First, let’s revise our compass directions …
4 Figure Grid References
Used in Ordnance Survey maps to locate a position
Northings
They run from North to South
Eastings
They run from one West to East
Grid References
Joined together they form a grid
Co-ordinates
These help us identify the line by having a number on them

These are used to give an accurate position. Usually accurate to a 100
metres.
A 6 Figure reference looks like this

How do we get a 4 figure Grid Reference?
First we identify the square like we did before

We divide the square up into 10 equal linesEastings

Now we add the Northings and Easting numbers

We read the Easting first = 24Next we read the Northing = 02

Now we have the Northing and Easting numbers, write it down like this

number and last number shown in yellow
