PRINCIPAL’S NEWS Ka nui te mihi ki a koutou
Here we are already in week 4 of Term 3. I hope that everyone is ready for the challenges of a busy remainder of the term. Aside from our every day focus on teaching, learning, achievement and co-curricular activities we also have our Open Night, Year 11-13 practice examinations and workshops, ‘Mid Summer Night Circus’ evening, student led Individual Development Plan (IDP) meetings and the powhiri for Robin Fabish (our new Principal).
Despite these exciting activities our primary focus is on our students completing assessments, achieving credits and preparing for NCEA examinations or Junior Diploma. By the end of this term a majority of the senior course work will be completed and so it is essential that study is being done both at school and at home.
Term 4 is only just over three weeks long for senior students. Senior students will only be released for exam study once they have fulfilled the minimum requirements at their NCEA level, gained clearance from their teachers or negotiated alternative arrangements with me.
As you can see in this newsletter our learning community has successfully participated in many areas at Tamatea High School. In particular, I would like to acknowledge and congratulate our
Year 9 and 10 Māori Performing Arts group who performed with distinction at last week’s Team Tamatea Kapa Haka Festival and again at this week’s assembly.
On Thursday 20th August we have our annual Open Evening for prospective students and families. If you have any family or friends who are considering coming to Tamatea High School I encourage them to come along to our Open Evening and see first hand the wonderful opportunities we have to offer.
Finally I need to remind everyone that we have a mid-term break on Monday 24th August.

Warena (back row, fourth from left) who competed in the New Zealand Darts Council Junior/Youth Championships during the school holidays and was placed third in his age group.
Congratulations to …..……. Te Ahurei Kingi who has been selected for Hawke’s Bay Tuis and was also selected to play for the Te Matau A Maui Wahine team who won the annual Te Tini A Maui tournament in Palmerston North.
Congratulations …. to Tihema Douglas, Anaru Walters and Logan Teao-Carroll who
were selected for the Te Tini Maui Central North Rugby Team. The team travelled to Auckland
and played before the New Zealand Māori All Blacks game.

The group performed their bracket at assembly and stunned the school with the quality of their singing and actions.
Jumble Sale Saturday 19th September In June/July 2016 a group of nine students and Ms Brownlee, Japanese teacher, are planning to go to Japan on a language and cultural tour. The group has started fund-raising and on Saturday 19 September from 11.30am – 3pm in the school auditorium they are having a Jumble Sale. There is still time to donate clean, used clothes, shoes and toys for us to sell at this event. There will also be a baking sale and a sausage sizzle available.

Year 10 Health During Term Three, your son/daughter will be continuing with the Health curriculum. This involves researching career options to get ready for course selection for NCEA Level 1 in 2016; understanding how good decision making can maintain and enhance their sexual health; and also to demonstrate an understanding of strategies that can be used to cope in times of change. If you have any questions or need further information, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Macfarlane (HOD Health) at school.
Otago University Alcohol Resource Survey All Year 10 students will be asked to participate in a survey to compare two resources that look at how alcohol affects the brain. To have your child’s input into how effective they think these resources are and changes they suggest to make them more effective for adolescents is invaluable for teaching programmes long-term. It is completely voluntary and a consent form will be sent home for you to sign along with a brochure that outlines the resources in more detail. The survey is being run by Shanti Campbell from Otago University and facilitated by Mrs Macfarlane. Thank-you in advance for your support.

Mayoral Reception for International Students We welcomed five new International students to Tamatea High School this term and they, along
with some of our existing group of International students recently attended a Mayoral reception
with Napier Mayor Bill Dalton.

Melbourne Storm We were privileged to be able to welcome Dayne Weston and Slade Griffin from The Melbourne Storm league rugby team to Tamatea High School to talk to our students along with students from William Colenso College, Te Ara Hou, Tamatea Primary and Tamatea Intermediate Schools. They were very inspiring, answered lots of questions and then signed autographs. They left us with some wise words “The harder your work the luckier your get”. Some of our students welcomed the team to Hawke’s Bay by leading a Haka at the airport.
