W-1 WATER HARDENING Ground And Polished And Cold-Drawn Drill Rod (Color Code: Red)
• The most popular, versatile, and least expensive grade of drill rod. • The through-hardening quality of W-1affords optimum response to heat treatment and provides toughness and maximum wear- resistance in service. • High carbon content allows it to be used often without heat treatment for many maintenance applications• It is a fine-grained electric furnace-melted commercial grade tool steel which is supplied in the fully-spheroidized 100% decarb free condition.
HEAT TREATMENT: Heat thoroughly at 1425°-1500°F. Hold one-half hour per inch of section, quench in water (brine). Sizes below 9/32-inch round may be quenched in oil.
O-1 OIL-HARDENING Ground and Polished Drill Rod(Color Code: Yellow)
• O-1 drill rod is an electric furnace-melted oil-hardening tool steel supplied with a full-spheroidized structure.• A non-shrinking general-purpose tool steel, it has excellent abrasion resistance toughness and machinability characteristics.
HEAT TREATMENT Sections smaller than 1/4" heat to 1450°-1475° and hold until heated through. For larger sections, preheat to 1200°F, then raise to 1450°-1500° to to hardening temperature, hold one-half hour per inch of cross section. Quench in oil at 125°-150°F and TEMPER IMMEDIATELY.
M-2 ANNEALEDHigh Speed Drill Rod M-2 is a tungsten-molybdenum high-speed steel. It has a wider heat treat range than most of the high speed steels and has a resistance to decarburization. It offers an excellent combination of good red hard-ness, toughness and wear resistance.
D-2 AIR HARDENINGGround and Polished Drill Rod
D-2 Drill rod is fine quality, air-hardening, electric fur-nace melt tool steel. The combination of superior abra-sion resistance and toughness found in D-2 results from it’s high carbon and high chromium analysis. It is an extraordinary tool steel that can be specified for the most demanding application. It is supplied in the full spheroidized condition, 100% free of decarb and other surface imperfections. D-2’s low sulphur content makes it non-freemaching.

• A-2 drill rod is made from fine grain, electric furnace air-hardening 5% chrome tool steel.• Superior quality steel which has excellent wear and abrasion resistant properties.
HEAT TREATMENT Preheat thoroughly at 1450°F, then raise to hardening temperature of 1725-1800°F and soak uniformly. For larger sections, use high side; for thin or smaller sections, use low side. Quench in still air or dry air blasxt at 125-175%F, then TEMPER IMMEDIATELY.

To minimize surface decarburization use salt bath, controlled atmospere furnace or pack harden. Use high side of hardness for larger diameters.
High-Speed Drill Rod (Color Code: Orange)
• M-2 is a tungsten-molybdenum high speed steel.• It has a wider heat treat range than most of the high speed steels, and has a resistance to decarburization.• It offers an excellent combination of good red hardness, toughness and wear resistance.
HEAT TREATMENT Warm slightly before charging into furnace, which should be operating at 1350°-1500°F. After thorough preheating, transfer to hardening furnace at 2175°-2225°F, depending on tool size and degree of hardening required for application. Cool in air, oil or a molten salt bath operating at 1000°-1100°F in case of oil quenching, it is usually good practice to interrupt the quench by removing the tool after it has reached about 1000°F; and allow cooling to continue in still air. Tools should be allowed to cool to 150°F, or when they can be held by the bare hand and then tempered immediately. The tempering temperature may be varied according to the desired hardness, but it is usually in the range of 1000°-1100°F.
