theBeneFitSoFFreShmanreadingclaSSJulie Inada, AHS Reading Coach

We can all agree that reading skills play a crucial role in and out of school. Ashland High School is committed to ensuring that all students graduate from high school as capable confident readers of all kinds of text. As the high school reading coach, I work with teachers on how to help their students be successful readers of the text they use in their classes.

In addition, I offer 8th period Freshman Reading. The goals and benefits of the class are listed:

Boosts confidence in reading Students self-select their reading material Develops fluency in reading Introduces students to comprehension strategies for in and out of school reading Frequent reading assessments to monitor progress Direct one-on-one support in reading Extra English credit on transcript Small relaxed atmosphere Meets just two days a week, white days 1:55-3:20, with no class on white Fridays

At the end of last year, students in my reading classes were asked to reflect on their experiences. Here are a few of the comments:

“I found books I like.”“I feel more comfortable when I’m reading.”“I read faster and smoother.”“I learned strategies that help me remember what I read.”

Freshman Reading is open to all 9th grade students: if you have questions or feel that your student would benefit from this class, please feel free to call me – 482-8771 ex. 173, or come by my classroom, Humanities 39.

Don’t forget to vote November 6th!!!

AHS Theatre, in celebration of their 10th Season in the New Theatre in 2008, announce they will produce two musical productions in the Mountain Avenue Theatre this year, in the fall and another in the spring.

AHS will present their first fall musical ever---LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS—opening November 1 and running three weekends.

In its Broadway review, The New York Times describes the show this way: “Little Shop leaves the audience... feeling just like Audrey II between victims — ravenous for more.” Little Shop of Horrors is a 1982 Off-Broadway musical black comedy by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman, about a nerdy florist shop worker who raises a plant that craves human blood. The musical was based on the low-budget 1960 black comedy The Little Shop of Horrors, directed by Roger Corman. The musical score, composed by Menken in the style of 1960’s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown, included several show-stoppers including “Skid Row (Downtown),” “Somewhere That’s Green,” and “Suddenly Seymour,” as well as the title song (wikipedia).

Chris Williams directs a cast of 14. Jennifer Schloming is the musical director and Suzanne Seiber is the choreographer. Chloe Landes-Michelli is the stage manager and Rocky Garcia and Max Kiss are her assistants.

Featured in the cast are: Josh Houghton (Seymour), Isabella Pribyl (Audrey), Tanner Arndt (Dentist (Orin), Daniel Burt (Mushnick), Jeffrey Star (Derelict/ Wino/Customer),Erica Perkinson (Audrey II, the Voice), Tessa Williams (Audrey II, the Puppet) and Hali Alspach, Ally Backus, Vieve Harding, Sophie Javna, Savannah Julian, Azalea Micketti, and Molly Murphy (the Doo-Wop Girls).

All seats: $13.00 ($14.00 at the door). Tickets are now on sale at AHS Main Office, Paddington Station, Tree House Books on the plaza and the Music Coop on A Street.

This show is recommended for children from 8-100 years old. For Group Sales or more information call 482-8771.

The Grizzly Branch of Rogue Federal Credit Union will once again be open for business during the 2007-2008 school year. The Grizzly Branch is open Monday through Friday during the lunch period for all your “banking” needs. The student tellers are ready to handle your cash and check deposits, check cashing and withdrawals (some cash back limits apply). Not already a member? Have your student stop by and ask one of our student tellers how to join RFCU; accounts can be opened at the Grizzly Branch on Tuesdays during lunch. Faculty members, did you know you can have your payroll direct deposited with RFCU and access your account through the Grizzly Branch just the same as any one of our full-service branches? Stop by the Grizzly Branch and utilize your credit union to the fullest! We look forward to the opportunity to serve you!
