    Action Research - Intro

Running operation is an enigma What makes it work as it does? Could it

work better in its current form? What different forms could it take and still

achieve the same result? What market, internal or environmental change

would cause most trouble to the working of the operation, and with what

effect? Action Research (AR) is a generic term, which covers many forms of

action-oriented research, and indicates diversity in theory and practice

    among action researchers.

AR provides a wide choice for potential action researchers as to what

might be appropirate for their research question.

    Action Research What?

Research in action, rather than research about action.

    Participative.

    Concurrent with action.

A sequence of events and an approach to problem solving.

    Action Research - Origins

Kurt Lewin and his colleagus (1940) conducted AR projects in different

    social settings.

Coch and French (1948) study the resistance to change in industrial plant,

    by set up two approaches:

    Representative participation.

    Total participation.

Were able to show differing effects of productivity and on the acceptance

    of the change.

    Action Research Characteristics

    (1) Action researchers take action.

AR always involves two goals: solve a problem and contribute to science.

    AR is interactive.

AR aims at developing holistic understanding during a project and

    recognising complexity.

    AR is fundamentally about change.

    Action Research Characteristics

    (2) AR requires an understanding of the ethical framework, values and norms

within which it is used in a particular context.

AR can include all types of data gathering methods.

Action research requires a breadth of pre-understanding of the corporate

    environment.

AR should be conducted in real time.

The AR paradigm requires its own quality criteria.

    Action Research When?

AR is appropriate when the research question relates to describing an

unfolding series of actions over time in a given group, community or

    organisation.

Problem owners are both the practitioner and the researcher.

Action researchers are outside agents who act as facilitators.

    Live case in real time.

    Action Research Implementing

    (1) Pre-step.

    Main steps:

    Data gathering.

    Data feedback.

    Data analysis.

    Action planning.

    Implementation.

    Evaluation.

    Action Research Skills (1)

Requires confident and experienced researchers to cope with uncertainty

of the unfolding story and to be able to work as researchers exposed to

the reality of organisational change in real time.

Skills in diagnosis and intervention in relation to issues and problems in

    organizations.

Types of inquiry: Pure inquiry; Exploratory diagnostic inquiry; Confrontive

    inquiry.

Typology of inquiry as the basis for skill development.

    Learning in action.

    Journal keeping.

    Writing an AR report.

    Action Research Theory Generation

    AR generates emergent theory.

    Theory building will be incremental.

AR demands an explicit concern with teory that is formed from the

conceptualisation of the particular experience in ways that are intended to

    be meaningful to others.

Design of tools, techniques and models is not enough. The design must be

explicit and shown to be related to the theory.
