91 91 Uttaranchal Dwarahat DEHRADUN Dwarahat is about 43 km far from Almora. It was the capital of the Katyuri Kings. There are groups of 7 temples viz. Maniyan Group of temples, Kacheri Group of temples, Gujar Deo Temple, Bandeo Temple, Ratandeo shrines, Mritunjaya Group of temples and Badri Nath Group of temples. These seven groups of temples date from 10 th to 13 th centuries AD. Asokan Rock Edict, Kalsi, Dehradun

The Mauryan King Asoka (273 – 232 BC)of Magadha got his fourteenth edictengraved on a rock at Kalsi. This wasbrought to light by John Forest in AD1860. The rock-edict is in Prakritlanguage and Brahmi script. This is animportant monument in the field of Indianepigraphy.

Chandpur Fort is situated in Patti Sili Chandpur, ParganaChandpur in District Chamoli. The Fort was the seat of KanakPal, the actual founder of the present Garhwal dynasty. Hisdescendant Ajaipal consolidated the kingdom of Garhwal. Thefort is situated on the peak of a promontory formed by the bendof a stream flowing about 150 m below. Some of the ruins of thefort have been noticed here.

Ancient Site at Jagatgram

The excavationexposed theremains of threesites at Jagatgramwhere the KingSilavaraman ofthe 3rd century ADperformedasvamedhas.Here, welldesigned bricks are laid like a syena (hawk oreagle) with spread wings. Bricks from the firstsite bore Sanskrit inscriptions in the Brahmiscript of the 3rd century AD. It says that theplace was the city of the king’s fourth horse-sacrifice. The other two sites produced anumber of inscribed bricks.

The temple site of Jageshwar issituated in a deep and extremely coldvalley about 35 km from Almora.Jageshwara temple is the prominenttemple here and also gives its name tothe site it stands towards the east of theenclosure. It consists of the sanctumchamber, having curvilinear spire andmandapa of pyramidal type. Thesanctum is triratha on plan. Thecentral faces are provided with theperforated window screens. Thesikhara has six bhumis. The crowningmembers are concealed under a canopyin accordance with the style of theregion.

The temple is dedicated to YogisvaraSiva, and worshipped in the form of alinga. Stylistically the temple is datableto eighth century AD.

Surya Temple, Katarmal

This imposing temple structure is located on a lofty hill onthe right bank of the river Kosi and about 18 km fromAlmora. The temple is locally known as “Bara Adit” or thegreat sun god. The main temple is surrounded by a pavedenclosure measuring about 48.75 m by 30.48 m. There are14 subsidiary shrines around the main temple.

The main shrine faces east and consists of a garbhagrihaand mandapa. The sanctum has a curvilinear elevationwhile the mandapa iscovered with a gabledroof and is a lateraddition. The entranceof the sanctum chamberwas provided withbeautifully carvedwooden door leaveswhich have been shiftedto the NationalMuseum, New Delhifor better preservation.Stylistically the templecan be dated from 12th

to 13th century AD.

Adibadri, a halting-place between Lohbaand Karnaprayag is situated in Patti SiliChandpur and lies about 17 km away fromKarnprayag. A group of 16 temples arenoted at Adibadri, which are small to verysmall in size. The chief temple consists of agarbhagriha, surmounted by a pyramidalroof with a raised platform at the front.
