Growing up with FossFoss, having served the community since 1929, has many times cared for different generations of the same family. This is the case with the family of Linda and Ken Reid. It all started when Ken and his family moved to 108 N. 130th in Broadview back in 1958. They moved into a house where the Village cottages now sit.

Ken essentially grew up with Foss in his backyard. He and his friend Charlie, who lived next door, frequently visited residents at Foss. One resident in particular, TC Phinney, did magic tricks to entertain them.

In the early 1960s, the first of the Reid family members moved to Foss. Mary (Mavi) Johns, Ken’s maternal great-aunt lived at Foss for 25 years, and passed away at the age of 102. During this time, Ken and his family living just a few blocks away, visited often.

Next came Hattie, Ken’s paternal great-grandmother, who was affectionately known as Gram. Hattie was at Foss for 10 years.

In the years that followed, more of Ken’s family was entrusted to Foss. Isabelle Hayes (Dee Dee ), Ken’s maternal grandmother, lived at Foss in the 1970’s and 1980’s and Josephine Bross (Jo), Ken’s great-aunt and Isabelle’s sister lived at Foss until age 97.

In the early ‘90s, Ken’s mother, Genevieve Reid, sold the family home to Foss and moved to a condo at Bitter Lake. The area where their house stood became part of the Village construction project.

After several years living at Bitter Lake, Genevieve moved to Foss Village. She occupied the unit in the cottage that had been in the exact location of her home where she had lived for more than three decades. Needless to say, this made her transition easier.

Soon after the Village opening, Linda’s mother Jewel moved to the Village. Jewel lived there for about 5 years before moving to long-term care.

We are so honored to have been here for the Reid family over the years. Over time, Ken and Linda became part of the Foss family. What was it about Foss that stood out? Foss was here for their family at all levels of care. Ken and Linda agree it is the compassionate staff and the ‘family feel’ of Foss, always caring and welcoming, that supported their ongoing relationship with this unique place.

When visiting Foss, what you will see is devoted staff striving to care for each and every resident as if they were their own family. There might be someone from the maintenance crew repairing a light, a housekeeper cleaning a resident’s room, kitchen staff delivering meals or caregivers attending to the needs of our residents. What you don’t see are the extensive federal and state regulatory guidelines that Foss is required to follow. These regulations are in place to promote quality of life and support the physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being of each resident. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) developed a star rating system that gives each organization a rating between 1 and 5 stars. The nursing home star rating categories are: Health Inspections, Staffing, Quality of Resident Care Measures and an Overall Rating. CMS calculates a star rating for each of these 3 categories, along with the overall rating.

Nursing homes with 5 stars are considered to be much above average quality and only 15% of nursing homes, nationwide, achieve this rating.I am very pleased to announce that Foss has achieved a 5 star overall rating from CMS. This was accomplished by our focus on interdisciplinary teamwork, attention to clinical excellence and commitment to quality of care. While this rating is a reflection of our quality, it is the day to day loving and compassionate care that is the heart of our quality.
