (which surprisingly, many people don’t even realise is offensive!), or any other form of religious hatred are now criminal offences. However, even though the bill has been passed, Scotland still has a long way to go to tackle sectarianism, a problem which has been around for hundreds of years. It would be silly to think it’ll go away overnight, but Scotland’s on the right track, and is standing together to stamp out intolerance.

Culture, differences in political opinion, even what school people go to can be a cause of sectarian behaviour.

A YOUNG PERSON’S VIEWYoung Scot card holder Alexander aged 12 studied the novel ‘Divided City’ by Theresa Breslin

at school last year, a book which explores many of the issues caused by sectarian attitudes.

We asked him his thoughts on sectarianism:“I really enjoyed the book and thought it was well written, but I was really shocked

by the hateful attitudes and savage attacks towards people just because of what

football team they supported. Even before I read the book I thought sectarianism

was really bad because it makes people feel small and unwanted. Now, my

opinion is even stronger that sectarianism is disgusting and horrible”.
