Legends & Lessons:
The Taz & The Shach
The Taz and Shach stand as two of the most influential halachic commentaries
until today. While both excelled in scholarship from an early age, they led
very disparate paths to prominence. Coming from a younger generation, the Shach might have viewed the Shulchan
Aruch with greater validity than the Taz, who's own title "Turei Zahav" serves as an ode to the Tur. Despite
both becoming leading luminaries of the time, we tried to crack the mystery- did the two of them get along with each
other? We looked at various indications with opposing conclusions.
Women's Parsha Shiur: Bo
When Rav Elazar Ben Arach
succumbed to his desires in a
foreign city it inhibited his
ability to properly analyze and
understand Torah. In his first
attempt, he seemingly misreads a
pasuk in our Parsha- that Nissan
shall be made the first month.
While the simple understanding
is that he confused similar
looking letters, there could be a
deeper meaning to his ‘reading’.
Given the background of Rav
Elazar Ben Arach’s insistence on
a person having an good heart’ in
Pirkei Avos, we proposed a few
different suggestions as to what
lesson he was really trying to
teach- of emotional restraint
during moments with intellectual
demands.
Peshischa on Parsha: Know That I’m Here For
You
In three different ways throughout the Parsha, we
noted how the Torah emphasizes the importance of
being a supportive and empathetic peer. We learned this Hashem’s first words of the Parsha according to the
Kotzker Rebbe, from the difficulty of the Egyptians
during darkness according to the Chiddushei HaRim, and in
the way that the donkey is rewarded, in contrast to the dog. Each message revolves
around a similar theme: that to overcome or succeed one
needs the support and encouragement of others.

The Bronfin Family Originally from the south of Germany, I converted while living in Israel before moving to Oak Park. I started to come to YIOP after my daughter, Eliana Rivka (Nanni) was born. I saw an ad about the children’s programs and a few months later became a member. Currently sahm, farmer/gardener (we grow everything) librarian (little free library, seed library-happy to share) volunteer (post pals, yesh tikvah) love to read, write, play piano, sew, owns
two cats. Ñanni is a bidding librarian (watch for purim!:) loves to help, write postcards, and already masters the art of German pancakes and sourdough bread.
