About the FestivalLaunched in 2007, Grimeborn isArcola’s annual festival of new operaandmusical theatre. It bringstogether innovative adaptations oftraditional operas, new, unknown, rarely seen or underappreciatedworks. It introduces new audiences toopera, and challenges the perceptionthat opera is inaccessible and elitist.

A fundamental aim of the festival isto foster emerging talent and providea platform for them to develop theirwork beyond the fringe. Festivalparticipants receive personalmentorship, technical and marketingsupport together with free orsubsidised rehearsal rooms.

Why we need youSeven years after its launch, we areready to take Grimeborn to the nextlevel; an ambitious schedule is laidout for 2013, with longer runs acrossboth studios. Looking to 2014, wehave commissioned an opera fromGabriel Prokofiev. To date Grimebornhas largely been funded through ourmain budget and box office income, supported by small grants. This isbecoming harder to sustain and

“ A unique opportunity to perform operain an edgy, leftfield venue that allows theaudience to be immersed in the drama”Thomas Bluntconductor and Grimeborn participant

“The place was packed out with acrazy crowd so buzzing that I feltI had crashed some very hip party”Telegraph

makes it difficult for us to achieveour ambitions: to commission moreworks, provide more seed funding fornew projects, expand the festival andincrease support for participatingartists.

Recent Arts Council researchpoints to a lack of opportunitiesfor emerging talent with limitedprospects for new performers andcomposers. Grimeborn is one of thefew platforms where artists can takethat next step – but we can’t do italone. We’d like to bring you into theGrimeborn circle to help us fosternew talent and build relationshipsthat will champion the nextgeneration of artists.

We are looking for people who arekeen to support Grimeborn in moreways than “just” making a donation. We want to show you where yourmoney is going, enable you to meetthe artists you are funding, visittheir rehearsals, pass on yourown knowledge, and get moreof an insight into the work thatis presented at the festival. TheGrimeborn Funders Circlewilloffer opportunities for exchanges, encounters, masterclasses andtalks for you and the participantsand thus enrich the festival andopera community.
