According to the most recent Provincial Tourism Strategy for Manitoba, “this is Manitoba’s time on the world’s tourism stage.” A recent announcement stated a 25% increase in tourism funding during Manitoba’s November 2019 throne speech. Plan 95/5 allocates 5% of provincial tourism tax revenues to Travel Manitoba. This is a notable increase from the original Plan 96/4 announced in 2016 which allocated 4% of provincial tourism tax revenues to Travel Manitoba. As tourism revenues grow, the capacity of Travel Manitoba to partner and invest in innovative marketing programs increases, year over year. The time has never been better to develop a tourism strategy for your community or to start or expand a tourism business in Manitoba. Tourism development is about bringing communities together and getting them to work toward the same goals in cooperation and collaboration. More than ever, communities in Eastern Manitoba are realizing the potential tourism has to become a key economic driver. To date, the Whiteshell, Beausejour-Brokenhead, Lac du Bonnet and the Beaches of 59, have all partnered with Travel Manitoba through Eastman Tourism to undergo a strategic planning process for their community/region. Eastman Tourism, who is your regional tourism agency, is here to work with communities, not-for-profits and businesses on tourism development. They are your liaison to Travel Manitoba and can initiate the strategic planning and place branding process with them. Young Women’s Conference Highlights

CFWR partnered with Skills Canada Manitoba and Sunrise School Division to host a Young Women’s Conference in Beausejour on October 9, 2019 for grade 8 girls to learn about trade and technology job opportunities. The conference highlighted various vocations; provided experiential learning through hands on activities; and allowed young women to interact with female mentors working, or operating a business in trades or technology. There were also plenty of opportunity for the girls to meet and engage with students from other schools. The day began with a Meet the Mentor session where the girls were divided into groups to learn about the respective mentor’s business and type of work. Businesses represented were Wakefield Construction, Manitoba Infrastructure, Town of Beausejour (Public

Works Department), Manitoba Hydro, and Milwaukee Tools. Following this session, the girls were regrouped and attended 45 minute activity sessions conducted by Manitoba Hydro (Power Line Technician), Sunrise School Division (Coding), and Due North Systems (Cyber Security). At lunch, keynote speaker Laura Patton of Nickels and Dimes Money Mentoring spoke about her entrepreneurship journey that took her through illness, the Elevate Program, business development, and ultimately success. Laura inspired the girls to dream and to work hard to reach their goals. The day was educational, inspirational, enjoyable and engaging. With positive feedback from the 38 students in attendance, the hosting agencies are excited to coordinate another event for next fall!

COMPLIMENTARY

If you are a practitioner, council member, or board member working to enhance the social-economic conditions in your local area, then this training is for you!! The Community Edge CED Certification Program is an EDAM (Economic Developers Association of Manitoba) initiative. EDAM has developed a Manitoba based training program to enhance understanding and skills required to “do Economic Development”. There are 8 training modules available. Pick and choose the ones that enhance areas of knowledge applicable to you, or take all 8 and seek out EDGE Certification. To make the training accessible for interested people in the North Eastman Region, Community Futures Winnipeg River will host one module each month from September 2019 to May 2020 at our office in Lac du Bonnet. See the poster on the next page for more details and registration information. Please note that there is space for a maximum of 12 people. Another option to access the EDGE training modules, is to apply to host a module in your own community. If you have enough local area interest, or want to offer training for a specific group, then this is a great option. You can read more about the process in the Community Edge Brochure and register with EDAM through their online process @ https://www.edamonline.ca/communityedge-training-program/request-for-training-in-your-community/ or by contacting Lesley Gaudry, EDAM Manager at 204.471.1210 or [email protected].
