sustaining the environmentGrosvenor Construction uses an environment management system which enables us to monitor and minimise our impact upon the environment. This system combined with our conservation-based approach is the driver for all our work in protecting and conserving our environment.

Our key conservation principle of ‘minimum intervention’ means that we apply our skills to ensure that materials and processes are not used to excess on any project.

In addition, our experience in preparing and carrying out planned maintenance programmes often prevents damage to a building, as well as reducing the environmental impact of costly repairs.

Our approach to preservation always considers sustainability and we use conservation techniques that eliminate or reduce our carbon footprint.

Tal y Braich Cottage is a Grade II listed traditional Welsh crofter’s dwelling built from local stone and rendered with lime under a slate roof. The adjoining cowshed, pig sty and hay barn are later additions. The cottage would have originally been built from clods of peat as a ‘Ty Unnos’. This Welsh tradition stated that if you could build a house quickly within one night and have smoke coming out of the chimney by morning, you could claim the right to remain living there.

The cottage was built around 1820-1850 and probably housed a worker at the nearby slate quarries and his family. The owner would have brought home odd or damaged slates from the quarries whenever they were available to gradually create a complete slate roof on his cottage. A very similar crofter’s cottage can be seen in the folk museum in Cardiff, where it was reconstructed after being dismantled and moved from its original location in Caernarfon.

The cottage itself fell into a derelict state through general neglect and exposure to the weather conditions at its elevated position. The stone walled crofts around Tal Y Braich, which would have housed a small number of animals for the family’s use, remained in remarkably good condition. The renovation work was fi lmed by the BBC for a series chronicling the whole restoration project. The fully restored farmhouse recently featured in the TV series

‘Coalhouse’ following life on a Victorian farm in the 1890s.

Our work incorporated:

• initial structural stabilisation

• re-pointing

• lime plastering

• lime washing

• re-roofi ng

• installing new timber windows and doors

• external dry stone walling and landscaping.

This impressive Georgian townhouse was built in 1760, on the site of an even earlier timber-framed building dating from 1610, though there is no evidence left of this original dwelling. The house was built by landowner Faulk Salisbury as his town residence surrounded by the largest garden in the town of Denbigh from 1610 right through to 1953. The garden came complete with its own grove of trees, giving the dwelling its name.

After the last of the Salisbury family died, the house changed hands several times and it gradually slipped into decline. The garden was built upon and Grove Place was heavily institutionalised during the 20th Century. Upon becoming a Police Station, all of its fabulous features were ripped out and the service wing was turned into the holding cells. However, the Police Station was relocated and this once-proud building was left to decay, becoming a target for vandals and thieves. Fortunately, its salvation came in the form of Mr Jason Webber and his family, who fell in love with this majestic wreck and set about getting the grants available to restore the place to its former glory.

Grosvenor Construction was appointed as principal contractor to complete the fi rst phase of the

restoration in 2010.

Our work incorporated:

• renewing the roof

• re-pointing work

• restoring the superb sash and Venetian

style windows.
