Welcome

Flexible Learning is really important to everyone in LIT. It’s something that we do well, and something that is beneficial for learners in a whole range of ways.

This handbook may well be one of the first steps you take on your journey in lifelong learning. As well as providing information on our programmes, it also contains contact details for our staff, who can help and advise you on your journey in education.

I really would encourage you to use those contacts and reach out to us for help with any queries or questions you may have.

Making the decision to join a programme is not always an easy one – but many people have successfully made that decision in the past, and many will do so in the future. Few if any ever regret it.

In independent benchmark surveys, we consistently perform at the top of the range in terms of our access to lecturers, friendliness and diversity. That’s a good recipe for successful lifelong learning.

The Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest will develop a new, unique technological university that will provide accessible higher education to a large portion of the country’s population while strengthening our commitment to our regions.

We understand the issues that face our flexible learners, and we have a range of supports in place for you every step of the way. Whether you decide to join a CPD programme, a vocational programme or one of our Masters programmes, you are joining a community in LIT.

For many of you, the end point of your education journey in LIT is likely to mean improved career prospects, higher earning potential, or a career change. For some of you, it may mean personal development or pursuit of a new interest. No matter what kind of learner you are, LIT can be a place where your journey is enjoyable and worthwhile.

I look forward to welcoming you on board.

Professor Vincent CunnanePresident, LIT

Applied Sciences & Technology

The Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology provides a wide and diverse range of part-time programmes. Our ambition as a Faculty is to continue to be at the forefront of new technological developments, to design new and innovative programmes and to support our local and national industry and commercial sector.

The Faculty is organised into three academic departments:• Department of Applied Science• Department of Applied Social Sciences• Department of Information Technology

I studied the part time Certificate in Bioprocessing in LIT. This course opened the door for me in Regeneron where I have just started as a Process Science Associate. I have two small kids so it was challenging to find time to study but the flexibility of the online course makes it possible. The classes were recorded so you can watch them at the time that suits you. The most interesting part of the course was the laboratories in LIT where we could put into practice what we had learnt during the lectures. As the class was small we had a great connection and communication with the lecturers. They were very nice and helpful, always willing to give us extra time. My favourite subjects were Bioprocessing and Cell Biology.”

Faculty of

Business &Humanities

The Faculty of Business and Humanities is an innovative, dynamic and quality driven faculty within the Limerick Institute of Technology. The faculty thrives on offering its students the relevant supports, skills and competences to equip them to deal with the challenges they will encounter in the workplace of their chosen discipline area.

The Faculty is organised into three academic departments:• Department of Business & Financial Services• Department of Marketing, Enterprise & Digital Communications• Department of Sport, Leisure & Tourism

The Higher Diploma in Business Management programme was an enriching experience and a positive stepping stone into a new career. What I especially liked in the flexible learning option was that it offered smaller group settings, with students from various backgrounds. Everyone brought forth a wide range of professional experience which was conducive to interesting group discussions.

Lecturers were available and attentive to students’ needs, adapting as necessary. Each lecturer was friendly and very knowledgeable in his/her specific field. Each went the extra mile to deliver relevant content to keep students engaged. The workload was very manageable. Assignments were well-balanced, meaningful and helped deepen understanding of concepts seen in class. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who is seeking the opportunity to further their education.”

Faculty of

Engineering & Built Environment

The faculty of Engineering and Built Environment offer a wide range of part-time, upskilling programmes. We are constantly monitoring their quality and relevance and developing new programmes to meet the demand of students and industry.

The Faculty is organised into three academic departments:• Department of Built Environment• Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering• Department of Mechanical Engineering

I was familiar with the Aviation programmes for some years and knew that the material was developed and delivered by industry experts whom I know and respect. The course was initially delivered in the classroom but as it evolved, I was delighted to see that a method of flexible blended delivery opened up the opportunity for me to participate as I travel a lot for work.

The Course Director Jane and all the lecturers were very committed and helpful with any issues I had as I sat the programme. I have now successfully completed four, ten credit modules with LIT.

Thanks to LIT I have now progressed my career and my journey in education continues.”

I found the 3D Animation and VFX programme at LIT to be very family friendly. The mix of weekend classes and online content suited my family circumstances brilliantly. Also, I found the staff to be extremely professional, helpful and easy to engage with. They delivered the course material in a way that was very accessible and easy understand. Overall it gave me a solid foundation in 3D and VFX and I would be far more confident moving forward with a career in the animation and film industry now.

I would highly recommend anyone considering career development or a change in career direction to consider the 3D animation & VFX programmes at LIT.”

Always wanted to go to college but didn’t know where to start?Limerick Institute of Technology has developed a Foundation Level programme, called the Certificate in Transition to Higher Education. This yearlong programme is aimed at those who wish to experience third level education, develop their skills and knowledge, prior to starting a full degree programme.

This programme will be offered through two different options in the 2021/22 academic year, a blended programme format (Moylish campus) and a fully online programme with face to face induction. Applicants in receipt of a means-tested social welfare payment can apply for a reduced fee (€100).

“The Transition to Higher Education course helped me to realise that college is for me and the confidence to know that I could be a successful student.”

Derek, programme graduate and current student of BA (Hons) in Social Care Work

“The lecturers on the course were very helpful and encouraging. I’m delighted I did the course and I would recommend it to anyone thinking of getting back to studying, particularly mature students like me.”

Nicola, programme graduate and current student of BEng (Hons) in Precision Engineering

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is an academic credit system based on the estimated student workload required to achieve the objectives and learning outcomes of a module or programme of study. It is designed to enable academic recognition for periods of study, to facilitate student mobility and credit accumulation and transfer. The ECTS is the recommended credit system for higher education in Ireland and across the European Higher Education Area.
