WIMAX

• WiMAX, an acronym of Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access is a telecommunications protocol that provides fixed and fully mobile Internet access

• "WiMAX" was created by the WiMAX Forum

• digital communications system, also known as IEEE 802.16

• WiMAX can provide broadband wireless access (BWA) up to 30 miles (50 km) for fixed stations, and 3 - 10 miles (5 - 15 km) for mobile stations

Page 5: Group5

USES OF WIMAX• Providing portable mobile broadband connectivity across cities and

countries through a variety of devices.

• Providing a wireless alternative to cable and DSL for "last mile" broadband access.

• Providing a source of Internet connectivity as part of a business continuity plan.

• Companies are deploying WiMAX to provide mobile broadband or at-home broadband connectivity across whole cities or countries.

SWOT ANALYSIS

•Adaptation of new technology•Well defined value proposition

•Can work both on licensed and Unlicensed band

•Security issues•Service provider may not invest

•Not compatible with mobile network

•Extend wireless connectivity

•Low cost, faster transmission

•Entry into developing countries

•DSL major competitor

•Lack of support from mobile operators

•Regulatory policies

Page 13: Group5

FUTURE OF WIMAX

• Next generation technology• Step towards 4G• Provide broad consumer market• Subscribers would reach upto 70 billion• Better mobility and broadband services

Page 14: Group5

• A wireless industry term for a collection of international

standards and technologies

• aimed at increasing efficiency and improving the performance of mobile wireless networks.

• offer data speeds, increased capacity for voice and data and the advent of packet data networks

• 3G network technology became available for commercial use first in Japan in 2001

Page 15: Group5

SERVICES

• momentous capacity and broadband capabilities to support greater numbers of voice and data customers

• Mobile Internet Browsing

• Direct access to company networks, business users will have a direct access to company networks while traveling or working outside office.

Page 17: Group5

SWOT ANALYSIS

•Faster data transmitting and higher bandwidth•Personalized multimedia communication tools•Cellular evolution to high data rates

•Cannot offer full Internet experience due to limited speed and bandwidth•Relatively higher cost to use compared with 2G and 2.5G

•Strategic alliance with non-telecommunication industries•commercialization of 3G encourage applications of e and m-commerce•Global economy recover stimulates consumption

•Upcoming 4G threatens to entry before 3G is fully deployed and commercialized.•2G and 2.5G are still in the market place, squeezing the market share

Page 18: Group5

RECOMMENDATIONS

• Mobile operators should first enhance the security issue of WiMAX, maybe the security mechanism from 3G network is good reference

for them.• keep up with the regulatory direction of government

• Security is the main issue that needs to be considered for broadband mobile of personal communication

• To make the 3G services more affordable. Educating the customers on 3G services.

CONCLUSION

Wimax and 3G Networks will offer services and capabilities that just a few years ago were confined to science fiction. Handheld devices no larger than today's mobile phones will allow you see as well as

hear the person you're talking to, access the internet at high speed and use sites specifically offering fast,

useful and fun information.
