Advantages of CALL It allows users to develop a selective and critical
reading habit which enables them to scan a large amount of information (topic) of their interest. Hartoyo, 2012.
CALL offers freedom for users to choose any topic of information within the package. (Hartoyo, 2012).
Since the CALL tutorial package can also be used in pairs, it spurs the user (student) to be able to collaborate very usefully in problem solving which in itself is considered to be a good skill to acquire, as it can be implemented in a wide range of dofferent contxts. (Hartoyo, 2012).
CALL’s flexibility of time allows the students to determine what particular topics and how long he wants to learn. (Hartoyo, 2012).
Disandvantages of CALL
At the present time most students do not possess their own computer at home.
In general, reading text, especially the long ones, on the screen is slower, more difficult and tiring.
Viewing the financial point, CALL is costly enough for the programmer or teacher, let alone for students.
Web – based Learning Web-based learning is associated with
learning materials delivered in a Web browser, including when the materials are packaged on CD-ROM or other media.
The examples of web based learning
Task-based Web activities [Newsbreak – Group work] Things to Do: (1) Choose a current topic (news) of interest to your group; (2) Find information on the topic on the Web; (3) Make a poster with the information from the Web; (4) Give an oral presentation with the poster. Suggested Web Sites: The Courier-Mail (http://www.couriermail.news.com.au/) CNN.com (http://www.cnn.com/)
Doing listening TOEFL tests through http://toefl.edu.vn/toefl-online-test/toefl-ibt-writing-practice-test.html, etc
There are three main ways in which the Web can assist with teaching languages:
Find resources which you can download / print and use with a class.
Allow your students to find resources on their own or use specific materials on-line.
Create your own Web pages / let your students create their own Web pages.
Advantages of web based learning:
provides students with authentic language
up-to-the-minute information real communication motivating relevant to content-based
instruction
Disadvantages of web based learning:
World Wide Wait: Big files can be slow to load into memory. The wait time can be maddening for your students.
Information glut: There is so much information that it may be too time-consuming to find the "good stuff." Even
with search engines, it's still hard to find what you want.
Some web sites are thin in substance.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH
